ARTIST STATEMENT: For my “alter ego” I decided to focus on the earth-friendly side of myself. I make an effort to use a water bottle and lunchbox and recycle, but mainly solely when it is convenient for me. I thought it would be interesting to feature myself as being more outdoors-y looking considering I generally place a great deal of effort in my appearance. I threw my naturally frizzy hair up in a nasty bun and grabbed an old flannel shirt, some gym shorts, and my running shoes in an effort to capture fashion carelessness. I decided to take a picture of myself while “recycling” and used a ladder and my self timer to set up the shot. I took a few close up shots before realizing that I was not getting the effect I wanted. I decided to take one a littler father away, which lead to the dual emphasis on myself and the forest in the photo. Post production, I realized that the lighting was a bit harsher than I would like it, so I used a combination of filters and layers to add a bit of a sepia tint to it. I feel like the tint makes the photo seem a bit more in tune with nature.
My daughter wanted her own Alter-Ego photo done so I decided to hook her one up!
It allowed me to push myself and also do one outside to see exactly how long it would take me to put a full shot together..
My alter ego self portrait shows the darker, less innocent side of me. With people I don’t know, I am usually pretty quiet.
In this photo, I am holding a butcher knife. From as long as I can remember, I have been interested in serial killers and cannibals, as well as other dark, gruesome things. The blood around my lips also goes along with the dark, gruesome theme. I took this photo in a completely pitch black room and only used one household flash light as a source of light. I think that this was extremely effective in this photo. There are a numerous amount of aspects I incorporated to make this picture scary. Only half of my face is visible. Also, the light begins to get dark right after it is past my iris. This made the photo look even better. In Photoshop, I also added a slight orange cast to the photo. There are shadows around the bottom and top right corners. My smile also looks pretty creepy.
With this photo, my purpose was to create a dark, eerie, scary photo. I believe that I successfully did this. From the butcher knife, to my face only being partially visible, I think that this photo will evoke fear and a sense of uneasiness in almost anyone.

lola fancies fuscia hair (tossled a bit from dancing with wild abandon), 80s concert tees and vintage leopard (and doesn’t care one bit that she’s way too old for these things). she sips champagne from a straw. her laugh is recognizable from across a crowded room. she relishes risk-taking and is eager to help others plunge rollercoaster-smile-first into the ocean of life.
in true lola fashion, she insisted on being the first of the alter-egos.
lola is fearless.
