Sister Rosetta Tharpe is credited with bringing gospel music to the mainstream in the 1930s and 40s.
…
On December 23, 1938, Tharpe performed at Carnegie Hall in John Hammond's Spirituals to Swing concert. Her performance was revolutionary and shocking because it involved a woman playing a guitar.
...
Merging the religious and secular worlds, she later went on to play regularly with Cab Calloway at the Cotton Club. Tharpe became a crossover artist: during WWII, she recorded a "V-Disc" for troops overseas.
….
Hailed as "The Godmother of Rock and Roll," Tharpe's life was detailed in an episode of American Masters on PBS. During the 1940s-60s, Tharpe introduced the spiritual passion of her gospel music into the secular world of rock ’n’ roll, inspiring some of its greatest stars, including Chuck Berry, Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Little Richard.
...
Her flamboyance, skill, and showmanship on the electric guitar contributed to the conception of Rock & Roll as a genre of music.

Albany Stands is a student-led organization comprised of a diverse group of teens working to elevate marginalized voices through various actions including presentations, workshops, forums, and rallies. It formed after a racist and misogynistic Instagram account arose created and endorsed by students from Albany High School. Going forward with the grant, Albany Stands will continue to provide educational opportunities to students at Albany High in addition to branching out to include the greater community through the production of videos covering topics including allyship and privilege. We hope that education on these topics will create a baseline understanding about systemic oppression and the ways we can combat it.

How are artists, writers, and activists mobilizing and participating in the struggle for human rights and gender justice around the world? What are the regional and global ramifications of this feminist revolution? How have the words “Women, Life, Freedom” helped define a movement and inspire action and allyship? To answer these questions, and discuss the very real risks artists take when addressing them in their work, writer, filmmaker, and human rights activist Amir Soltani will moderate a conversation with Afghani women’s rights activist Crystal Bayat, award-winning visual artist Tala Madani, Iranian poet-in-exile Nesar Mohammadi, and multimedia artist and member of the Art/Culture/Action collective Nazanin Noroozi. The program will be co-presented by The Skirball Cultural Center, and will be followed by a reception. The Cultural Partner for this program is The Farhang Foundation.
Farhang Foundation is a member-supported nonreligious, nonpolitical and nonprofit foundation established in 2008 to celebrate and promote Iranian art and culture for the benefit of the community-at-large. The foundation supports a broad range of academic and cultural activities by funding academic programs, diverse cultural programs such as the celebrations of Nowruz, as well as musical performances, art exhibitions, film screenings and festivals.
This event was co-presented with The Skirball, and presented in collaboration with the Artists at Risk Connection (ARC) and made possible thanks to the generous support of the Andy Warhol Foundation for Visual Arts.
The Cultural Partner for this program was The Farhang Foundation.

I keep rewatching the videos of people in the streets and am so very confused by all of the non-BLACKS initiating the looting and provoking violence. I keep watching the videos of Police going out of their way to incite those peacefully protesting. -

If you are on the frontlines, protect yourself at all cost. If you are a creator, keep curating. Distance yourself and/or stop Whites and POC that are taking advantage of the chaos in order to hide their agenda under the guise of allyship.
•
I’m so exhausted of people using their resources to undermine what is happening and the thoughts/ideas prevailing. You are not an ally without asking questions and seeking how you can be of aide- if you are moving on your own agenda, you are a threat to the movement.

I’m so exhausted of people using their resources to undermine what is happening and the thoughts/ideas prevailing. You are not an ally without asking questions and seeking how you can be of aide- if you are moving on your own agenda, you are a threat to the movement.
