Kumam Davidson

Founder-President, Matai Society

Kumam Davidson has a decade of experience in transformative queer activism and LGBTQIA advocacy, championing indigenous livelihoods, psycho-social health, and trauma-informed interventions in conflict zones. He is an expert in digital storytelling and community building across Northeast India and Delhi. He has collaborated with global institutions like the University of Sussex, University of California as well as grassroot communities on community led research into HIV, mental health, and LGBTQIA lives.

Davidson’s key achievements include founding Matai Society, a grassroots organization in Manipur, and creating The Chinky Homo Project, a digital queer anthology for Northeast India. Additionally, he has published ethnographic, research, and creative works on LGBTQIA lives, mental health, and queerness. He has also curated numerous community storytelling events across Northeast India, amplifying marginalized voices and fostering deeper understanding.

Coming from an experience of working with women, queer, trans folks in an armed conflict setting and marginalised communities, I am interested in engaging with the ideas of marginality, solidarity and allyship with reference to the works of Matai Society.

Marginality informs the work Matai does; economically, socially, politically, geographically and that marginality being further complicated by a never-ending armed conflict, decades of political instabilities, human rights violations and a largely undocumented people’s response to it.

The works of Matai has been founded on queer trans and women leadership in a militarized, patriarchal ethnically volatile society. This leadership is a paradigm shift for us. Furthermore, the solidarities and allyship both within and outside the state have grown and those are stories to be highlighted in the session (The Collective Trust-Matai [ Mental health works], Mahei-iHEAR [mental health informed Livelihood work], Teepoi-Matai (an attempt), Snehadhara Foundation - Matai; a Fellowship).

Most of these conversations, processes happen in networks, circles and spaces whose accessibility and participation maybe limited. We believe in making this more inclusive by passing on the mike, opening up the spaces to "locals" and "migrants" alike, "artists" and "activists", "funders" and "grassroot communities". We advocate for cross-intersectional participation.

How are artists, writers, and activists mobilizing and participating in the struggle for human rights and gender justice around the world? What are the regional and global ramifications of this feminist revolution? How have the words “Women, Life, Freedom” helped define a movement and inspire action and allyship? To answer these questions, and discuss the very real risks artists take when addressing them in their work, writer, filmmaker, and human rights activist Amir Soltani will moderate a conversation with Afghani women’s rights activist Crystal Bayat, award-winning visual artist Tala Madani, Iranian poet-in-exile Nesar Mohammadi, and multimedia artist and member of the Art/Culture/Action collective Nazanin Noroozi. The program will be co-presented by The Skirball Cultural Center, and will be followed by a reception. The Cultural Partner for this program is The Farhang Foundation.

Farhang Foundation is a member-supported nonreligious, nonpolitical and nonprofit foundation established in 2008 to celebrate and promote Iranian art and culture for the benefit of the community-at-large. The foundation supports a broad range of academic and cultural activities by funding academic programs, diverse cultural programs such as the celebrations of Nowruz, as well as musical performances, art exhibitions, film screenings and festivals.

This event was co-presented with The Skirball, and presented in collaboration with the Artists at Risk Connection (ARC) and made possible thanks to the generous support of the Andy Warhol Foundation for Visual Arts.

The Project is a perfect example of thunbergism aka peak woke performative allyship activism for FOMO gen-z types. And a front for the Australian Trump Republican party aka the LNP. Remember Greta thunberg is now an endorsed promoter of the WEF's agenda's.

Women Deliver 2023 - Side Event -

We No Go Gree: Women’s Movement-Allyship, Solidarity and Convening: In March 2022, five Gender-Related Bills reached a historic climax in Nigeria's National Constitution Review. In response to the Bills being thrown out, over 200 women’s groups marched on the National Assembly and said, “We No Go Gree’, Pidgin” for “We disagree!”. The Council of Traditional and Religious Leaders of Africa (COTLA) have also boldly said ‘We No Gree’ and championed abolishment of harmful practices including money-wife and female genital mutilation (FGM). This event will look at what it takes to effectively push back against the push-back and features a fast-paced hackathon for lesson sharing and connection-building to prevent and respond to sexual and gender-based violence.

As the global champion for women and girls, UN women will strongly collaborate with Women Deliver 2023 Global Conference, bringing together civil society and women’s rights activists; along with the next generations of changemakers, including youth and visionaries who were instrumental in building and driving the momentum of Generation Equality.

In 2023, Women Deliver Conference is taking place coinciding with the Midpoint Moment of Generation Equality – which will be held in September 2024 in New York. Convened by UN Women, the Generation Equality Forum (GEF) is an unprecedented global effort to accelerate investment and implementation on gender equality in today's context of stalled progress and regression. By bringing together diverse stakeholders from every part of society, Generation Equality aims to disrupt inaction, drive political will and accountability, and ensure that the bold ambitions of the 1995 Beijing Platform for Action on women’s rights are finally implemented, and the Sustainable Development Goals are achieved, leaving no one behind.

Despite some progress, real change has been slow. Multiple obstacles remain unchanged in law and in culture. As a result, women continue to be discriminated against, their contributions are undervalued, they continue to work more, earn less, have fewer choices, and experience multiple forms of violence at home and in public spaces.

The Women Deliver 2023 Global Conference will also be the scenario for UN Women and UNDP to launch the experimental twin indices: Global Gender Parity Index (GGPI) and the Women’s Empowerment Index (WEI) which provide a multidimensional measurement framework to guide national and international policy action, research and advocacy to diagnose the root causes of structural gender inequality, identify game-changers and spur further commitments. The WEI measures women’s power and freedoms to make choices and seize opportunities in life. The GGPI evaluates the status of women relative to men and exposes some of the remaining gaps in achieving parity between women and men.
