Mark Taylor was such a masterful opening batsman, slip fielder and captain for Australia that he was looked upon as an allrounder. A heavily built left-hander who played classically late, Taylor made 839 Test runs on his first England tour (1989) and for most of his 104 Tests remained reassuringly solid. He was equally dependable at first slip, where he cradled most of his world-record 157 catches. After he inherited the captaincy from Allan Border in 1994-95 he began with a pair, but soon added such acute tactical vibrancy that the following year Australia toppled West Indies in the Caribbean to become unofficial world champions. Taylor's leadership and diplomacy marked him out as one of Australia's greatest captains, and saved his place during an 18-month batting slump that ended with a memorable century at Edgbaston in 1997. The following year he made an unbeaten 334 at Peshawar to match Don Bradman's highest score for Australia, then declared. Six months later, still only 34, but with the Ashes again safe and his timing as sound as ever, he retired to the commentary box.

Cricket captain refuses to pass record set by Bradman

By Tim Reid

Mark Taylor appeals for lbw on Pakistani batsman Ijaz AhmedMARK Taylor, the Australian cricket captain, made perhaps the most selfless decision in Test match history yesterday when he spurned the chance to beat Sir Donald Bradman's batting record for the highest individual score by an Australian.

Taylor hit an unbeaten 334 against Pakistan in the second Test in Peshawar to match Bradman's 334 made against England at Headingley, Leeds, in 1930, but magnanimously declared Australia's innings closed before the resumption of the third day's play yesterday.

He also gave up his chance of beating West Indian Brian Lara's world record of 375. Taylor indicated yesterday that he wished to remain side by side in the record books with Bradman, regarded by many as the world's greatest ever batsman, who retired in 1948 with a peerless Test average of 99.94.

The Australian team held a vote on Friday night and decided that Taylor should bat on. He ignored it, timing the declaration to give the Australians the best opportunity of bowling out Pakistan twice, thus securing a series victory. Australia won the first Test of the three-match series. Taylor said: "I have equalled Sir Donald Bradman's record and that is more than satisfying for me. The [Brian Lara] record doesn't mean anything. I'd prefer to win this game, that's what I'm here for."

The wonderful innings, and a declaration of 599 for four which put the team cause ahead of his own record hopes, brought tributes from around the world, most notably from Sir Donald himself, who has made few public comments since his retirement.

Sir Donald, 90, released a statement through a spokesman, saying: "I want to congratulate Mark Taylor on his achievement. I wish him the very best of luck." Sir Donald had been unable to watch Taylor's innings from his Adelaide home because he was feeling ill, but was full of admiration for the performance.

Australian newspapers, television and radio were dominated by Taylor's innings, and the public was consumed with speculation on whether he declare.

The Australian coach, Geoff Marsh, said that Taylor, known by team mates as Tubby, had made a great sacrifice for the team. "A lot of the guys wanted him to bat on but Tubby put the team before his own record," Marsh said.

Only 16 months ago former Australian cricket greats, such as the fast bowler Dennis Lillee and former captains Greg and Ian Chappell, were telling Taylor that his career was over and that he should retire. He had gone for 20 consecutive innings without a half century and was in the worst slump of any Australian captain in history. But the team remained successful, his players backed him, and his form slowly returned, beginning with a century during the first Test at Headingley against England in 1996.

My preferred exhaust for the CR 125 HPP engine. Best allrounder ! Much more punch in the mid, more top-end as well.

Monroe Salisbury (1876-1935) was an American stage and screen actor, who peaked on screen in the late 1910s and early 1920s, often in Westerns.

Monroe Salisbury was born in Angola, New York, as Orange (Orr) Salisbury Cash, the son of David Cash and Ellen Louise Salisbury Cash. By 1900, he was working as an actor, supporting his widowed mother and living in Providence, Rhode Island. He performed on Broadway between 1903 and 1906, with such actors as George Arliss and Minnie Maddern Fiske, e.g. in Becky Sharp (1904). By 1914, he left New York for Hollywood to work in films, in his first years often with director Cecil B. DeMille, all made for the Jesse Lasky Feature Play Company. His first film in California was indeed DeMille's The Squaw Man (1914), followed by the DeMille films Brewster's Millions (1914), The Master Mind (1914), The Virginian (1914), The Man from Home (1914), Rose of the Rancho (1914), and After Five (1915). He did also several films with other directors at Lasky's. Salisbury became well-known, playing opposite such actors as Douglas Fairbanks Sr. (e.g. The Lamb, 1915; Double Trouble, 1915), eventually becoming a movie idol. He was six feet tall and ruggedly handsome, making him a great choice for western films. His most famous part was that of Alessandro in Ramona (Donald Crisp, 1916), with Adda Gleason in the title role, as a Southern Californian 'Senorita', who elopes with an Indian of noble descent but encounters mishap and tragedy. Crisp directed Salisbury again in The Eyes of the World (1917) and The Cook of Canyon Camp (1917).

In 1917, Salisbury moved over to Universal, and became one of its biggest stars. Director Rupert Julian gave him the male leads opposite Ruth Clifford in several films : The Desire of the Moth (1917), The Door Between (1917), The Savage (1917), Hands Down (1918), Hungry Eyes (1918), The Millionaire Pirate (1919), and The Sleeping Lion (1919), while afterward at Universal, Salisbury continued, often with Clifford, now directed by others such as Elmer Clifton, Rollin Sturgeon. and others. Thanks to his success as Universal star in the late teens, Salisbury could buy then a 40-acre (160,000 m2) citrus ranch near Hemet. Between pictures, it was his habit to drive out and drop in unexpectedly on the Native American overseer and his family who lived on the place and worked in the groves.

Genrewise, at Universal, Salisbury was an allrounder both in dramas and action movies, though he very often did western dramas, such as The Barbarian (1921) for which he was reunited with Donald Crisp as director. In 1922 Salisbury did his last film at Universal, Great Alone, by James Colwell and Jacques Jaccard. It would also be the last film in which he was the star. By the late 1920s, the aging actor was less in demand and he struggled to find parts. In 1929 and 1930 he did his last (by now supporting) parts in two sound films, after which he disappeared from the Hollywood scene. In 1935, Salisbury went to Patton State Hospital for the Insane in San Bernardino, his name unknown, his occupation a hotel clerk. On August 6th he fell, hitting his head and fracturing his skull. He lay in the morgue for two days before his sister Adelaide identified him. His cremated remains were buried in the same grave with his mother, Ellen, who died in 1929, in the Rosedale Cemetery, Los Angeles, California.

Nice Metric Today

I officially go back to work next Tuesday; so, I'm planning my actions these last few days of freedom.

After my SMART Board training class yesterday, I stopped at Country Cobbler. My tennis shoes looked dirty even though they are VERY comfortable. After trying several pairs of shoes, I decided on "All Rounders" by Mephisto (my favorite brand) that had just arrived at the shoe store that day. I can wear them without the inserts in the shoe.

Today I went to see Floyd for a shaping of my hair. It's been cut too short; so, we're waiting for it to grow.

Then I went to U.S. Nails for a pedicure and manicure. I had hoped that my corn would be removed, but I had to work on that when I returned home.

Last I went to Sam's Club to spend the $100 that the governor gave all teachers. Of course, my items cost another $100 which came "out of my pocket."

It rained again today; so, I hurried back home to avoid being drenched. At home I searched through an Oriental Trading catalog for items to purchase for my Treasure Box in my classroom. I'll also be purchasing some toys, etc. for the kids at Children's Church.

I'm not finished with all my preparations, but I'm pleased with the things that I did accomplish.

A thrusting Jamaican left-hander, Gayle earned himself a black mark on his first senior tour - to England in 2000 - where the new boys were felt to be insufficiently respectful of their elders. But a lack of respect, for opposition bowlers at least, has served Gayle well since then. Tall and imposing at the crease, he loves to carve through the covers off either foot, and has the ability to decimate the figures of even the thriftiest of opening bowlers. In a lean era for West Indian cricket - and fast bowling in particular - Gayle's pugnacious approach has become an attacking weapon in its own right. His 79-ball century at Cape Town in January 2004, on the back of a South African first innings of 532, was typical of his no-holds-barred approach. However, Gayle's good run ended when England came calling early in 2004, and he averaged 26 against their potent pace attack - Steve Harmison, in particular, fancied his chances against Gayle, dismissing him four times in seven innings, as a lack of positive footwork was exposed. But men with little footwork often baffle experts, and after returning to form with an uncharacteristic century against Bangladesh, he exacted his revenge on England's bowlers with a battering not seen since Lara's 400, before coming within a whisker of emulating Lara himself, with a career-best 317 against South Africa in Antigua. In the disastrous 2005-06 tour of New Zealand he led the batting in the three-Test series, piling 235 runs - no other West Indian touched the 200-run mark. He also bowls brisk non-turning offspin, with which he has turned himself into a genuine one-day allrounder. Maturing quickly, he has become a consistently prolific scorer in the ODIs. He averaged over 40 in the 2006-07 season with three hundreds - an unbeaten 133 against South Africa in the Champions Trophy being the highlight, and three fifties. But expected to be one of the stars of the World Cup in the Caribbean, his batting was a major disappointment. In the absence of the injured Ramnaresh Sarwan for their tour in 2007, Gayle was handed the captaincy for the limited-overs series in England and Ireland and found immediate success by beating England 2-1. He also led in the Test series against South Africa, leaving with a 1-1 result, and was retained as captain ahead of Sarwan for the home Tests against Sri Lanka in 2008. Gayle's $800,000 IPL price-tag made him one of Kolkata's most expensive players and he was initially reluctant to commit to the Test series against Australia when the schedules clashed. However, a groin injury meant he was unable to play any IPL matches anyway. After losing the home Test and ODI series against Australia, he quit the captaincy, only to change his mind soon after.

This picture was taken in the Peak District in England just outside a Matlock, a small town near Nottingham in 1999. The picture was used by Gabe Konrad as a postcard advertisement for his book Bikelore 2, The World of Wheels.

The fenders (mud guards) were necessary as some of the backroads appeared to be paved entirely in cow manture.

This is actually a scan of the postcard Gabe printed.

Great to see two Scottish riders among the big names of British time trialling. Tour de France rider Ken Laidlaw (Army C.U.) and Ernie V. Mitchell (Glasgow Subs). Ken rode and finished the 1961 Tour de France in 65th place. Jacques Anquetil won the race. He also competed in the road race and time trial in the 1960 Olympic Games held in Rome. He raced in Europe during his professional career between 1961 and 1962. In 1961 he rode for Margnat-Rochet-Dunlop, and in 1962 for Margnat-Paloma.

A message from His Holiness Younus AlGohar regarding Imran Khan's Azadi March:

Nawaz Sharif must go. He is a curse. He is an enemy of the state and he must be punished. We want Imran Khan as Prime Minister of Pakistan; he is an honest man. He is the improved version of Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah. May God help Imran Khan topple up Nawaz Sharif and his illegal regime, amen.

To Imran Khan: Come on! Go free Pakistan from monsters like Nawaz Sharif; it is now or never. This is the only time for freedom. This time will not return. We eagerly await change in Pakistan. Revolution is imminent now!

In an era of fast scoring and high-octane entertainment, Jacques Kallis is a throwback - and an astonishingly effective one at that - to Test cricket's more sedate age, when one's wicket was a commodity to be guarded with one's life, and runs were but an accidental by-product of crease occupation.

After a distinctly ordinary start to his Test career, Kallis blossomed into arguably the world's leading batsman, with a defensive technique second-to-none, and the adhesive qualities of a Cape Point limpet. Generally a placid and undemonstrative man, he nailed down the crucial No. 3 position in the South African batting order after a number of players had been tried and discarded, and his stock rose exponentially from that moment. In 2005, he was honoured as the ICC's Test and overall Player of the Year, after a run of performances against West Indies and England that marked him out as the biggest scalp in the modern game.

His batting is not for the romantic - a Kallis century tends to be a soulless affair, with ruthless efficiency taking precedence over derring-do, and he has never quite dispelled the notion that he is a selfish cricketer, with more interest in his average than his team's position. But whatever it is that makes him tick, it has propelled him to the top of the all-time South African Test batting charts, and until the emergence of Andrew Flintoff, he was by some distance the leading allrounder in the world game, capable of swinging the ball sharply at surprising pace off a relaxed run-up. He is a strong man with powerful shoulders and a deep chest and he has the capacity to play a wide array of attacking strokes, if not always the inclination. To add to all this, he is a fine slip fielder.

Missed the first Test of South Africa's tour of Australia at the end of 2005 with an elbow problem, struggled facing Brett Lee at Melbourne and was hampered by the injury in making a patient and crucial 111 in the first innings at Sydney. Added a slow, unbeaten half-century in the second innings as South Africa contemplated their declaration and ended with an average of 61.33. Stood in as captain for the gut-wrenching third Test in a return series at home recently, and was the lead South African batsman in a bowler-dominated contest. A fighting 114 out of a total of 267 at Durban highlighted his series return of 227 runs and seven wickets. With Graeme Smith ruled out for 12 weeks with an ankle injury, Kallis was named captain for three ODIs and a Twenty20 against Zimbabwe at home ahead of the Champions Trophy in October.

Against India at home at the end of the 2006, Kallis topped the ODI run tally on either side with 168 at 84, including an unbeaten hundred, but managed only one fifty in the Test series. Against Pakistan just after that, Kallis continued to amaze with his all-round feats. He was the leading run-scorer of the series and his bowling was vital in a weaker attack at Newlands. In the ODIs, he hit two crucial half-centuries and topped the averages. At the 2007 World Cup, Kallis was South Africa's highest run-scorer with 485, but drew further criticism for his sluggish approach at the crease. Failed in the semi-final against eventual winners Australia. Kallis was not included in the South African side for the Twenty20 World Championship at home in September.

It was, however, no surprise to see him live up to his reputation after being recalled to the side for short tour of Pakistan towards the end of 2007. After back-to-back Man-of-the-match titles there really was only one contender for Man of the Series, and Kallis continued his excellent form with hundreds and wickets in series against New Zealand and West Indies at home. Kallis's continued run of prolific scores helped him displace Mohammad Yousuf from the second position in the rankings for Test batsmen, and Kallis also extended his lead in the rankings for Test allrounders, where he moved in first place ahead of Andrew Flintoff.

A dip in form plagued him through 2008, but South Africa saw a glimmer of his consistent self when he reached his twin milestones of 10,000 runs - first in ODIs on the tour of Australia, then in Tests in the first match of the return series at the Wanderers.
