Not all sunsets are epic, but sometimes it's worth sticking around to see which cooler tones come out to play afterward.

I'm going to go ahead and repeat what I said about my last photo on Facebook-
I've heard a lot of people say that sunsets are overrated, especially photographs of sunsets. Try as I might, I still can't understand why.
Coming from someone who chased the sun daily for over a year, I still consider myself blessed when I can escape, even for a minute, to watch it disappear on the horizon. Not all sunsets are created equally, but each tell their own story.
Photographs don't always need a planned concept or special effects to be beautiful- sometimes we're just lucky enough to be in the right place at the right time to tell the story that's already there.
You lived another day and will wake up tomorrow with a new beginning. What message could be more beautiful than that?

September Sunset, over willow and sugar-maple trees; White Plains, New York, (9/21/14).
I really liked the sunset along the Santa Rosa Sound last night. It was of the best I've witnessed in a while.

Just to show that it's not all sunsets and sunrises, this was a walk from Grenitote on North Uist, where the wind was so strong it flattened the marram grass and filled the air with sand. Superb, and We all fall down, by I like trains is fine.
My photo may not be realistic, but there is no component of the photo from plastic, just different exposures!
A little hay brown in color, but the gold of all sunsets must come through.
It often pays in photography to walk the extra mile (or even 100 meters in this case). I was on my way back to the hostel when I turned around to have one more look at the beautiful sky and saw this scene in the distance. I was intrigued but having shot so many sunsets and sunrises in the last few days I thought that it would be just another shot with a nice sky in the background. Still, I walked back to find a proper frame and was rewarded with the guy standing on the stairs filming the sunset himself. He added that crucial human element to the scene to tell a story.
The sunset that day was simply spectacular. I wonder if all sunsets in LA are like this since there is so much crap in the air.
It's not all sunsets and roses in the rural decay around here.
You don't have to look far to find run-down houses and destroyed trailers - I'm amazed at how many abandoned homes there are and how much junk like this you see along side the road; all make great subjects, of course, but sometimes I/we (photographers) try to idealize the situation - in fact that's our primary MO - but sometimes it needs to be laid out. That's kind of what I was trying to do here while still creating an interesting image. Maybe it works, maybe not - at least it ain't an HDR sunset...
Slightly desat/vintage processing to it. I debated a vignette and ultimately decided against it. Lightly tone mapped layer included as well for depth. Also went for the 4:5 8x10 crop since it seemed to work with the proportions (the the thumbnail square looks pretty good to me as well)
Not all sunsets are bright orange, red ones. The day had been hot but high cloud rolled in during the afternoon, leading to a cooler, greyer sunset with only a touch of colour. But the exposed sand and low tide at the Colonnades beach made for some muted translucent colours . With the FFM.
This one is the trophy-est ranch of em all. Sunset at the Double RL. This is a re-edit of a shot from last year also appearing on flickr.
Fanta(bulou)Strawberry Dusk Across Tampa Bay Florida Sky At Blessed Home - IMRAN™
Almost all sunsets are magical, and many are incredible. Dusks on Tampa Bay, Florida at my blessed home in Apollo Beach are always spectacular. But sometimes they are more than can be described in words. This is one of them. It looks like Fanta & some Strawberry Festival colors in the sky.
Captured as a panorama stitched from just four iPhone 13 Pro Max photos, it memorializes one fabulous example of the unlimited moments of nature's magnificence which I can never give enough thanks for.

"Eres una huida hacia delante. Sin miedos. Eres mi calma y mis ganas de resistir. Y un paseo en barca por las líneas de tu mano. Eres el misterio de los cuentos de terror. Y ese brote de vida de un día algo hueco. Eres como el primer sorbo del café de la mañana. Y como el beso inesperado. Eres. Eres todo lo sé que nunca podría tener. Eres lo que nunca querría querer. Y por eso, lo que quiero."
"You are an escape moving forward. Without fears. You are my calm and my will to resist. And a boat trip within the lines drawn in your hands. You are the mystery from the terror tales. And that life bloom from a little empty day. You are like the first coffee sip in the morning. And like the unexpected kiss. You are. You are all I know I ever could have. You are what I never wanted to want. And that’s why, you are what I want."

Not all sunsets have to be bathed in colour. I liked the contrast of this image receding into the distant hills.

This sunset was shot from our tent at Maramboi Tented Lodge at the shore of Lake Manyara, northern Tanzania, near the foot of the Western Rift Valley Wall of the African Great Rift. On the other side of the mountain are the Ngorongoro Highlands and crater and the Serengeti Plains. c.2019 John M. Hudson | jmhudson1.com
