Inserida num plano de rega implementado em Beja, esta barragem foi construída na bacia do rio Sado para apoio nas actividades agrícolas da região. Aliado a isto, fornece refúgio e alimento a várias espécies migradoras que fogem das regiões frias onde o Inverno é mais rigoroso, dando a este local um grande valor ornitológico.
Oferecemos-lhe a oportunidade de observar grandes bandos de Grous (Grus grus), Flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus), Colhereiros (Platalea leucorodia) entre outras espécies.
Set in a watering schedule implemented in Beja, this dam was built in the Sado river basin to support agricultural
activities in the region. In addition, it provides shelter and food to many migratory species fleeing the cold regions
where winter is more stringent, giving this place a great ornithological value.
We give you the opportunity to observe large flocks of Cranes (Grus grus), Greater Flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) and Spoonbills (Platalea leucorodia) among others.

The municipality is composed of 18 parishes, and is the capital of the Beja District. The present Mayor is Francisco Santos, elected by the Unitarian Democratic Coalition. The municipal holiday is Ascension Day. The Portuguese Air Force has an airbase in the area - the Air Base No. 11.
