Golden Monoliths

Imagined for lille3000’s 7th edition, the Golden Monoliths by Spanish artist SpY guide the visitors and participants of the parade to the heart of the city and its Fiesta. The gold titans seem like a modern take on the 17th century city gates, that welcomed the opening of carnivals and processions. They transform the urban landscape of Lille through the installation of fourteen golden shipping containers in a vertical position, aligned along its main street.
This monumental intervention reconfigures the everyday perception of the public environment, turning industrial objects into symbols that alter our understanding of space.
The street ceases to be a simple space of transit and becomes a ritual corridor, a passageway between
Originally conceived as utilitarian structures for global transportation and trade, the containers are decontextualized and coated in gold. Far from being a decorative gesture, this treatment converts their industrial purpose into an artistic resignification that oscillates between the functional and the symbolic.
SpY subverts the original identity of the containers through an installation that transforms the utilitarian into the mythological, in an exercise in spatial perception that invites reflection on the cult of consumption in modern society.

À l’image des portes de ville du 17ème siècle qui accueillaient l’ouverture des carnavals et des processions, les Golden Monoliths de l’artiste espagnol SpY guident le public et les participants à la parade au cœur de la ville et de sa Fiesta. Ils transforment le paysage urbain de Lille avec quatorze conteneurs dorés érigés à la verticale le long de la rue Faidherbe.
Cette intervention monumentale reconfigure notre vision quotidienne de la ville, transforme des objets industriels en symboles qui modifient notre perception de l’espace.
À l’origine conçues comme des structures utilitaires pour le transport et le commerce global, les conteneurs sont décontextualisés et peints en or. Loin d’être un geste décoratif, cette métamorphose vient bouleverser leur essence industrielle et leur confère un sens artistique entre fonction et symbole, utilité et mythologie.

A bit of current at Roma that day. The downside being that framing a shot was a constant fight against it and the tank lasted 45 minutes but hey... look at all that nicely aligned fish 😉.
That doesn't happen without current. Sometimes, you just have to work for it.
The yellow Angelfish adds a nice touch of colour to this arrangement.

The 9/11 Tribute in Lights came on while we were traveling down the Hudson River. I was lucky to catch the lights aligned to the moon in my previous post.
Luck struck again as we got closer to Lower Manhattan, Fireworks started going off in front of us.

Le congiunzioni fra corpi del sistema solare sono spesso spettacolari. Corpi rocciosi o gassosi, in delicato equilibrio di forze ed illuminati dalla stessa stella, offrono spettacoli memorabili.
Eppure il motivo per cui si verificano è estremamente semplice e riflette l'origine del nostro sistema solare: tutti i pianeti orbitano nei pressi di un piano comune, chiamato Eclittica. Questo perchè in ere antichissime, la nube di materiale che ha formato i pianeti si appiattì in un disco sottile, all'interno del quale poi sono nati i singoli pianeti. E questi ancora oggi si muovono lungo le traiettorie che acquisirono al tempo, oltre 5 miliardi di anni fa.
Quindi oggi, quando vediamo delle congiunzioni, possiamo ricordarci delle nostre origini. E la Luna? La Luna non è un pianeta, ma un satellite e quindi non percorre un'orbita perfettamente allineata con gli altri. Se così fosse, vedremmo un'eclissi di sole ogni mese! :)

FR : Pyramide du Louvre / Paris (75)
La photo “poncif” à contre-jour que tous les touristes visitant Paris produisent des centaines de fois par jour, et que je n'avais jamais osé commettre depuis la construction de la pyramide en 1988, alors que les occasions n'ont pas manquées en 35 ans !
Nul n'est prophète en son pays...
Voilà qui est corrigé… Il était temps !
J'ai quand même profité du meilleur éclairage (soleil dans l’axe de l’arche pour la bonne symétrie architecturale) et attendu que passent quelques personnages atypiques, pour garantir un minimum d’originalité à la scène de rue : Une dame avec un étrange champignon sur la tête (sans doute la ministre des spores !) et un porteur d'eau en livraison express figé dans sa course (d’où l’expression “avoir l’eau courante à tous les étages”)
Et, en plus, retour aux sources (volontaire) avec un 50mm fixe, ce qui me rappelle mes débuts balbutiants photographiques, il y a très très longtemps…
Époque où mon budget d’étudiant m’interdisait de me payer autre chose qu’un objectif standard, mais aussi époque que je ne regrette pas, car j’étais jeune, et “ramer” avec un seul 50 mm au bout du boîtier, est sans doute une des meilleures manières d’apprendre par cœur la technique photo et de se concentrer soigneusement sur la composition…
Et ça ne s’oublie plus !
Tout cela s’est passé, on l’imagine, plusieurs décennies avant la naissance de la pyramide du Louvre !

The classical photo toward the light that all tourists visiting Paris produce hundreds of times a day, and that I had never dared to commit since the construction of the pyramid in 1988, while opportunities have not missed in 35 years of Parisian life!

However, I tried to take advantage of the best lighting (sun in the axis of the arch for the good architectural symmetry) then waiting for some atypical characters, to guarantee a minimum of originality to the street scene: A lady with a strange atomic mushroom on her head, and a water carrier in express delivery...

A shot from earlier in the month, trying to shoot the planetary alignment! It is here somewhere, Mara is off to the top right, but I’ve messed with the colours so can’t see its telltale red hue!
