I heard a weird sound in the backyard so I went out there and found a beam of light depositing this strange creature onto the fence. It was scanning the backyard with a strange light coming from its eyes. Then suddenly the craft came back and beamed the creature back up.

View Large On Black - Well... It certainly looked like an alien the first time I saw one last week! It's called an "Ambush Bug" and it's not even a half inch long.

From a couple sources on the web...

These stealthy critters sit very still on or near flowers, their superb camouflage allowing them to remain undetected while an unwitting butterfly or other unfortunate happens by to gather nectar. They then seize their prey using front legs adapted for the task - these legs resemble the front legs of the praying mantis. It is a ferocious bug indeed that takes prey 10 times its own size.

The mouth of this bug as with the assassin bug (a close cousin) is shaped like a spike that is plunged into the body of the prey it catches. The "proboscis" is used to jab the victim. The saliva then dissolves the insides of the insect it has caught. Once it is turned to liquid, this is sucked from the insect much like we might use a straw. The bug's saliva is able to paralyze the food prey so the ambush bug can feed without having to hold tightly to its dinner.

You can see the left leg of the Ambush Bug holding the head of its victim while it inserts it's proboscis to extract the dissolved, insect milk shake! Yummmmm....

The night before this image was taken we took this little beauty inside and photographed it with my bud's MP-E 65 and strobes, with the camera on a tripod. After our little "Studio Session" we put the bug and the flower she was sitting on back in the same spot. I checked on her several times over the next 24 hours and she hadn't moved 4 inches. On one of those occasions she had caught, and was feeding on this fly.

Very cool to find these tiny little dramas playing out under our feet!

Believe it or not you're looking at a potato, we had a few of them in a basket and forgot all about them, we wanted to use them today and were shocked to see these "aliens" of them.

This is the Alien sidekick of the Alien in the other picture. Beware. Not only the bones from the pelvic girdle.. but also the cartilage that goes from the sternum to the ribs.... oooooooh..

So I have lots of time at school... or not really but I'm quite creative during the breaks..

This is a costume I built on commission for a friend. I call it the "Alien Diplomat", the idea being that this is a representative from another world here to visit our leaders.

The remains of a Japanese windflower looked for all the world like an alien insect flying in!

the alien movies are now available on blu-ray. predators not included.

I do miss my skateboarding days.

These are old images taken probably in 2009 when I still have my old Fujifilm camera.
