Despite losing their license years ago due to malpractice, this family of alchemists continues to conduct business under the table, with orders up to their eyeballs.
Their most recent endeavor is to create the magus opus, colloquially known as the philosopher’s stone. Although there have been several failed attempts their hopes are still high

I love the way these pitch black spaces are brought to life and look so colourful and vibrant in these photos. The reality is a black, still space with the sound of water dripping somewhere off in the darkness (as this remarkably dull video clip I shot illustrates...

my version of a Northumbrian classic landscape. To add a bit of drama I decided on a tri-tone rather than b/w.
This final set of four shots from the series at Greens Beach in northern Tasmania is easily the most Metaphysical work I have done. If you want to understand the mood I was in when I took them, you can read the description under my photograph, "Man with Beanie".
Since then I have consciously allowed my unconscious to shape the way I have edited the shots. Some you have already picked up on that. For me the meaning of these photographs is in their titles. But they are just clues for you to build on.
Meaning in any art comes from the interplay of our social context or surface reality (Habermas' life-world) and our subconscious mythic or deeper reality (Jung saw this as our dream-world). Which is the best path to truth? Which can we trust?
Alchemists sought through their "metaphysical science" not to turn base metals into gold quite literally, but searched for the "philosopher's stone" (no, not the Harry Potter version!). They wanted the elixir of life. They wanted a return to the "Tree of Life".
In the Jewish mystical tradition this is called The Kabbalah. In the ancient Greek traditions this was called Gnosis.
* "gnosis" means true knowledge that comes from the depths of our true inner self.
#MacroMondays #measurement
For this week's theme I brought in some of the smallest measuring cylinders and flasks we have in our lab in the University. We use the cylinders to measure various solutions for the experiments/protocols we need them for so it has to be scientifically exact.
I made up some colourful liquids (the yellow one is orange juice...) and placed the glassware onto a baking tray filled with water for some reflections. A torch lit up the liquids from the side. I am not entirely satisfied with the result - first I had to crop the image quite a bit to fit the guidelines which messed up my composition and secondly I tried for about 20 times to create some smoke from candles that I extinguished next to my setup. Unfortunately, the smoke never really showed up very well on any of my photos so I have to bring in some dry ice next time....
HMM everyone!!
Abstract of traffic-lights in bokeh and reflected onto part of the frontage of The Alchemist bar, Bevis Marks, London.
I created this image from two of the photos I took. I preferred the bokeh in one of the photos and the focal point of the other.

So today I had to stick close to home because the landlords were coming to fix something in the house.
Being stuck inside I figured it would be a good time to clean out the fridge, turned out the eggs were about to pass their best before date and I had a couple bananas from a neighbour who emptied their fridge into mine before snowbirding somewhere warm for a couple months... so what choice did I have?
It was banana bread time; just a half batch today because I normally prefer to at least double the amount of bananas, but this will do for a quick snack!
Oh, if you're interested, the recipe is from the Joy of Baking.
Hope everyone has had a good day.

(Seen in the Historiengewölbe in Rothenburg ob der Tauber; taken at ISO1600, so it's pretty grainy)

A cool project I've been working on with ZIYON for the release of his new solo album.
I made a behind the scenes video for it too! Check it out on my blog...
