One of my favorite flowers for this time of the year. I do not have Hollyhocks in my garden, but I remember them fondly as wildflowers growing in my home country, Isreal :-)
A classic cottage garden staple, hollyhocks (Alcea rosea) bloom mid-summer with numerous flowers on tall spikes. Many of the most common varieties are biennials, meaning they complete their lifecycle over 2 years. The first year is spent growing foliage and storing energy. In the second year, the stalks shoot up, flowers bloom and seeds form. However, there are also many varieties that behave like short-lived perennials and will flower in their first year when planted early enough in spring or started indoors in winter.
Alcea rosea, the common hollyhock, is an ornamental plant in the family Malvaceae. It was imported into Europe from southwestern China during, or possibly before, the 15th century.
Alcea rosea is variously described as a biennial (having a two-year life cycle), as an annual, or as a short-lived perennial. It frequently self-sows, which may create a perception that the plants are perennial. The plant may flower during its first year when sown early. It will grow in a wide range of soils, and can easily reach a height of about 8 feet (2.4 m).
The flowers are a range of colours from white to dark red, including pink, yellow and orange. Different colours prefer different soils. The darker red variety seems to favour sandy soils, while the lighter colour seems to favour clay soils. The plants are easily grown from seed, and readily self-seed.

I noticed this Hollyhock (Alcea rosea) in the vegetable garden of the traditional farmhouse of my photo titled 'A small hamlet'. It was a really nice place!

Alcea is a genus of over 80 species of flowering plants in the mallow family Malvaceae, commonly known as the hollyhocks.[1] They are native to Asia and Europe.[1] The single species of hollyhock from the Americas, the streambank wild hollyhock, belongs to a different genus.

lovely cut-leaf mallows - seen on a walk around the neighbourhood in a natural meadow along a tram (streetcar) line
It was very windy yesterday evening, so I am glad I could 'freeze' the blossoms with a fast shutterspeed
The blossoms and seeds of the cut-leaf mallow are edible - you can colour / decorate salad with them for example :)
Happy Monday and have a pleasant week ahead !!

Holyhock (Alcea rosea)
For my 100 Flowers Project - 2022.
It is with sadness I post these beautiful blooms today. They are in our neighbour's garden. Rick had planted them for Linda where she could see them from their loungeroom window a couple of years ago. Sadly Linda passed away last week after a long and difficult battle with breast cancer. Rick had cared for her at home for the last four years.
Stockrosen gedeihen an Orten, an denen jede andere Pflanze dankend abwinkt 💫🌹
Rose on Stone - Hollyhocks – Alcea rosea – are among my personal favorites in the garden. I admire their ability to establish themselves and thrive in the strangest and harshest places. Hollyhocks thrive in places where every other plant would wave them off. 💖
Thank you for visiting my gallery, commenting, and favorited – I'm glad you like my pictures. 🌺🎶
La Gomera,
im Garten des Informationszentrums im Nationalpark wächst eine Vielzahl von Blumen. Diese Stockmalve oder Stockrose gefiel mir durch ihre Zeichnung in den Blütenblättern sehr gut.
