Hollyhock plants are thought to be originally native to East Asia, where they have roots in ancient Japanese culture. Over the years, they spread across Asia, making their way to the Middle East, where the English first encountered them during the Crusades.
The plants were used to make a salve that was very good for the Crusaders’ horses which were injured on their hind legs, or “hocks.” This is almost definitely where the name comes from – holly, as in holy (as in Holy Land) and hock, as in the part of the horse the plant was used to treat.

the common hollyhock, is an ornamental dicot flowering plant in the family Malvaceae. It was imported into Europe from southwestern China during, or possibly before, the 15th century.William Turner, a herbalist of the time, gave it the name "holyoke" from which the English name derives.

These are a favorite flower from my childhood. I think the City of Vallejo must have planted them along this path - they are not native to California.
That's the Wichels Causeway Drawbridge in the background. It connects Vallejo to Mare Island. I really like that bridge. Here is a nice article about it from the local paper:

Alcea
Alcea, commonly known as hollyhocks, is a genus of about 60 species of flowering plants in the mallow family Malvaceae. They are native to Asia and Europe.
Description
Hollyhocks are annual, biennial, or perennial plants usually taking an erect, unbranched form. The herbage usually has a coating of star-shaped hairs. The leaf blades are often lobed or toothed, and are borne on long petioles. The flowers may be solitary or arranged in fascicles or racemes. The notched petals are usually over 3 centimeters wide and may be pink, white, purple, or yellow. The fruit is a schizocarp, a dry disc divided into over 15 sections that contain seeds.

Over the past 18 months I have posted many images from Hyde Hall and now I’m going to post another series, this time called ‘A day in the Life’. As the title suggests I’m posting what I think are the best of that day. These are just a few taken on 13/07/2016. Hope you like them.

This plant has been imported to Europe already in the 15th century from China.
From then on it became quite popular, also in simple farmer gardens. You can find them in many colors: white, pink, red, purple, yellow, etc.
