HOUSEHOLD CAVALRY FREEDOM OF WINDSOR PARADE, 18 MAY 2019
The Household Cavalry Regiment exercise their Freedom of Entry and paraded through Windsor as they said goodbye to the town they have called home for 215 years. More than 250 soldiers marched through the town to mark their departure before moving to Bulford Camp on Salisbury Plain later in the year. The Welsh Guards will be taking over the barracks afterwards.
The move from Combermere Barracks in Windsor is part of a major restructuring of the British Army. Personnel will be moving to Bulford Camp in Wiltshire as part of a new strike brigade.
The Household Cavalry is comprised of the Blues and Royals and the Life Guards. It has two key roles — armoured reconnaissance and state ceremonial — and soldiers are all trained in both aspects. While the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment is based in London, Windsor is where soldiers have learnt to ride. The 12-week riding course was held at the Household Cavalry training wing in Combermere Barracks, Windsor, which is where they were taught the basics of military equitation and horse welfare.
The march began at Combermere Barracks and proceeded along the Long Walk, Park Street, St Alban’s Street, Castle Hill, High Street, Sheet Street and Kings Road. The parade halted at the Guildhall where the troops gave a Royal Salute to the Princess Royal. Princess Anne then gave an address to the troops from the steps of the Guildhall and later hosted a reception for their families.
An Army spokesman said:
“The Household Cavalry has been in Windsor for more than 200 years. Today they exercised their freedom to parade through this historic city to say thank you and goodbye to a community that has been their home for 215 years. The regiment will move from Combermere Barracks to Bulford in Wiltshire where it will work alongside fellow Royal Armoured Corps Regiment The King’s Royal Hussars to operate the newly developed army reconnaissance vehicle, Ajax.”
From the Court Circular:
“The Princess Royal, Colonel, The Blues and Royals (Royal Horse Guards and 1st Dragoons), this afternoon took the salute at the Household Cavalry's Freedom of the Royal Borough of New Windsor Parade, afterwards attending a Reception at the Guildhall, High Street, Windsor, and was received by General Sir Redmond Watt (Deputy Lieutenant of the Royal County of Berkshire).”
