The sculpture Grapes (2017), which references Ai's history of altering furniture, reassembles the stools into a completely different shape but uses the original structural logic so that it remains true to its original form. It provides a graceful and whimsical counterpoint to the accumulation of the 5,929 stools.
With this rendition of a traditional Chinese dragon kite, Ai Wei Wei uses an ancient art form to referencea stark contemporary reality. The artwork features stylized renderings of birds and plants that are icons for nations with records of violating human rights and civil liberties.

Incredible Ai Wei Wei piece... he straightened (or rather his workers) straightened 150 tonnes of rebar from poorly built schools that crumbled in the Sichuan earthquake
Did he mean to leave this kink in I wonder..?
Ceramic sculptures of crabs in a huge pile (only a small sample here) representing the free meal that artist Ai Wei Wei served people at his newly built art studio, which was ordered to be destroyed by the Chinese government.
Another spider. I think it will be going at the end of this month which is a pity. I hear that Warren Bradley's electricity bill was getting too much.
Could do with straightening now I come to look at it.
Ai Weiwei: Making Sense
LEFT RIGHT STUDIO MATERIAL, 2018
Porcelain
These fragments are the remains of Ai's porcelain sculptures that were destroyed when his 'Left Right' studio in Beijing was demolished by the Chinese state in 2018.
You can see one of the complete sculptures, Bubble, nearby. The remains are a form of evidence of the repression that Ai has suffered at the hands of the Chinese government, as well as a testament to his ability to turn destruction into art.

Ai Weiwei (born 1957) is a Chinese artist, activist, and philosopher, who is also active in architecture, curating, photography, film, and social and cultural criticism. Ai collaborated with Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron as the artistic consultant on the Beijing National Stadium for the 2008 Olympics. Besides showing his art he has been investigating in the corruption and cover-ups under the power of the government. He was particularly focused at exposing an alleged corruption scandal in the construction of Sichuan schools that collapsed during the 2008 Sichuan earthquake. He intensively uses the internet to communicate with people all over China, especially the young generation.
In October 2010, Sunflower Seeds was installed at the Tate Modern Turbine Hall, the work consists of one hundred million porcelain "seeds," each individually hand-painted in the town of Jingdezhen by 1,600 Chinese artisans, and scattered over a large area of the exhibition hall. The artist was keen for visitors to walk across and roll in the work to experience and contemplate the essence of his comment on mass consumption, Chinese industry, famine and collective work. However, on 16 October, Tate Modern stopped people from walking on the exhibit due to health liability concerns over the porcelain dust.
This is a portrait of #AiWeiWei.
In this original artwork I created, i tried to capture the feeling i imagined Mr. Wei Wei had after being beaten in prison for just doing ART! You think it is hard to create art here, try an oppressive country.
Anyway, at the insistence of Artist Dale Cipperly, I did a grid system to get the proportions dead on correct. From that springboard I went deeper, I concentrated on the shadows and the eyes to try to capture the man behind the facade. Perhaps it is projection, as I was in a mood of sorts, but from what i have read and seen I know that what i put in is there. I hope you can see some of what I put in. Simmering, angry, contained, caged, persistent, struggle, art, communication. Another layer are the words underneath the drawing and subpainting. They were not done specifically for this piece it was from a journal I had done and I believe they relate well. Then I added the flag in the back just to bring the point home, I know you noticed it but just thought I would point it out.
If you don't know about him you should find out a bit about the struggle with the chinese government that he has endured and still he stays strong. There is a great #netflix documentary on him that will tell you more than I can with words, my feelings and expression are here in paint.
I hope you enjoy!
