Brett Holden/Capt Ahab and his ability to find and catch fish have propelled him to be a top player in the sport-fishing world. With his finely honed crew and a battleship called the Booby Trap, he has become an unstoppable fishing machine. His desire for excellence has led the Booby Trap to become the top private boat in the Houston Big Game Fishing Club for 5 consecutive years! Capt Ahab is a pioneer and has become the most recognized sword fisherman in the Gulf of Mexico (read about it in the June 2011 issue of Sportfishing Magazine) catching a record 8 daytime swords in one day and has logged over 500 swordfish to date. Capt Ahab was also was behind the helm of the Booby Trap for the first ever recorded Super Grand Slam in the Gulf of Mexico, catching 2 Blue Marlin, 2 Swordfish, 2 Sailfish and a white marlin in a single day. When he fires the Booby Trap up he no longer sees her as a vessel but as a weapon, 40 knots in forward and 10 knots in reverse, he fears no seas only the fuel bill…

1 Kings 19:1-2 (ANIV)

Elijah flees to Horeb

1 Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, "May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them."

DRAWING NOTES:

TIME OF DAY:

Not specified in the Bible text. I have made it mid morning.

LIGHTING NOTES:

Sunlight from above.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:

From left to right: the messenger of Jezebel, the servant of Elijah, Elijah the prophet.

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:

This scene is set in the city of Jezreel, on the southern end of the Jezreel valley. It shows the messenger sent by Jezebel (the wife of king Ahab) pointing at the prophet Elijah, and delivering his mistresses’ threatening message. The Bible text for this story informs us that Eijah had a servant (see 1 Kings 19:3) and so I have him stopping the messenger from getting to his master.

Note that Jezebel had not been present on Mount Carmel when heavenly fire came down and burnt the sacrifice, followed by the execution of her priests of Baal. It must have been her husband king Ahab who reported to her what had taken place. This news must have infuriated Jezebel in the extreme, so she sent her messenger to threaten Elijah’s life. I expect she didn’t send guards and/or soldiers to immediately arrest Elijah because public opinion would have been very much in favour of Elijah at this time.

Elijah was probably still in the city of Jezreel, or very close by, so Jezebel’s messenger wouldn’t have had far to go to deliver her threatening message. We know from 1 Kings 18:46 that Elijah had ran ahead of Ahab all the way from Mount Carmel to the city of Jezreel. Jezebel threatened to take Elijah’s life within 24 hours, in retaliation for his slaughtering the 450 Baal prophets.

I have given the messenger of Jezebel a green robe, which is reminiscent of Jezebel’s own green robe, and so visually connects the two.

Elijah had just experienced the extraordinary power of Almighty God on the mountain of Carmel, with the fire from heaven incident and the rain storm after the drought in the land (see 1 Kings 18). It seems a little strange then, after such impressive supernatural demonstrations, that Elijah would be so frightened by Jezebel’s threat to his life. In fact he was so terrified that he ran from the city of Jezreel and went all the way to the to the southernmost town in the land, Beersheba, and even went out into the wilderness to escape from her (see 1 Kings 19:3-4).

Adith Abdul Ahab Abdo, 83, sits outside a temporary shelter provided by Caritas at an IDP centre in Erbil, Iraq, on Dec 4 2014.

His family fled their home in Qarakosh, Iraq in August, when Islamic State militants overran their town. The so-called Islamic State is a radical Islamic militant group that controls territory in both Iraq and Syria. The fall of Mosul to IS in August and their subsequent advances is thought to have displaced over 1 million people, most of whom were Yazidis, Christians and other minorities, but also Muslim families too.

He told Caritas. “I miss my home. I’ve never been away from home for Christmas. Here I get depressed and sick and have to go to the hospital. There won’t be a christmas for us this year. We’ve no money, no clothes, nothing. It won’t feel like Christmas this year.”

Caritas has assisted around 50 families here at Akito school by providing them with 36 prefabricated shelters that offer better protection from the elements and a higher degree of comfort and security than the tents in which many of the families had previously been staying.

Saadi Marzen Aboud, the settlement’s ‘Masoul’ , or leader, told Caritas: “There’s not enough water for all the families, there’s not enough electricity and we can’t afford heaters.”

A further 110 families are staying inside the school building.

Let me tell you about Ahab the Arab

The sheik of the burning sand

He had emeralds and rubies just drippin' off 'a him

And a ring on every finger of his hand

He wore a big ol' turban wrapped around his head

And a scimitar by his side

And, every evenin', about midnight

He'd jump on his camel named Clyde, and ride

Went on a whale watch and after a few minutes of watching 2 Humpback Whales seemingly high five one another, I turned around to make my way to the other side of the boat, and BAM! This huge tug was right behind our boat. Looked so impressive up close. Captain can be seen on the bow here (gives a real sense of scale) observing the whales...I guess it's just in a Captain's blood to pursue whales.

Wondering if this needs a tighter crop?

1 Kings 21:8-10 (ANIV)

8 So she [Jezabel] wrote letters in Ahab's name, placed his seal on them, and sent them to the elders and nobles who lived in Naboth's city with him. 9 In those letters she wrote: "Proclaim a day of fasting and seat Naboth in a prominent place among the people. 10 But seat two scoundrels opposite him and have them testify that he has cursed both God and the king. Then take him out and stone him to death."

DRAWING NOTES:

TIME OF DAY:

Unspecified in Bible.

LIGHTING NOTES:

Defused daylight illuminates this scene.

CHARACTERS PRESENT:

Jezebel (wife of king Ahab of Israel) is on the left.

A scribe is writing Jezebel’s letters to the elders and nobles who lived in Naboth's city.

Behind Jezebel & the scribe are various people, including soldiers/guards & others, perhaps courtiers in the palace of the king?

RESEARCH/ADDITIONAL NOTES:

The setting for this scene is not specified in the Bible verses above. I presume Jezebel is in a room available to her in Ahab’s palace.

I imagine that Jezebel was not able to read & write. At the time she lived I expect there were not that many literate people around. For this reason I have introduced a scribe, who is sitting at a desk of wood, with the various trappings of someone who can read & write: a scroll, ink, a stylus/reed pen, etc. Jezebel is dictating her letters to the scribe, who writes them down for her. In Jezebel’s hand is a metal tipped wooden seal (king Ahab’s) which she will seal the letters up with. The wax seal on a letter (with the embossed emblem of the writer stamped into the hot wax) provided proof of who sent it, & that the letter hadn’t been opened before delivery to its intended recipient.

I typed the phrase “Proclaim a day of fasting and seat Naboth in a prominent place among the people” into the internet to get a translation into Hebrew text. That is what is written on the scribe’s scroll, on the table.
