After the Victoria's Secret fashion show this year, me and my roommates decided to put our wishful thinking to use.

Richmond Hill, Queens NY. Several trees and tree limbs litter the streets.

Typhoon Pablo ( International name Bopha) was the strongest tropical cyclone recorded in Mindanao after 1970's Typhoon Kate. It made landfall over Banganga, Davao Oriental on December 3 as a Category 5 Super Typhoon with maximum 1-minute winds of up to 260 kph. The storm has caused crop damage worth 8.5 billion pesos ($210 million), 700 confirmed dead and 800 more missing.

At the top of my street. This house was most likely originally part of our village, and built by the mill. the 100 acres that the non-profit bought in 1998 did not include one of the old churches on the edge of the property, nor several buildings near the church, nor the school for the mill children.

Our homeowners' association has taken some steps to protect some of the land that is unprotected, and we purchased several acres to keep it from being developed.

Unfortunately, the church that owned this building didn't want it. A tree hit it about 2 years ago, and then they had a sign offering it for free if you moved it, and last week the vinyl siding was removed. That should have been my hint as to what was going to happen next.

I drove home last night and saw the smoke above the trees from far away, but it didn't occur to me what was happening until I got there. This is the first time I have been witness to the old preservationist urban legend: that the fire department burns down houses for practice. I've told people so many times about the practice, especially since several houses in our neighborhood suffered this fate, that I think I forgot it was something people still did.

It felt like someone punched me in the stomach to drive by this.

fun, messy, fast-paced work,

all the while hoping the clouds will keep the sun at bay so the concrete doesn't set up too fast.

and hoping those clouds won't split wide open into a downpour filling the forms with too much water.

ah, june!

this day it was red, orange, grey and white.

the following day was blue and green.

oh dear, this pic reminds me a little to much of the berkeley pit.

Taken yesterday, 3/29, outside of Wilmington, DE. Spectacular clouds created by a fast moving storm that brought twenty minutes of torrential downpour, high winds and hail. This same storm spawned a tornado in Lancaster, PA.

The demonstration of old Georgian fighting methods was a little too real. The swords are metal, but unsharpened, however they can still can cause injuries.

In need of a shower and shave.

Still working on the technique...if anyone knows how to blend the pieces more seemlessly together, I could really use the help!! lol...Thanks!

The aftermath of an earthquake in Muzafarrabad, Pakistan. --- 13 Oct 2005, Muzafarrabad, Pakistan ---

What happened here?

After 30 years the landscape still shows the scars from the blast on Mt St Helens.

My desk is nearly always pretty tidy...except after a few friends have been around and the discussion moves to music and old photos which need scanning.

I didn't want to tell you during the series, but one of the small cubs (not one whose photo I posted) fell from a tree to his death....thank goodness children had already left the viewing deck and didn't see this. The mother bear tried to rouse him/her to no avail and finally took him by scruff of neck to a nearby wooded area and put branches over him. In the meantime the other three cubs stayed up in a tree. We returned the next evening at 5 and heard that the mother came back that morning and took the little cub's body deeper into the woods....the staff did not know whether she would bring the remaining three cubs back to this area or not....but she did, about an hour after we came.

We learned more about bear behavior from the staff.....that at times, mothers would come to the feeding area with fewer or no cubs (after having brought them previous days) so something had happened to them in the meanwhile...

This was the first time ever....that a cub had died right there, in the sanctuary. Other times, when they had fallen from a tree and been injured, sometimes not very badly; they stayed with their mother and all was well. If the injuries were more severe and the mothers couldn't deal with them, they were taken to a rehabilitation center by a staff member. Cubs falling from trees was a rare occurrence we were told.

Everyone was stunned when this happened to the cub....it felt to me like when we had a tragedy at the school where I had taught, and the counselors and we teachers talked to the students, were available for them.....this time, the roles were reversed....the staff talked to us, but they were shaken as well.

No need to comment, flickr friends....just wanted you to know........Pat

Flickr frustrates me with the way it changes photos. People seem to complain about its sharpening, but in this case it seems to have softened my shot.

We had a tornado hit near us last night, our neighborhood is just behind the tree-line you can see there. Jen saw the tornado and we went into the basement but it was over in less than a minute. Hopefully this means this exact area won't be hit again any time soon.

Guess what it is, and how it ended up like this....

when i saw the petals and rice on the ground i grabbed my camera, then this guy appeared and started sweeping - I squealed "stop", and he stopped in his tracks, wondering what on earth he had done wrong... finally I think his feet and broom made the photo more interesting!

A study in texture

While walking from Meriken park back towards Sannomiya, I happened upon the Hamate Bypass Hesai Kouzoubutsu tenji monument.

This is a crumbling column of reinforced concrete that was once part of the Hamate Bypass, destroyed in the Great Hanshin Earthquake. It, and a few other pieces, make up a small roadside memorial displaying how the power of the quake collapsed the roadway
