Monknash, The Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales, UK

Once known as Traeth yr Aes, Monknash is a beach of mostly rocks, rockpools and wave cut shore platforms. The cliffs are blue lias and very unstable.

In 2014 skeletal legs were found poking out of the cliff face. The remains are around 800 years old and it's believed the area was used as a burial ground for the monks who occupied the area in the 13th century.

Three Hawaiian stilts finish the day fishing in the calm mud flats of Kealia Pond. The Hawaiian stilt is a non-migratory, endemic subspecie (Himantopus mexicanus knudseni) that is endangered due to loss of habitat. It feeds on fish and arthropods in shallow shoreline ponds and wetlands.

Monitoring the incoming tide in a marsh pond, this handsome male ae’o searches for fish, arthropods, invertebrates, and an occasional drink of water. Periodically flooded by tides, this type of coastal ecosystem is the favorite habitat of Hawaiian stilts. Though frequently seen in the main Hawaiian archipelago, ae’o, the Hawaiian stilt, is listed as endangered due to loss of habitat and predation by introduced species.

Happy Nature Photography Day!

Monitoring the incoming tide, this elegant female ae’o searches for fish, arthropods, and various invertebrates in a coastal salt marsh. Periodically flooded by tides, this type of coastal ecosystem is the favorite habitat of Hawaiian stilts. A non-migratory, endemic subspecies of the black neck stilt, it has the second longest legs (after flamingos) relative to body size among birds. Though frequently seen in the main Hawaiian archipelago, the ae’o is listed as endangered due to loss of habitat and predation by introduced species.

Strongly flapping with trailing legs under overcast sky, an ae’o announces its arrival at a coastal wetland with a loud chirping sound. I observed this Hawaiian stilt throughout the morning visiting several marsh areas along the banks of Pearl Harbor.
