This is a mechanical adding machine that works with a stylus. Lacking the stylus, I used the metal tip of a dart to try it out. You add numbers from 1 to 99 by putting the stylus into the hole next to the number you want to add, and then drag it clockwise until the stylus hits the "stop" at position 0 (upper-right of photo). The wheel shows the total in the little window, and each time the total on the big wheel goes from 99 to 0, it moves one space on the small wheel to add 1 to the hundreds counter. You can add hundreds by selecting holes on the smaller wheel and dragging them to the stop in a similar manner. The big wheel goes from 0 to 99, and the small wheel from 0 to 49, so you can use this to add numbers up to 4999. This belonged to my grandfather, and my mom remembers using it as a child to verify her addition problems for school.
