墨爾本Melbourne近郊位於Ballarat的Sovereign hill是一個在1850年代被發現的金礦區。
墨爾本會開發是因為作為澳洲大陸通往塔斯馬尼亞島（Tasmania）的交通出入口，原本塔斯州的州長只計畫遷入少許人口在此開墾定居以做港口之用，沒想到後來在近郊Sovereign hill發現金礦，引起淘金熱潮，吸引一批一批的人進入此區，其中包含有中國廣東沿海一代的華人，這些華人稱美國的San Francisco為舊金山，而稱澳洲的Melbourne為新金山。
今日的Sovereign hill已經無金可淘，取而代之的是一個保留1850年代維多利亞風格的觀光景點 – 淘金小鎮，小鎮內的居民或說是臨時演員，穿著打扮、行為舉止完全都要符合當時的時代背景，還有整個小鎮的造景、建築內容和日常生活的各行各業，麵包店、酒吧、保齡球館、教堂、戲院、郵局、服裝店、印刷店、蠟燭店，甚至是棺材店靈車等等應有盡有。在此地的郵局寄出的卡片上面會有很可愛精緻的馬車郵戳，保齡球館可以體驗古人打保齡球的古老球道，服裝店的二樓有個可愛的老奶奶很認真的縫東西，印刷店提供印上你名字的海報或購物袋的客製化服務，蠟燭店可以付費自己動手做手染蠟燭，麵包店和餐廳則提供美食。
在這小鎮裡固定的時間會有固定的表演，展現當時生活的這種特色，像是紅衣衛兵的鳴槍典禮、煉金室的煉金術師、居民的起義，還可以下到幾十公尺的地下礦坑參觀當時工具設備不足底下惡劣的全黑暗工作環境。
我們找機會跟偽裝成當地舊時代居民的臨時演員聊天，他們連隨意聊天的內容都要保持他們是古時候人的模樣，真是很有趣的地方，如果有時間可以停留到晚上則會有火燒樓房的聲光劇場，但為了趕車我們匆匆在下午就離開了。
