French postcard by Sonis, no. C. 517. Photo: Studio Canal + (U.S.). Kurt Russell in Stargate (Roland Emmerich, 1994).

American actor Kurt Russell (1951) started his career as a child star in numerous TV series and Walt Disney Company films. He was nominated for an Emmy Award for his title role in John Carpenter's television film Elvis (1979) and five years later for a Golden Globe for his supporting role in Silkwood (1983). Russell worked repeatedly with directors John Carpenter and Quentin Tarantino.

Kurt Vogel Russell was born in Springfield, Massachusetts, in 1951. He is the son of actor Bing Russell, known for his role as the sheriff on the TV Western Bonanza, and dancer Louise Julia (née Crone). His family relocated to California when he was a child, and Russell grew up in Thousand Oaks. Kurt appeared in the television series Sugarfoot as early as 1957. His film debut was the Elvis Presley vehicle It Happened at the World's Fair (Norman Taurog, 1961). He played a boy who kicked a pilot (Elvis Presley) in the leg. At twelve, he made his first major appearance as Jaimie McPheeters in the Western TV series The Travels of Jaimie McPheeters (1963-1964). The series also featured Dan O'Herlihy, Charles Bronson and the then very young Osmonds. In 1966, Russell signed a ten-year contract with Walt Disney Productions and acted in the films Follow Me, Boys! (Norman Tokar, 1966) with Fred MacMurray, The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes (Robert Butler, 1969), Now You See Him, Now You Don't (Robert Butler, 1972) and The Strongest Man in the World (Vincent McEveety, 1975). Russell became the studio's top star of the 1970s. In 1970, he also recorded an unsuccessful pop album, 'Kurt Russell', for Capitol. After his experiences as a child star, he played baseball during the first half of the 1970s. He played second base on a minor league team for the California Angels (now the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim). After suffering a rotator cuff injury to one shoulder, he was forced to retire from the sport in 1973. He then turned his full attention back to acting. In 1979, he played Elvis Presley in the television movie Elvis (John Carpenter, 1979) in which his then-wife Season Hubley played Priscilla. This would transition Russell's Hollywood career after years as a child actor. It also led to a series of collaborations with director John Carpenter. AllMovie: "His next role as a sleazy used car salesman in Robert Zemeckis' hilariously caustic Used Cars (1980) allowed him to counter his wholesome, all-American nice guy image, and prove that he was an actor of untapped range. Director Carpenter recognized this and cast Russell as ruthless mercenary Snake Plissken in his brooding sci-fi/action film Escape From New York (1981). The role would prove to be one of legendary status and one that would cement Russell as a cult hero for generations to come. Carpenter also cast Russell as a scientist stranded in the Antarctic in his chilling 1982 remake of The Thing. Realizing that his characters were larger than life, Russell typically played them with a subtle tongue-in-cheek quality." Another success was Silkwood (Mike Nichols, 1983) with Meryl Streep and Cher. The success of that film helped him break into a more mainstream arena. In 1983, Kurt Russell fell in love with Goldie Hawn, while shooting Swing Shift (Jonathan Demme, 1984). The film flopped but the two have been a couple ever since. Their next joint film, the hilarious comedy Overboard (Garry Marshall, 1987) was a success. Other memorable films are the comedy Rocket Man (Roger Spottiswoode, 1986) starring Robin Williams, Big Trouble in Little China (John Carpenter, 1986) and Winter People (Ted Kotcheff, 1989).

Kurt Russell's career seemed to slip until he got the lead opposite Sylvester Stallone in Tango & Cash (Andrej Konchalovskiy, Albert Magnoli, 1989), as Patrick Swayze refused the role. Russell's role in Backdraft (Ron Howard, 1991) marked his comeback, while Dennis Quaid was the first choice for that role. He was the star of the Science Fiction film Stargate (Roland Emmerich, 1994) about a stargate that allows one to travel from one planet to another and back again. The blockbuster eventually formed the basis for the Stargate series in 1997 with Richard Dean Anderson in Russell's role. Russell returned as Snake Plisskin in Escape from L.A. (John Carpenter, 1996). He also co-wrote the screenplay with John Carpenter and Debra Hill. Another highlight in his career is Grindhouse (Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino, 2007), split into two separate stories; Death Proof and Planet Terror. Tarantino directed Death Proof. Russell starred in Tarantino's Death Proof as the psychopathic Stuntman Mike who kills young women with his stunt car. He co-starred as Mr. Nobody in the action hit Furious 7/Fast & Furious 7 (James Wan, 2015), starring Vin Diesel and Paul Walker. He reunited with Quentin Tarantino for the Western The Hateful Eight (Quentin Tarantino, 2015) starring Samuel Jackson and Jennifer Jason Leigh, and the action film Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (Quentin Tarantino, 2019) with Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie. Russell returned as Mr. Nobody in The Fate of the Furious/Fast & Furious 8 (G. Gary Gray, 2017), another smash hit, and F9/F9: The Fast Saga (Justin Lin, 2021). In 2017, Russell and Hawn received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in a joint ceremony. That year, he was seen in the Marvel epic Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (James Gunn 2017) in the role of Ego. The following year, he played Santa Claus in the Christmas film The Christmas Chronicles (Clay Kaytis, 2018). Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn live on a ranch near Aspen. Russell has a son from his first marriage to Season Hubley, Boston Russell, and a son with Hawn, Wyatt Russell. He also has a stepdaughter and a stepson, Kate Hudson and Oliver Hudson, the daughter and son of Goldie Hawn and Bill Hudson.

William Henry Crane (1845-1928), American actor, was born on 30 April 1845, in Leicester, Massachusetts, and made his first appearance at Utica, New York, in Donizetti's Daughter of the Regiment in 1863. Later he had a great success as Le Blanc the Notary, in the burlesque Evangelie (1873). He made his first hit in the legitimate drama with Stuart Robson (1836-1903), in The Comedy of Errors and other Shakespearian plays, and in The Henrietta (1881) by Bronson Howard (1842-1908). This partnership lasted for twelve years, and subsequently Crane appeared in various eccentric character parts in such plays as The Senator and David Harum. In 1904 he turned to more serious work and played Isidore Izard in Business is business, an adaptation from Octave Mirbeau's Les Affaires sont les Affaires.

In his 70s, Crane appeared in a number of films, notably in a reprise of his role in David Harum (1915). He also appeared in MGM's Three Wise Fools, a film recently revived on Turner Classic Movies and is available on home video/dvd. He died 7 March 1928 at the Hotel Hollywood.

Constanitn Munteanu (Femeia Moldovei, 1980, nr. 3)

Your heart may beat a little faster when you see GIFs of a ruggedly handsome Chris Pratt and his hot muscles. In one of the most recently released Jurassic World clips, the actor sports a perfectly tight t-shirt in a scene where he flirts with his costar Bryce Dallas Howard.

West German postcard by Kunst und Bild, Berlin-Charlottenburg, no T 880. Photo: Warner Bros. Gordon MacRae in Return of the Frontiersman (Richard L. Bare, 1950).

With his handsome boy-next-door looks, deep baritone, and glorious smile, Gordon MacRae (1920-1986) was successful as a singer and musical actor. He was best known for five films with Doris Day and his roles in the film versions of two Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, Oklahoma! (1955) and Carousel (1956).

Albert Gordon MacRae was born in East Orange, New Jersey, in 1920. He was the son of radio singer and tool maker ‘Wee Willie’ MacRae, and Helen Violet Sonn, a concert pianist. When he was very young, his family moved to Syracuse, NY, where he attended Nottingham High School, participating in the Drama Club. It was during this time that he also learned to play the piano, the clarinet and the saxophone. He graduated from Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts, in 1940 and won a singing contest sponsored by Picture Magazine at age 19,. The prize was a two-week engagement at the New York World's Fair performing with the Harry James and Les Brown bands. Shortly afterwards, he obtained work as a singer with the Horace Heidt Band in New York City. The singer stayed with Heidt's outfit for a couple of years before enlisting in the armed forces. In 1941, he wed actress and singer Sheila Margot Stephens. They would have four children: Meredith, Heather, William and Robert, and both, Meredith and Heather MacRae would pursue acting careers. During World War II, he joined the Army Air Force, serving as a navigator for two years. At the end of the war, he returned to New York City, where he made his Broadway debut in the show ‘Junior Miss’, as a replacement in the role of Tommy Arbuckle. In 1946, he appeared in Ray Bolger's Broadway revue ‘Three to Make Ready’. A Capitol Records talent scout saw him in it and signed him to a long-term recording contract. He would stay with Capitol Records for the next twenty years. Beginning in 1947, MacRae's releases for Capitol were quite successful. Through 1954 he scored numerous hits, among them ‘Rambling Rose’, ‘So in Love’, ‘It's Magic’, ‘I Still Get Jealous’, ‘Hair of Gold, Eyes of Blue’, and ‘At the Candlelight Café’. Following an absence of four years from the charts, ‘The Secret’ brought about his return. Many of his hit recordings were made with Jo Stafford. MacRae also put out an album in collaboration with his wife, Sheila MacRae. During the late 1940s MacRae landed a starring role in the music-based program ‘The Railroad Hour’, where he remained through 1954 despite a change of networks. It presented operettas and musicals, all starring MacRae and many different leading ladies.

In 1948, Gordon MacRae signed a seven-year contract with Warner Brothers Studio. His first film was a non-musical boxing drama, The Big Punch (Sherry Shourds, 1948), opposite Lois Maxwell, later known as Miss Moneypenny in the James Bond films. His next film was a musical with June Haver and Ray Bolger, Look for the Silver Lining (David Butler, 1949). Several musical films were soon to follow which highlighted his singing talent. He starred in five fondly remembered films with Doris Day, beginning with Tea for Two (David Butler, 1950). In 1951, they starred in On Moonlight Bay (Roy Del Ruth, 1951, followed by the sequel By the Light of the Silvery Moon (David Butler, 1953). That same year, he also starred opposite Kathryn Grayson in the third film version of The Desert Song (H. Bruce Humberstone, 1953). This was followed by his two best-remembered roles as Curly in Oklahoma! (Fred Zinnemann, 1955), and as Billy Bigelow in Carousel (Henry King, 1956). In both Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals, he had appeared previously on Broadway and in both films, he co-starred with Shirley Jones. While appearing in a nightclub act with his wife at Lake Tahoe, he received an emergency phone call to replace Frank Sinatra as Billy Bigelow in the film version of Rodgers and Hammerstein's stage hit Carouse", after Sinatra walked out on the filming when he discovered that every scene was to be filmed twice - once for regular CinemaScope and once for CinemaScope 55. Within three days, MacRae, who had wanted to play the role, reported to the set. Ironically, the producers then discovered a way to shoot in CinemaScope 55 and then convert it to regular CinemaScope without shooting the film twice.

In 1956, Gordon MacRae moved to television with his own show, The Gordon MacRae Show which lasted only one season. He also frequently turned up on such popular television shows as The Colgate Comedy Hour. At this stage, he began drinking heavily, eventually becoming an alcoholic which may have cost him his marriage. Sheila divorced him in 1967. MacRae remarried just four months later to Elizabeth ‘Liz’ Lambert Schrafft. She would remain with him until the end of his life and the couple raised one daughter, Amanda Mercedes MacRae born in 196.. During the 1960s he appeared often on the Ed Sullivan Show. In 1974, he appeared as a sheriff on an episode of the TV series McCloud, starring Dennis Weaver. By the late 1970s he claimed to have wrested control over his alcohol addiction and he went on to counsel other alcoholics. His last film appearance was in 1979. He played the supporting role of Joe Barnes in the drama The Pilot (Cliff Robertson, 1980) in which Cliff Robertson held the lead role of an alcoholic pilot. In 1982, MacRae suffered a stroke. With the support of his wife and children, he kept touring and singing hits from his earlier years. In the fall of 1985, he underwent a carotid artery operation. At that time, he was diagnosed with cancer and was forced to retire completely. Gordon MacRae died in 1986 of pneumonia, from complications due to cancer of the mouth and jaw at his home in Lincoln, Nebraska. He was only 64. The actor was interred at the Wyuka Cemetery in Lincoln, Nebraska.
