In recent decades, developments in software and hardware technologies have created dramatic shifts in design, manufacturing and research. Software technologies have facilitated automated process and new solutions for complex problems. Computation has also become a platform for creativity through generative art and design. New hardware platforms and digital fabrication technologies have similarly transformed manufacturing, offering more efficient production and mass customization. Such advances have helped catalyzed the maker-movement, democratizing design and maker culture. This influx of new capabilities to design, compute and fabricate like never before, has sparked a renewed interest in material performance.

We are now witnessing significant advances in active matter, 3D/4D Printing, materials science, synthetic biology, DNA nanotechnology and soft robotics, which have led to the convergence of software, hardware and material technologies and the growing field of programmable materials.

This conference was about the emerging field of active matter and programmable materials that bridges the worlds of art, science, engineering and design, demonstrating new perspectives for computation, transformation and dynamic material applications.

If over the past few decades we have experienced a software revolution, and more recently, a hardware revolution, this conference aims to discuss the premises, challenges and innovations brought by today’s materials revolution. We can now sense, compute, and actuate with materials alone, just as we could with software and hardware platforms previously. How does this shift influence materials research, and how does it shape the future of design, arts, and industrial applications? What tools and design processes do we need to advance, augment and invent new materials today? What are the key roles that industry, government, academic and public institutions can play in catalyzing the field of programmable materials?

This two-day conference consisted of a range of talks and lively discussion from leading researchers in materials science, art & design, synthetic biology and soft-robotics along with leaders from government, public institutions and industry.

Active Assignment Weekly: Jan 11 to Jan 18: 'Something with Meaning'

What a great assignment, a moment to pause and look around at all the things that mean something to you. I loved every fustrating moment of this assignment!!

With that said..............what to photograph..........so many things mean so much to me. My family, extended and immediate, my friends near and far, my work.................. on and on.

But then I noticed that for the last 2 weeks all my attention was focused on this broken camera.............as if one of my family members had been injured.........

This camera was my first digital.......... picked out for me by my husband who was scared to death to pick the wrong thing. I recieved it on Christmas in 2006,................I cried and was truly touched at his push for me to continue with the love I had found behind the camera. To show the world what I saw..........in my way.

Any one who knows me knows that this camera is almost always with me, whether in my camera bag, in my purse, or around my neck............I have captured more moments than I can count or would want to.

I recently got a Sony an actual DSLR, but my first love will always be the Panasonic "DSLR wanna be" :)

So I was devestated when after carting it to work with me in a bag I don't usually use it dropped out and bounced across the frozen ground. Tired.........I never turned it on til the next day when then I found nothing but a black screen and it taking only all black images.................again I cried. Told myself "you have the Sony".............that did not help.........I still cried.

My husband lovingly looked for the paper work (which even after all this time I am not allowed to see) and found that the warranty did not end til Feb. 2010 YAY!!

Packaged it up shipped it out and have been waiting for it to come home...........anyone who knows me knows that I am one of the lucky with an address that confuses the whole postal set up in this are LOL ..............so a two day shipment that should have happened last week has finished today, with my baby coming home, as of this moment I am sighing in releif as it warms up and I wait to make sure that all is ok with it again.

Some of the things that mean the most to us are the ones we never saw coming............or realize until something happens to it.

Would I have fixed it without the warranty covering it...................yes, and that is how I know this things means so much to me. I would have never thought an object could become such a part of me, and who I am.

For more information on the day, please see www.mindsways.com/SMS/ and for a brochure of what the day is about, please look at www.mindsways.com/SMS/.

Over the past 18 Months I have been running these Sleight of Mind Set Workshops throughout the country, and I am really pleased with the feedback, it has been tremendous, please don't just take my word for it, (I am after all biased) please see what people have said by going to www.mindsways.com/what-people-say/

For over twenty five years I have seen how magic can add value to delivery. There are a lot of unknown techniques out there, many of them psychological, that engages and attracts people. The Sleight of Mind Set workshop is all about how you can tap into this rich stream of ideas and "Mind Magic's" enduring popularity. The day looks at two paths running together, one learning the tricks and effects, the other why and how they add value to us.

They start at 10:00 a.m. and finish at 4:30 p.m. For more information about the workshops, please got to www.mindsways.com/SMS/

THINKING OUTSIDE THE BOX - OR CLINGING TO THE LID

Many people claim that the answers to creativity, standing out from the crowd and finding solutions to problems is thinking outside the box. Although, I see many people who cling ferociously on to the lid. Psychological Artistry and Mind Magic, as well as the tools and techniques contained within them are definitely off the lid. For more, see the Sleight Of Mind Set page at www.mindsways.com/SMS/Explaining what you can achieve with these tools is wonderful. For me, I find it deeply rewarding when I see and the results that have been created using these tools and techniques. Don't just take my word for it, see What People Say About Us at www.mindsways.com/what-people-say/.

The Sleight Of Mind Set day is not just about learning the Mind Magic tricks, (these are quick to learn, but create much to be thought about) what makes it thrilling is what you can build with them for yourself. You can build pieces into your delivery, making this very personal to you. You can take these pieces and use them to ignite a powerful response in others, engaging and involving them in your ideas and what you do. Our focus is around Showing Not Telling which is about illuminating and animating your ideas and concepts. This contributes greatly to leaving people delighted, energized, interested and wanting more.

To find out more about Mind Magic and its uses, please go to www.mindsways.com/SMS/

THE POWER OF PSYCHOLOGICAL ARTISTRY

The approach we take is what we call Psychological Artistry and this involves using a blend of psychology, mind magic (or mentalism), personal development and smart thinking ideas. By tapping into people's imagination, curiosity and desire for mystery we can engage people in all different areas. By adding in psychological approaches, this is strengthened. I appreciate that by its very nature, it is not a traditional approach but that is where its power lies.

Psychological Artistry is about blending the world of art and psychology. It's about showing the beautiful flaws in our thinking and how we can use them. It's about magnifying how we all think and giving you the opportunity to change it.

A couple of interesting examples the McGurk effect and Prof Richard Wiseman's "The Incredible Colour Changing Card Effect". Please see www.mindsways.com/SMS for these and other incredible videos. I would love to know what you think. These illustrate both the power and the approach of psychological artistry.

STANDING OUT FROM THE CROWD - CREATING YOUR DIFFERENCE

This learning works on a number of levels. On the workshops, we look at what Mind Magic reveals about how we think, act and behave. This allows us to understand the environment we're in.

Whilst doing this, we're also tapping into the fact that performing and illustrating illusions holds a deep fascination for people. This is what allows us to stand out from the crowd. Below are a few quotes of what people have said about the workshop:

"A truly inspiring experience is how I'd best describe the Sleight of Mind Set workshop."

"I came away with lots of ideas to create drama and interest in my training delivery."

"The whole group laughed many times and were absolutely fascinated by each technique."

BEING DIFFERENT - NO, REALLY DIFFERENT

This programme is good for anyone looking for something different and to stimulate new styles of thinking.  The feedback has definitely been that it has satisfied the thirst for new ideas whilst ticking all of the edutrainment boxes.  This programme is for you if you are interested in any of the following:

Human Behaviour & Psychology

Influence & Persuasion

How We Think

Magic & Magicians

New Experiences

Learning & Teaching

Framing Your Ideas

The day is all about

Exploring the art of possibility

Stimulating creativity and innovation

Transforming personal and professional life

Tapping into your imagination

On the personal development level, it is about transforming

Self esteem

Self confidence

Self awareness

Self motivation

for yourself and others. Overall it acts a catalyst for your future development.

It is intended for people who are curious, want to improve how they connect, express and communicate with others. Overall, it is about adding new skills to you and being able to apply the techniques and ideas from Psychological Artistry and Mind Magic to maximise what you do.

MindSways sessions are based on a unique blend of magic, science, psychological artistry, design and smart thinking. All of this allows you to work with individuals, groups and organisations in an original and dynamic way.  It also means that by being trained in these psychological subtleties and powerful techniques, you can add a unique twist to your activities.

Our success in life depends critically on two things; our capacity for insight into our own mental world and that of other people. One of the benefits of learning and applying Mind Magic and psychological artistry is that it puts our thinking habits and styles back on our radar. This is only one aspect of the many benefits that people find when they have worked with us over the past few months. For what others have said please take a look at www.mindsways.com/what-people-say/  ;

"Thanks to you both for a challenging, stimulating and enjoyable day"

"I've had plenty of thoughts about how some of the approaches used might be incorporated into several areas of my work"

"A great course, with plenty to think about and over"

This is an unorthodox approach to understanding human behaviour, illustrating and promoting our messages, and this is where the real power lies. As Marty Neumeier says in ZAG " Be Different - No, Really Different". For more on what people say, please see www.mindsways.com/what-people-say/and for more on the workshops themselves, please go to www.mindsways.com/SMS/

So I'm living in Ottawa now, and I've noticed "active lifestyle" is a really big thing... considering the number of outdoor venues I'm not surprised. I think it's really interesting and I hope to document it in abstract ways this summer while I'm here.

Sorry for the break in updates, I've got a big backlog of stuff to go through after my trip to Waterloo and Engagement photo session with my friends Carly and Ryan at the end of April.

I have plenty of free time on my hands though, being on my own in Ottawa, so I should be back up to regular posting soon!

Thanks for stopping by!
