Nikolai is actually pretty shy around strangers - until he gets to
know someone, there is a biological fear that the stranger is a
predator and the suspicion that birds will be eaten if noticed.
Eventually he realizes that new people represent an opportunity to beg
for snacks or scritches, and all is good. Until that time however,
Nikki will attempt to be invisible. He will make himself small and he
will cover his beak to look non-threatening and he will remain very
very still. This is the body-language you see here - I've lured him
out of the back corner of his cage and now he's on my knee, carefully
watching the scary houseguest sitting next to me. Eventually the ice
thawed as he figured out that the strange new man was kinda nice. At
the last stages of this process he will "name" the new person - a
unique series of clucks or even their real name. After the last visit
from my son, Nikki would look around in the morning at breakfast,
noticed that we were one person short. A puzzled look and then:
"Christopher?". That first happened last year and Nikki still does it
about once per day.
