I took this photo twenty minutes ago at Loch Hosta where I'm staying on North Uist. It was just a. beautiful soft sky and as there was hardly a. ripple on the loch I couldn't resist my Achilles heel of taking reflections. It was wonderful standing there as Snipe drummed corncrakes raspingly called and a short eared owl gracefully hunted nearby. All in all an idyllic start to another Hebridean day. The Achilles, Achilles Morpho, Blue-banded Morpho, or Banded Blue Morpho (Morpho achilles) is a Neotropical butterfly.
The genus name Morpho comes from the Greek epithet of Aphrodite, goddess of love. Achilles was a Greek hero of the Trojan War, the central character of Homer's Iliad.
In Morpho achilles the dorsal sides of the forewings are black, with two broad vertical bands of brilliant blue. The underside of the hindwings is olive-brownish, with several ocelli formed by blue, yellow, red, and red concentric rings.
It differs from the Morpho peleides or Common Morpho which has extensive blue on the wings instead of bands.

The basilica of Saint Achilles is one of the oldest monuments in the area of Prespes. The church was built in 983 or 986 by Bulgarian Tsar Samuel to house the relics of Larisa's patron Saint Achilles that Samuel had taken when the city conquered by Bulgarians. The name of the Saint, which was given to the largest island of small Prespa Lake where the church of Saint Achilles is situated, survived like its ruins through centuries of severe wars and many different conquerors.
A heavily modified variant of the Hādosheru. This big guy isn’t built for battle, but more to walk through the woods with you and admire flowers and birds. Why? I don’t know.
Frankly I much prefer the leg design on this than the original, it’s a lot easier to pose and more identifiable as a leg in my opinion.
Another take on this super location. The tower of "All Saints" Church dominates the scene here, unused as a place of worship since 1984. 68023 "Achilles" with the 1F52 06.28 York to Liverpool Lime Street.

The Achilles blue morpho (Morpho achilles) is one of the 29 accepted species and 147 subspecies under the genus Morpho.
This South American butterfly is also known as the blue-banded morpho, Achilles morpho, or banded blue morpho.
Matt black and broad blue bands distinguish this species from other morphos. The wingspan is 11 - 15 cm.
The Achilles blue morpho can be found over a huge range of countries, particularly in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela.
This species is restricted to rainforest habitats at altitudes between 0 - 1000 m. Males patrol back and forth along rivers and streams, searching for females. They are most active in the mornings, and spend most of the afternoon visiting sap runs, feeding at rotting fruit or sitting motionless on foliage in the darkness of the forest. Females, which are recognisable by the wider dark borders on the uppersides, are seen far less frequently.
This picture was taken in the tropical butterfly house of the botanical garden of the Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

Achilles, the super hero of Homer's Iliad, does not really shine in Pat Barker's retelling of the story ("The Silence of the Girls"). She describes his complex psychology as amphibious and oscillating between feminine vulnerability and ultra-brutal tantrums of violence. He appears to be an overgrown baby and his needs are equally infantile. Even his appalling sex life is that of mummy's lost little boy, permanently searching for his mum, hence oedipal in nature. Time to grow up - for all the super heroes wasting humanity's time.

Greece is a fairly small country but it has so many islands worth visiting that you would need a life time to actually visit and discover all of them. A couple years ago I visited the island of Corfu which is located at the northwestern part of Greece. Big island that it would require a few days if you want to actually explore all of it. This picture was taken at the Achilleion palace, a summer mansion built in 1890 for the Austrian empress Elisabeth, also known as Sisi. A majestic place, with lovely views of the island and decorated (and named) after Achilles. This is a statue of the ancient Greek war hero from the main terrace just a little after sunset.

Sending off a glancing kiss
To those who claim they know
Below the streets that steam and hiss
The devil's in his hole
Oh to sail away
To sandy lands and other days
Oh to touch the dream
Hides inside and never seen, yeah
Into the sun, the south, the north
At last the birds have flown
Shackles of commitments fell
In pieces on the ground
Oh, to ride the wind
To tread the air above the din
Oh, to laugh aloud
Dancing as we fought the crowd, yeah
To seek the man whose pointing hand
The giant step unfolds
To guide us from the curving path
That turns our feet to stone
If one bell should ring
In celebration for a king
So fast the heart should beat
As proud the head, with heavy feet, yeah
A shot from inside the cave at Cathedral Rock. First time shooting from in there.
The sky was non inspiring this morning, so I’ve intentionally blown the highlights to give the image a mysterious look.
Hope you like “Achilles Last Stand”
