Inspired by the movie "Troy" ... don't judge me :P

No, I don't know, whether Achilles in Trojan War times used white or rather less common pink Yarrow to treat his soldiers. The story is that he used our plant to staunch bleeding.

Indeed they're mostly white on these banks of the Meuse River, but I did see a nice patch of pink.

I had a fantastic day on the beach yesterday, watching waterfalls be swept upwards, getting drenched by rain and hail showers, and being battered by wind and sun. I love days like that, changing every second. This is just after one of those hail showers when the sun streamed under the clouds. My Achilles will always be days on the beach, I can never resist. It is said Yarrow's Latin name comes from the story that the great Greek hero Achilles used it to help heal his wounds. Of course, it didn't help the heel wound caused by a poisoned arrow shot off by Paris. It killed him...

Here a flower umbel is offering sustenance to a small Potter Wasp, identified by Bernhard Jacobi as an Ancistrocerus. Many thanks!

I took this photo twenty minutes ago at Loch Hosta where I'm staying on North Uist. It was just a. beautiful soft sky and as there was hardly a. ripple on the loch I couldn't resist my Achilles heel of taking reflections. It was wonderful standing there as Snipe drummed corncrakes raspingly called and a short eared owl gracefully hunted nearby. All in all an idyllic start to another Hebridean day. Yarrow (Achillea) is a genus of about 85 flowering plants in the Asteraceae family (Compositae).

Because the stems are branched only at the tip, the small flowers appear as if arranged in umbels. The inflorescence is a cluster of heads. The leaves are aromatic and often hairy, reminiscent of fern leaves.

The genus is named after the Greek hero Achilles. He is said to have used this plant to heal a wound in the Trojan War.

Achilles comes into Burghead harbour today

A heavily modified variant of the Hādosheru. This big guy isn’t built for battle, but more to walk through the woods with you and admire flowers and birds. Why? I don’t know.

Frankly I much prefer the leg design on this than the original, it’s a lot easier to pose and more identifiable as a leg in my opinion.

King Priam of Troy (represented by Werner) tries to persuade Achilles (represented by a plaster cast of Antinous) to return the desecrated body of his son, Hector, by appealing to the gods, to Achilles' humanity, by making himself vulnerable and by bringing some gifts. Homer's Iliad has still something important to say. Leica M mono plus Elmar 2.8/50 at F8.

To prevent his death, his mother Thetis took Achilles to the River Styx, which was supposed to offer powers of invulnerability, and dipped his body into the water; however, as Thetis held Achilles by the heel, his heel was not washed over by the water of the magical river. (Wikipedia)

The Achilles blue morpho (Morpho achilles) is one of the 29 accepted species and 147 subspecies under the genus Morpho.

This South American butterfly is also known as the blue-banded morpho, Achilles morpho, or banded blue morpho.

Matt black and broad blue bands distinguish this species from other morphos. The wingspan is 11 - 15 cm.

The Achilles blue morpho can be found over a huge range of countries, particularly in Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, and Venezuela.

This species is restricted to rainforest habitats at altitudes between 0 - 1000 m. Males patrol back and forth along rivers and streams, searching for females. They are most active in the mornings, and spend most of the afternoon visiting sap runs, feeding at rotting fruit or sitting motionless on foliage in the darkness of the forest. Females, which are recognisable by the wider dark borders on the uppersides, are seen far less frequently.

This picture was taken in the tropical butterfly house of the botanical garden of the Utrecht University in the Netherlands.

Achilles, the super hero of Homer's Iliad, does not really shine in Pat Barker's retelling of the story ("The Silence of the Girls"). She describes his complex psychology as amphibious and oscillating between feminine vulnerability and ultra-brutal tantrums of violence. He appears to be an overgrown baby and his needs are equally infantile. Even his appalling sex life is that of mummy's lost little boy, permanently searching for his mum, hence oedipal in nature. Time to grow up - for all the super heroes wasting humanity's time.

Achilles Last Stand

Led Zeppelin

Sending off a glancing kiss

To those who claim they know

Below the streets that steam and hiss

The devil's in his hole

Oh to sail away

To sandy lands and other days

Oh to touch the dream

Hides inside and never seen, yeah

Into the sun, the south, the north

At last the birds have flown

Shackles of commitments fell

In pieces on the ground

Oh, to ride the wind

To tread the air above the din

Oh, to laugh aloud

Dancing as we fought the crowd, yeah

To seek the man whose pointing hand

The giant step unfolds

To guide us from the curving path

That turns our feet to stone

If one bell should ring

In celebration for a king

So fast the heart should beat

As proud the head, with heavy feet, yeah

A shot from inside the cave at Cathedral Rock. First time shooting from in there.

The sky was non inspiring this morning, so I’ve intentionally blown the highlights to give the image a mysterious look.

Hope you like “Achilles Last Stand”
