St. Abb’s Head Lighthouse is one of the principal lights in Scotland and marks the southern entrance to the Firth of Forth. The lighthouse is now fully automated, with the status of the light being remotely monitored from the head quarters of the Northern Lighthouse Board, in Edinburgh.

The decision to build a lighthouse on St. Abb’s Head was taken in the aftermath of the sinking of the ship, "Martello" in 1857. It was felt, by the Board, that the construction of a lighthouse would greatly help navigation within the entrance to and approaches of the Firth of Forth. A lighthouse sighted on St. Abb’s Head would be visible before and after sight of the Bell Rock and Isle of May lights was lost.

Plans were prepared by the Engineers to the Board, Messrs David and Thomas Stevenson, and construction was commenced. Thus at dusk on Monday the 24th of February 1862, the oil-burning lamp was lit and for the first time the rays of the beacon shone out over the cold darkness of the North Sea

As the sun came up, I was hoping for a golden dawn. Sorry to say, it was not to be. I like the colours in the sky and the sun's reflection in the sea.

Popular hiking trails follow the coast north of the southeast Scottish village of St Abbs.

I headed up to St Abbs last night hoping to capture some Perseid Meteors as the weather forecast was clear until around 1am. When I arrived it was crystal clear but I could see a fog bank on the horizon which slowly moved toward me and within half an hour I was completely engulfed in fog. I was a bit disappointed I didn't get to see any meteors but I'm happy with what I came home with after such a long journey. What a difference 30 minutes can make to a shot!

St Abbs Harbour at St Abbs on Scotland's southeast coast is busy in summer with scuba diving, hikers, and fishing boats bringing in the catch.

The rocky southeast coast of Scotland is picturesque around St Abbs village.

A couple of things surprised me about this picture. One is that it is from 1988. Can it really have been that long ago? And look at how much traffic they had that day! This was on the former EL main line that the ABB took over to serve industry in Rittman, primarily the salt mine. Even then, they didn't serve the line every day but that is a good size train they took back to Barberton. Dec 16, 1988

Beautiful part of the Berwickshire coast, near the tiny village of St Abbs. Great for walking, sitting and looking at the view and enjoying the great outdoors. If youve never been to the area around North berwick, your missing out because it is a stunning part of the country. Areas like this for me are pure bliss.

Long exposure of 100 seconds taken a few months ago.

Had to process Raw twice and merge together to bring out detail in foreground as there was heavy shadows from the cliffs behind.

Still having awful weather here so have to dip into the archives again..

Gotta go but have a good weekend everyone

Bit of a seascape and urban shot mix here.

Finally got a decent sunset when I was out yesterday. Some images to follow but this was my last shot of the eve.

Whilst I was down in the bay I spotted the moon was rising on the horizon but by the time I had got up here the clouds had come in so annoyed I missed it but I like the lights and scene here.
