The Buddhist Council co-sponsored the celebration of the Buddha’s Birthday and Lotus Lantern Parade. It was held on Sunday May 2nd on the 14thStreet section of Union Square, starting at 1:30PM.

There was a variety of activities from different countries and traditions including the bathing of the Buddha, Dharma Painting Exhibition & Calligraphy Performance, Circling a Pagoda, Meditation practice, and 1080 prostrations. There was also be ethnic performances from 4 - 5 PM, Buddha's Birthday Ceremony from 5 - 6PM,and a lotus lantern parade from 14th. Street to Madison Square Park starting at 6:30PM.

It was a great opportunity for the different Buddhist traditions to come together to celebrate our teacher and our practice. It gave us an opportunity to interface with people outside of our communities so they can gain a better understanding of who we are. We are hopeful of getting Vesak recognized as a religious holiday in the city so it is helpful to have as many people as possible attending.
