Sunrise over the vineyards. Shot this morning outside the Salopian Inn, Mclaren Vale.
After hitting a roo and losing a headlight and part of my car's front end in the nearby hills the night before, I had slept in my car in a paddock near The Range, on Permangk country. At first light I slowly made my way down towards Mclaren Vale but realised it was probably still a bit dark to be driving with one headlight and part of my front panel flapping around. I pulled up opposite the Salopian Inn to wait for things to get a bit brighter.
After almost no sleep in a hot car and then even less when I wound the window down and the mozzies joined me, I was not really in the mood for taking photos. I just wanted to start my 270km drive home. The sunrise was just too beautiful though, so I got the camera out and clicked a few very quick shots. Probably should have set things up a bit better, taken my time over the settings and found a different composition but I really could not be bothered walking more than 5 metres from the car.
Sadly I am not sure the kangaroo would have survived. I did brake hard from the 80km/h I was traveling when it jumped out in front of me, but I still hit it pretty hard. By the time I stopped and gathered my senses it had somehow made its way into scrub on a steep slope off the road and disappeared into the deepening darkness. After dozens of near misses with kangaroos over the years I sadly couldn't avoid this one.
