After leaving Ferrari in 1961 Giotto Bizzarrini, who had aided the development and design of the 250 Ferrari series, including the famed GTO, was hired by Renzo Rivolta to develop a GT car. The initial concept resulted in the Corvette-engined Iso Rivolta, but Giotto had aspirations to make a competitive race car. The outcome was the striking A3C, which achieved immediate track success when launched in 1964. The near perfect weight distribution, sleek aerodynamics and powerful V8 ensured that it was a hugely competitive entrant including a second in class at the Nurburgring and 14th overall at Le Mans.
Produced in 1965, chassis number BA4 0106 is distinctive in that of all the race cars it is the only right-hand drive example produced by the factory. It first competed at the 1000kms of Monza in 1966 with Edgar Berney and Antonio Nieri where it did not finish the race due to a lack of wet weather tyres. Two weeks later it was competing in the Targa Florio where, after some enthusiastic driving, was doing well until a head gasket blew.
In 1966 Bizzarrini sent two cars to the 24 Heures du Mans. BA4 0106 was being driven well by Sam Posey and Massimo Natili until, after some hours, it was disqualified for crossing the ‘Pit Wall’ line two laps in a row. At the end of the1966 season, BA4 0106 was uprated with a 7 litre big block engine and returned to Le Mans in 1967 in a slightly different guise, with a front oil‐cooler and intricate bonnet scoop. After Bizzarrini’s bankruptcy in 1971, this ex Le Mans car was sold minus its engine, remaining mothballed for some 34 years.
As Chris Lackner, the Bizzarrini expert who has inspected the car, said “One wonders what this car, the last Le Mans Iso Bizzarrini to be discovered, can prove on the historic circuit, especially if fitted with the 7 litre big‐block torque‐monster!”
Passing into the hands of Dutch enthusiast David Hart in 2008, BA4 0106 has been raced with success in historic events with its most recent driver sharing with modern GT Audi superstar, Frank Stippler. BA4 0106 has been returned by Simon Blake of Historic Automobiles to wearing the same livery and specification as it ran at Le Mans in 1966.
Ex Johnny Hallyday
Johnny got his fun.
If you can buy any car, which one ? Young Johnny Hallyday replied, "Several !". Aged 22 he kept this Iso for almost six months ! Giotto Bizzarrini, who also changed jobs frequently, penned this exceptional car. He influenced design at Ferrari, ATS, Lamborghini and finally Iso. The A3C is an evolution of his Ferrari, the 250 GTO, with the Corvette engine pushed back under the windscreen - almost.

Engineer Giotto Bizzarrini is legendary for his early accomplishments as project engineer for three of the most important cardevelopments in Italian automotive history : the Ferrari 250 GTO, Lamborghini’s original 3500GT V-12 engine and Renzo Rivolta’s Iso Grifo. By 1964 those were in Bizzarrini’s past, and he opened his own company, “Prototipo Bizzarrini S.a.r.l., Progettazione e Construzioni Automobili,” in Livonia, well away from Italy’s automotive capitals of Modena and Bologna. There he began building extra-high performance versions of the Iso Grifo, but in limited numbers and with a different mission, for the A3C, as it was designated, was for racing. All told, Bizzarrini built 20 Iso Griffo A3/C coupes using lightweight riveted aluminum alloy bodies fabricated by Piero Drogo’s Carrozzeria Sports Auto. Interestingly, these Giugiaro-designed bodies used over 7.000 rivets ; although the practice was nothing new in a race car, other Italian designers heaped scorn on the very idea. Bizzarrini was unmoved; his new lightweight machine had a top speed of 168 MPH thanks to its slippery shape and the 327/365 HP Corvette engine inside.

The only one delivered wit a Targa Roof
After Spells at Alfa-Romeo and Ferrari, where he was the prime mover behind the legendary 250 GTO, Giotto Bizzarrini turned freelance in 1962, winning commissions from Lamborghini, for whom he designed their formidable V12, and from motorcycle company Iso, then returning to automobile manufacturing with the Rivolta.
A four-seater coupé, the Rivolta combined Bertone styling with Chevrolet V8 power and provided Bizzarrini with the basis for his next project, the Grifo. Convinced the car had competition potential, Bizzarrini finally obtained permission from Renzo Rivolta to manufacture the high-performance derivative under his own name. A road-going version, the Bizzarrini GT Strada 5300, was introduced in 1965.
The Strada retained the race car's lightweight aluminum bodywork and lowered suspension, but featured a higher level of interior trim. The '5300' title derived from the models 327ci (ca. 5.300 cc) Chevrolet Corvette V8 engine. The latter produced around 310 bhp with single Holley carburetor or 365 bhp when equipped wit a quartet of Webers, in either form endowing the lightweight aerodynamic coupé with stupendous performance. Not for nothing was the Bizzarrini reckoned, 'as fast as a Ferrari, but at half the price'.
Contemporary records indicate that 133 A3C and Strada models were built and al but 12 had all-alloy bodies. The chassis sequence began at '201', production continuing from 1964 to 1968. Only a handful of prototypes were produced after the Livorno factory ceased production in 1969, by which time 139 cars of all types had been built. This rare Bizzarrini GT Strada is the only one delivered new with a 'targa' roof. It is totally restored and presented today in a beautiful shade of blue.

Chassis B O216 was sold new in 1965 to an Italian customer of Bizzarrini as one of approximately 15 examples of the Iso A3/C aluminium riveted cars originally built with left hand drive steering. As a very early production example its features were very similar to the Le Mans Competition variants, namely riveted alloy body construction and side vents.
Originally delivered in the stunning and quite possibly unique period colour of ‘Mela Verde’ which later became more commonly known as ‘Miura Green’, which was discovered only recently during its comprehensive restoration when its black paintwork was stripped.
It is understood that at some stage in the late 1960s / early 1970s, this car was involved in an accident and was sent back to the factory where it was rebuilt and modified using some updated body and interior features inline with the standard 5300 GT Strada. The rivets were filled in, the body was painted black and it was given a new chassis number (noted as IA3 0283) and most likely re-sold as a new car.
The Iso remained in this configuration for many years later during restoration in 2003, at which time evidence of its’ beautiful and rare early features hidden underneath its skin were discovered.
According to UK Iso/Bizzarrini expert Chris Lackner, he was told the car was sold from Italy, on to Germany and then to the USA in 1978, brokered at that time by Fantasy Junction.
Mr Lackner notes ‘I first saw B 0216 at the Monterey classic car festivities in 1990. It was at that time black and had the appearance of a later Bizzarrini Strada, and in fact, for some unknown reason it was at that time known by chassis number IA3 0283.’
In 2003 the Iso arrived at the world renowned Ferrari and exotic car restoration shop of Chuck Wray and Kendall Merritt, son of noted Bizzarrini collector Dick Merritt. A thorough inspection was completed by Wray on the car and he soon discovered evidence for some rare early features including body rivets beginning to show underneath the shrinking paint and the very early chassis number stamping and it was at this time the car regained its rightful identity of B 0216.
At some point the appearance of the car has been returned to the way it would have looked as B 0216 – early-type dash layout, early wing vents (though more like the factory race cars than the style #216 would have had), early door handle design, visible rivets, etc.
In 2010 the Iso was the subject of a comprehensive body off restoration commissioned by current private owner and completed by one of the worlds leading marque restorers to beyond concours condition. Stripping of black paint revealed the amazing original colour throughout the body and in the door shuts.
All running gear, suspension, braking system and electrical system were completely restored to as new condition. The interior was completely re-trimmed in correct black leather and the restoration has been fully documented and is absolutely outstanding in every respect.
A full inspection was completed by UK leading Iso/Bizzarrini expert Chris Lackner who was very impressed with the car and confirmed both him and his colleague Jack Koobs de Hartog are in agreement the car is unquestionably B 0216.

The Alashan ground squirrel (Spermophilus alashanicus) is a species of rodent native to China and Mongolia. In Mongolia three other species of ground squirrels occur: the daurian ground squirrel (Spermophilus dauricus), the red-cheeked ground squirrel Spermophilus erythrogenys) and the long-tailed ground squirrel (Spermophilus undulatus). The scientific name of this genus Spermophilus means "seed-lovers".
GROUND SQUIRRELS
The ground squirrels are members of the squirrel family of rodents (Sciuridae) which generally live on or in the ground, rather than trees. Though capable of climbing, most species of ground squirrel live in open, treeless habitats. The term ground squirrel is most often used for the medium-sized ground squirrels, as the larger ones are more commonly known as marmots (genus Marmota) or prairie dogs (Cynomys), while the smaller and less bushy-tailed ground squirrels tend to be known as chipmunks. They are highly variable in size and habitus, but most are remarkably able to rise up on their hind legs and stand fully erect comfortably for prolonged periods. They also tend to be far more gregarious than other squirrels, and many live in colonies with complex social structures. The ground squirrel is especially renowned for its tendency to rise up on its hind legs. It does this whenever it senses nearby danger, or when it must see over tall grasses. The squirrel will then curl its paws flat against its chest and send a screeching call to warn other family members about the presence of predators. Ground squirrels may carry fleas that transmit diseases to humans (e.g. Black Death), and have been destructive in tunneling underneath human habitation.
DESCRIPTION
This species is typically brown or grey in color, with small pale spots on the back and a pale underside. The coat becomes lighter in summer, with the head and shoulders turning pale chestnut. Internal cheek pouches are used for carrying food. Its diet consists of herbs and other plants. The legs and tail are short, and it has a head-rump measurement of 22 to 23 cm. It is a diurnal species that hibernates. Most babies are born in June, with litter sizes ranging from 1 to 9.
DISTRIBUTION AND HABITAT
The Alashan ground squirrel has a rather restricted range across the Ala Shan Mountains of northwestern China and the Gobi Altai Mountains of southern Mongolia. In China the Alashan ground squirrel occurs in Gansu, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Qinghai, Shaanxi and Shanxi. In Mongolia, it occurs in the Ikh and Baga Bogd in Valley of the Lakes, and Gurvansaikhan and Öshög mountains in Gobi Altai Mountain Range.
The species inhabits steppe, mountain foothills, and alpine meadows, at elevations up to 3,200m asl. It is often associated with couch grasses, pea shrubs and false sedges, particularly Amygdalus pedunculata and Amygdalus polyrrhizum. This species is not found in areas with dense forest cover. In China, it can be found in desert habitat occupying dry sandy areas, as well as grasslands at the edge of the Gobi.
CONSERVATION ACTIONS
Population data for this species are currently unavailable. The trend is that the population is decreasing, but there are fro now no major threats to this species.
In Mongolia, this species is protected as Rare under the 2001 revision (Mongolian Government Act. No. 264) of the 2000 Law of the Mongolian Animal Kingdom, listed as Rare under the 1995 Mongolian Hunting Law (MNE 1996), and included as Rare in the 1997 Mongolian Red Book (MNE 1997). It was regionally Red Listed in Mongolia as Endangered under criterion A3c (Clark et al. 2006). Approximately 13% of the species’ range in Mongolia occurs within protected areas. However, no conservation measures specifically aimed at this species have been established to date. In China, there are no known conservation measures in place for this species. It occurs in Luoshan, Baijitan and Saihanwula Nature Reserves (CSIS 2008) and may be present in additional protected areas.

Giotto Bizzarrini’s exceptional career started at Alfa Romeo, but Ferrari is where he made his name, developing the 250 SWB, 250 TR and the legendary 250 GTO. Departing Ferrari as part of the infamous ‘Palace Revolt’ in 1961, he was soon involved with upstart ATS and later designed Lamborghini’s V-12.
Bizzarrini worked closely with Renzo Rivolta’s ambitious Iso effort starting in 1962 and later became a constructor of note. At 1963’s Turin Auto Show, Iso debuted the Grifo in two forms: the A3/L as a luxurious GT, and the A3/C as a serious endurance racer. The latter was developed and built by Bizzarrini; as he told author Winston Goodfellow, ‘I started with the idea of Ferrari’s 250 GTO, and wanted to improve on it.’ Iso Grifo A3/Cs won their class at Le Mans in 1964 and 1965, while the road-going A3 Stradale had a quoted top speed of 171 mph in Autosport magazine’s 1964 road test.
Offered here is one of these rare and very desirable ‘riveted’ A3/Cs, made by Carrozzeria Sports Cars of Piero Drogo in via Emilia Ovest in Modena, in front of the Autodromo di Modena. The bodies were made in ‘avional’ (duralumin), a special alloy of aluminium, copper and magnesium that is very light and elastic but very difficult to weld. Therefore, it needed to be riveted in a similar fashion to an airplane. This style of construction allowed the car to be exceptionally light, tipping the scales at 969 kg. Once the chassis and body were completed, Bizzarrini completed the cars at his small Autostar facility in Livorno.
The eighth of the 10 produced in 1964, Bizzarrini’s period correspondence with coachbuilder Piero Drogo summarized in Goodfellow’s book Bizzarrini: A Technician Devoted to Motor-Racing shows B 0209 under construction in September, with delivery to its first owner in France in November. It was finished in dark red over black leather seats.
It was sold to Paris resident Jean-Philippe Smet, who was better known as Johnny Hallyday. Dubbed ‘the Elvis Presley of France’ by The New York Times, Hallyday had 100-plus million record sales and appeared in more than 30 films, and was nothing short of a hero to many. Hallyday is pictured in and around the car, with Parisian temporary registration 7381 WW 75, in Paris, France, in late 1964/early 1965. On 27 October 1965, the car was registered as 4958 RZ 75, under ‘Mr Smet dit Johnny Hallyday, Jean Philippe, née le 15 juin 1943 à Paris 9è, et résident au 6 Place Winston Churchill, Neuilly sur Seine.’
After Hallyday’s ownership, B 0209 went to Jean Claude Guillaume in February 1966, and then the Grand Garage Moliere in November 1966 before settling into over two decades of ownership by Pierre Sangusko starting on 19 August 1968. According to the car’s current owner, Prince Pierre Sangusko stored the Iso in his castle for 24 years. During this period the car was refinished in white, with a central blue stripe. When he died, Daniel Marin, President of Ferrari France Pozzi, who was a very close friend of Pierre Sangusko, sold the Iso to Michel Hommell on 13 April 1992. He got the car re-sprayed in ‘Ferrari Red’ and displayed the car in his museum, Manoire de l’Automobile in Loéhac, Brittany, France. At that time the car was displayed with the number plate 728 GFS 75, even though it has never been registered with this number.
In 2009, Hommell sold B 0209 to Yvan Mahe, the owner of Equipe Europe. Before the sale, as per French regulation, a Contrôle Technique (equivalent to the UK MoT, and German TÜV) was performed on 21 February 2009, and at that time the car displayed only 25,484 km, believed to be original. It was then registered 214 EYC 77. Still retaining its original interior, it was bought by Pascal Perrier in 2012 before its acquisition by the current owner in 2014. At the 2017 Chantilly Concours, it was exhibited in the Great Musicians’ Cars class, where it garnered the ‘Special Award.’
Today, these early ‘riveted’ Iso Grifo A3/Cs are highly coveted as only a handful did actually survive and seldom come to market. Chassis number B 0209 is especially appealing as it has always been in France, with unbroken provenance back to the first owner, one of France’s most beloved figures.

- Giotto Bizzarrini built 20 Iso Grifo A3C race cars with the rare Drogo riveted alloy body
- Lightweight aluminum Drogo riveted body designed and built by Carrozzeria Sport Cars Modena

In 1961, Ferrari fired Giotto Bizzarrini, father of the GTO. He worked at Lamborghini continuing his research on front-engined grand touring cars. Rivolta gave him the money to fulfil his dream. His Corvette-powered mid-front-engined A3C was a very well-balanced, efficient car on road and track.
