This car took part in the Coys of Kensington GT Race at the Coys International Historic Festival meeting at Silverstone in July 1995. It's the 1965 Bizzarrini Corsa of Paul Koppenwallner which the programme of the event says has a 5,400cc engine - most of these cars use the Chevrolet Corvette 327 cu in V8 unit which equates to 5,358cc. The car was designed by Giotto Bizzarrini for Renzo Rivolta as a successor to the Iso Rivolta IR 300, but when Bizzarrini split from Iso Rivolta he started his own company and the Iso A3C formed the basis of the Bizzarrini 5300 Corsa.

Giotto Bizzarrini’s exceptional career started at Alfa Romeo, but Ferrari is where he made his name, developing the 250 SWB, 250 TR and the legendary 250 GTO. Departing Ferrari as part of the infamous ‘Palace Revolt’ in 1961, he was soon involved with upstart ATS and later designed Lamborghini’s V-12.
Bizzarrini worked closely with Renzo Rivolta’s ambitious Iso effort starting in 1962 and later became a constructor of note. At 1963’s Turin Auto Show, Iso debuted the Grifo in two forms: the A3/L as a luxurious GT, and the A3/C as a serious endurance racer. The latter was developed and built by Bizzarrini; as he told author Winston Goodfellow, ‘I started with the idea of Ferrari’s 250 GTO, and wanted to improve on it.’ Iso Grifo A3/Cs won their class at Le Mans in 1964 and 1965, while the road-going A3 Stradale had a quoted top speed of 171 mph in Autosport magazine’s 1964 road test.
Offered here is one of these rare and very desirable ‘riveted’ A3/Cs, made by Carrozzeria Sports Cars of Piero Drogo in via Emilia Ovest in Modena, in front of the Autodromo di Modena. The bodies were made in ‘avional’ (duralumin), a special alloy of aluminium, copper and magnesium that is very light and elastic but very difficult to weld. Therefore, it needed to be riveted in a similar fashion to an airplane. This style of construction allowed the car to be exceptionally light, tipping the scales at 969 kg. Once the chassis and body were completed, Bizzarrini completed the cars at his small Autostar facility in Livorno.
The eighth of the 10 produced in 1964, Bizzarrini’s period correspondence with coachbuilder Piero Drogo summarized in Goodfellow’s book Bizzarrini: A Technician Devoted to Motor-Racing shows B 0209 under construction in September, with delivery to its first owner in France in November. It was finished in dark red over black leather seats.
It was sold to Paris resident Jean-Philippe Smet, who was better known as Johnny Hallyday. Dubbed ‘the Elvis Presley of France’ by The New York Times, Hallyday had 100-plus million record sales and appeared in more than 30 films, and was nothing short of a hero to many. Hallyday is pictured in and around the car, with Parisian temporary registration 7381 WW 75, in Paris, France, in late 1964/early 1965. On 27 October 1965, the car was registered as 4958 RZ 75, under ‘Mr Smet dit Johnny Hallyday, Jean Philippe, née le 15 juin 1943 à Paris 9è, et résident au 6 Place Winston Churchill, Neuilly sur Seine.’
After Hallyday’s ownership, B 0209 went to Jean Claude Guillaume in February 1966, and then the Grand Garage Moliere in November 1966 before settling into over two decades of ownership by Pierre Sangusko starting on 19 August 1968. According to the car’s current owner, Prince Pierre Sangusko stored the Iso in his castle for 24 years. During this period the car was refinished in white, with a central blue stripe. When he died, Daniel Marin, President of Ferrari France Pozzi, who was a very close friend of Pierre Sangusko, sold the Iso to Michel Hommell on 13 April 1992. He got the car re-sprayed in ‘Ferrari Red’ and displayed the car in his museum, Manoire de l’Automobile in Loéhac, Brittany, France. At that time the car was displayed with the number plate 728 GFS 75, even though it has never been registered with this number.
In 2009, Hommell sold B 0209 to Yvan Mahe, the owner of Equipe Europe. Before the sale, as per French regulation, a Contrôle Technique (equivalent to the UK MoT, and German TÜV) was performed on 21 February 2009, and at that time the car displayed only 25,484 km, believed to be original. It was then registered 214 EYC 77. Still retaining its original interior, it was bought by Pascal Perrier in 2012 before its acquisition by the current owner in 2014. At the 2017 Chantilly Concours, it was exhibited in the Great Musicians’ Cars class, where it garnered the ‘Special Award.’
Today, these early ‘riveted’ Iso Grifo A3/Cs are highly coveted as only a handful did actually survive and seldom come to market. Chassis number B 0209 is especially appealing as it has always been in France, with unbroken provenance back to the first owner, one of France’s most beloved figures.

Bizzarrini himself
Due to the complicated deal with ISO, Bizzarrini left the factory. In 1964 Societa Autostar became Societa Prototipi Bizzarrini. Then Bizzarrini produced the Grifo A3C under his name. Bizzarrini's A3C version was a street legal race car. These units were called the Bizzarrini 5300 GT America or Bizzarrini 5300 GT Strada. The body shape and mechanical parts were the same as Iso A3C's.
The Livorno factory produced around 140 cars. In 1966 Bizzarrini S.p.A was founded continuing until 1969. Some more cars were built from parts or as one-offs. Three of these 5300's were bodied as spyder/targa versions. The Bizzarrini 5300 SI Spyder has a beautiful body and was penned by Style Italia workshops. All of these cars still survive.
Bizzarrini 1900 GT Europa
Bizzarrini also managed a scaled-down 5300 GT project. Designed for GM-Opel, it was based on Opel 1900 platform. Bizzarrini's proposal was more aggressive and good looking. It was a baby-looking 5300 GT. The production Opel GT was designed by factory stylists and was less aggressive but still beautiful. Bizzarrini then decided to build the car himself. Around 17 prototypes were completed. The car is officially named as the Bizzarrini 1900 GT Europa. One of these cars has a barchetta body. Some cars are powered by 1300 and 1600 four cylinder engines sourced from GM, Alfa Romeo and FIAT. There is even a highly developed racing version with SPICA fuel injection system.

After leaving Ferrari in 1961 Giotto Bizzarrini, who had aided the development and design of the 250 Ferrari series, including the famed GTO, was hired by Renzo Rivolta to develop a GT car. The initial concept resulted in the Corvette-engined Iso Rivolta, but Giotto had aspirations to make a competitive race car. The outcome was the striking A3C, which achieved immediate track success when launched in 1964. The near perfect weight distribution, sleek aerodynamics and powerful V8 ensured that it was a hugely competitive entrant including a second in class at the Nurburgring and 14th overall at Le Mans.
Produced in 1965, chassis number BA4 0106 is distinctive in that of all the race cars it is the only right-hand drive example produced by the factory. It first competed at the 1000kms of Monza in 1966 with Edgar Berney and Antonio Nieri where it did not finish the race due to a lack of wet weather tyres. Two weeks later it was competing in the Targa Florio where, after some enthusiastic driving, was doing well until a head gasket blew.
In 1966 Bizzarrini sent two cars to the 24 Heures du Mans. BA4 0106 was being driven well by Sam Posey and Massimo Natili until, after some hours, it was disqualified for crossing the ‘Pit Wall’ line two laps in a row. At the end of the1966 season, BA4 0106 was uprated with a 7 litre big block engine and returned to Le Mans in 1967 in a slightly different guise, with a front oil‐cooler and intricate bonnet scoop. After Bizzarrini’s bankruptcy in 1971, this ex Le Mans car was sold minus its engine, remaining mothballed for some 34 years.
As Chris Lackner, the Bizzarrini expert who has inspected the car, said “One wonders what this car, the last Le Mans Iso Bizzarrini to be discovered, can prove on the historic circuit, especially if fitted with the 7 litre big‐block torque‐monster!”
Passing into the hands of Dutch enthusiast David Hart in 2008, BA4 0106 has been raced with success in historic events with its most recent driver sharing with modern GT Audi superstar, Frank Stippler. BA4 0106 has been returned by Simon Blake of Historic Automobiles to wearing the same livery and specification as it ran at Le Mans in 1966.

Giotto Bizzarini had worked with Alfa Romeo and Ferrari on development of new models. Forming his own company, Autostar, in 1962 he worked with Renzo Rivolta producing the Iso Rivolta and the Iso Grifo A3C models. The company was renamed Prototipi Bizzarini and went on to produce several models, including the 5300 Corsa. Due to the complicated deal with Iso, Bizzarrini left in 1964 and founded Societa Prototipi Bizzarrini (Bizzarrini S.p. A), which produced some 140 cars through 1969 at its Livorno factory.
The 5300 Corsa shares the Iso Grifo A3C body a chassis powered by a 327 Corvette V8 and is badged as a Bizzarini.
The bodies were styled by Giugiaro at Bertone in collaboration with Renzo Rivolta. Bizzarini was keen to take the car racing and by 1963 had convinced Rivolta to finance the racing programme. The result was a sportier version of the Grifo produced in two forms of trim, the luxury version dubbed A3L the sports version A3c (Competition) Entered for the 1964 Sebring 12 hour and Le Mans 24 hour were it would go on to capture fourth overall and first in class. Around 22 A3C were constructed but due to disagreements Rivolta and Bizzarini parted company in 1965.
A deal was struck allowing Bizzarini to continue production but without the use of its name, the new name was to be the Bizzarini 5300GT of which around 50 further cars were produced, The cars are almost identical but with small design details changed by Carrozzeria BBM such as the door handles, and front and rear signals and lights

Techno Classica Essen 2018 - #B-0219 sometimes is said to be the Bizzarrini 7 litri built by Neri e Bonacini ("Nembo") in 1967, basing on a 5300 GT Strada. That one looked slightly different than the car shown above, which was delivered without engine in 1966. In 1969 this ISO already was registered with a 5.3 litre engine.

After leaving Lamborghini, Bizzarrini was offered an opportunity by Renzo Rivolta, the owner of Iso, where he created the Iso Rivolta and the Grifo A3 models. The A3C was a GT race car powered by a Chevrolet Corvette engine that had been placed in the front but pushed back to take advantage of weight distribution. The car proved itself at the grueling 24 Hours of LeMans in 1964 where it emerged with a class victory.
By mid-1965, after thirty examples had been produced, the relationship began to disintegrated. Bizzarrini had placed his emblem on almost all of the A3/C models, rather than using Iso emblems. To make matters worse, Bizzarrini had trademarked the Grifo name. Bizzarrini had tried to increase the racing department's budget but was refused by Rivolta. Rivolta was disgruntled since Iso had provided funding to market and race the A3C's. The two companies decided to split, with Iso acquiring the rights to the Grifo name and Bizzarrini obtaining sole rights to build the A3/C and components and parts to construct a limited number of examples.
The A3/C was given a new name, the Bizzarrini 5300 GT. The vehicle was available in either Strada or Corsa trim, with the Strada being the more popular choice out of the two. The 5300 GT was basically the same as the A3/C. It retained the same chassis and under the hood lurked either a 365 hp or 405 hp engine, depending on the body-style. The main differences were cosmetic; the 5300 GT had aluminum bodywork by Carrozzeria BBM rather than using Drogo's Sports Cars of Modena. A bumper strip adorned the front of the vehicle and a few other aesthetic changes followed. There were no door handles; instead, there were push-button releases.
Three examples, all uniquely designed and created, were outfitted with Spyder bodies, one making its way to the 1966 Geneva Motorshow. The bodies were created of alloy and developed at Turin's Stile Italia under the supervision of Bizzarrini.
