Our kitchen heater in visible light, glowing a cheery red in the night. (We turned the heater up last night due to the forecast low temperatures - it got down to -16.8C). The heater glows even brighter in infrared...

Heater, the Dayton Dragon's mascot, came to visit us at school! While here, Heater got a check up and some x-rays done!

This mattress lasted 12 years, which, in my experience, is longer than usual. Astonishingly, I bought this one at Wal-Mart. It lasted longer than any premium mattress ever did.

A Barler's No. 3 kerosene heater. When I found this in a Florence antique store, it was covered with a thin layer of oily grime. I rubbed the tank with my finger and discovered it was brass. It had absolutely no visible dings or scratches. When I got it home and started cleaning it up, found that it apparently has never been used. The burner and wick are like new, no soot or other signs of having been lit, except for a very small fringe of black around the edge of the wick, like it might have been "test fired" for about 30 seconds to burn off any loose strings when a new wick is installed. There is a heat baffle inside the combustion chamber, about four inches below the top grill, and it had no soot at all on the bottom, which it surely would have if the heater had been used at all.

Found a magazine ad that dates it to circa 1905. Polished the tank/burner and painted the parts with hi-temp automotive engine and manifold paint. I've had it several years and can't decide whether I want to fire it up or not.

Update: December, 2010. I still haven't fired it up, and, tempting as it it is, I don't think I will. As old as it is, it's just in too pristine a condition to smoke up now. I forgot to mention before, I painted the "silver" parts with "chrome" automotive engine block paint, EXCEPT for the Barler's Company logo, which appears to be solid nickel, or very heavily nickel-plated. It polished up very nicely.

Experimental Crystal Heater Contraption.

I read something about this on the web and decided to have a go.

The only part I had to buy (Ebay) was the thermistor, everything else came from my junk box, even the transistors have been recycled from redundant equipment.

You set the temperature with the pot, and the thermistor provides "backing off" to the darlington stage to keep everything in equilibrium.

I had a lot of fun messing about with this, and it works a treat.

It was easy to verify that the temperature control produced a noticeable improvement in the frequency of a test oscillator connected to the heated crystal.

I have this idea of incorporating this idea into a QRSS MEPT, though it will have to be "repackaged" of course!

Our house has asphalt to the foundation and under part of the asphalt is a road heater. The actual heating unit is in the garage. We have never used it although it would have been helpful some winters to melt some of the accumulated snow...

The house has these little niche spaces underneath the windows where heaters were installed previously, which helped make some room on the walls, but made for very inefficient heating. We had some insulation put in and new, flatter heaters installed.

I visited my 78 year old friend Al who lives in the next town over. He

has been using the solar hot box we built as renewable energy group

project for the last two days. Today was of particular interest to me

because our temperatures were between 25F - 55F. We found the solar

box to be cranking out a comfortable amount of warm air this morning.

Temperatures were between 100F - 140F depending where we measured. The

two mistakes we made on this projects were:

- not allowing the system to off gas before connecting to the house

- the use of blueboard (foam) it is melting in the heater and probably

not necessary

This is the emblem on an old water heater in a abandoned house in Pollardville, Ca.

Pollardville was assembled in 1957 by Ray B. Pollard and family as a turist attraction. Pollardville is a fake ghost town. All of the buildings at Pollardville are either made from original antique architectural details or are original buildings themselves from the 1800's, moved here from Jamestown, Mountain Ranch, Lodi, Chinese Camp and Jackson, California.

Sadly Pollardville has been sold to a developer who is going to flatten the place to build homes, (Like California needs more houses!) and a strip mall. Most of the buildings have been sold to different people, who are moving them to their land to be restored. The last day of business was April 1, 2007.

Freshly made siphon coffee on the Hario Beam Heater. I'm being bad, running this Japanese 100V device on a 110V plug, but since it is a glorified light dimmer switch, I just refrain from running it at 100%.

This picture proves to be a constant reminder that you don't always need a DSLR for a good shot. Captured by my Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (SM-N900), it is a close up of the filament of my space heater. Though greatly underexposed, it makes for an interesting composition.

The heaters on 659 were an eye sore on the bus and heavily corroded, without help they would easily go beyond repair in a few more years. The units were removed from the bus in 2010 but were side lined when the chassis and axle work began. Now with the bus out for the summer time was found to restore the units. Sadly we were unable to save the heater matrix on both units due to corrosion, they were not leaking but the veins on them simply crumbled away. New units were made locally and installed hopefully they will provide maximum heat on cold days. I always remember these buses had great heaters, notice the front fan unit on the heater unit closest to the camera is solely pumping hit air into the drivers cab, the vent comes out right at the bottom of the seat back blasting hot air at the drivers rear end!...

This is a check valve, allowing air trapped in the mattress to escape, but preventing the flow of water. Waterbeds need to be burped every so often, as gases build up, making the mattress noisy with any movement.

I snagged the heater fan and heater core from the parts car. I sure hope I don't have to use them as you need to disassemble a good portion of the dash to get to it.
