CSX loaded coal train N247-23 has a good roll on it as they pass through the small town of Atmore, Alabama, as the leftovers of a dramatic day after Christmas sunset decorate the eastern sky. The loaded coal originated west of Birmingham on the mineral subdivision at Warrior Met Coal's Blue Creek Mine Number 4; and is bound for the docks at Mobile where the coal will be exported to South America for use in their steel industry. The Mobile coal trains are a virtual conveyor belt of black diamonds headed south to the port and are a bright spot in the coal market. 14 million short tons of coal rolled out over CSX to Mobile in 2019 and Mobile ranks as the third-largest export market in the United States for export coal. They have been one of the most steadily running coal markets of this decade. Even as this is typed there are two more loads making their way south and an equal number of empties readying to head back to the mines for more coal.

le père Noël est passé avant l'heure. J'en ai profité pour faire un tour à la plage; Cet appareil photo est une petite merveille. J'ai hâte de le tester à l'affût. Avantage non négligeable : le silence total de son fonctionnement.

UP 4014, The Big Boy, flies south through Grosse Tete, Louisiana. The worlds largest operating steam locomotive was flying south down the Livonia subdivision towards their weekend stop in New Orleans. This was an impressive place to watch this massive steam engine fly by at track speed. Union Pacific 4014 was built in 1941 for the Union Pacific railroad in the height of World War Two. It is the only operating example of the monstrous alco steamer still around.

Photos taken over the last few weeks on the Jersey Shore and Outer Banks.

It's very early on a rainy summer morning in Green Mountain, North Carolina, and we are alongside the former Clinchfield Railroad mainline of CSX Transportation. The roar of the parallel Toe river all but drowns out approaching CSX freight M693. A little haze still hangs in the air, and soon soft summer rain will begin. This section of railroad is one of my favorites in the world. The CSX Blue Ridge subdivision lazily winds its way through its namesake mountain range towards Spartanburg, SC, some many miles south. Many miles of harsh grades out of Erwin, TN, had the heavy 693 crawling all the way into Poplar siding a few miles back, and they'll be grinding south again in a few near Toecane. Ahead lies the Blue Ridge summit, and the famous Clinchfield Loops. For now, 693 is just rolling along the Toe River, and through the Idyllic countryside that surrounds the Clinchfield in the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Thanks for looking and enjoy!
