7 fascinating facts about The King Cobra, in Hong Kong.

 Pictures by Jack Ferguson.

Daily blog at www.wildcreatureshongkong.org

The longest venemous snake in the world is also a Hong Kong resident. But don't worry, it only eats other snakes, with occasional snacks of lizards or small mammals, and there have been no recorded fatalities from this snake to date in Hong Kong.

7 interesting facts:

1. A fear of snakes is known as ophidiophobia - and if you have it, you are not alone, as it is one of the most common fears in the world.

2. this snake is venomous, not poisonous. When an animal is poisonous, this means that the animal can be harmful when eaten or touched, in contrast to venomous, when the animal actually delivers the poison, as through a bite.

3. It is the longest venomous snake in the world. The longest captive snake grew to 5.7 meters! In Hong Kong in the wild they are more around 2-3 meters, with some exceptions.

4. This snake eats mainly other snakes! The scientific name of the king cobra is Ophiophagus hannah, from the Greek ophio “snake” and phagus “to eat”.

5. The female king cobra is the only snake that cares for its eggs. After laying twenty to fifty eggs in a nest made of twigs and leaves she covers the eggs and rests on top, guarding the eggs until they hatch, which can take up to 90 days.

6. Rare among snakes, this snake has excellent vision.

7. This animal is listed in the Protection of Endangered Species of Animals and Plants Ordinance in Hong Kong.

The Daily Courier

Myles Mattila didn’t have to

choose between higher

education and high-calibre

hockey.

“I knew I wanted to get a business degree,

but I still wanted to play at the highest level

of hockey I could,” said the 18-year-old.

“I’m lucky I’m able to do

both with the perfect fit

I have with Okanagan

College and the Kelowna

Chiefs. College is flexible

and the Chiefs encourage

players to attend school.”

The college offers Mattila

a schedule of morning and

evening classes, so he can

practice midday with the

Kootenay International

Junior Hockey League

team.

And most games are on

weekends, so they don’t

interfere with school, either.

“It’s a healthy balance,”

said Mattila.

“I want to play hockey,

but I also want to get the

education that will lead

me to become a lawyer.”

Mattila is making it

work with aplomb.

The five-foot-10-inch,

180-pound right winger has

seven goals and 12 assists

in the 27 games he’s played

with the Chiefs so far this

season.

He’s also doing well at college.

While this is admirable, it’s really

Mattila’s volunteer work in the

mental-health realm that earned him

the Top Forty Under 40 nomination.

While playing his final season of major

midget with the Cariboo Cougars in

Prince George, he started the

MindRight.info website.

“I haven’t suffered myself with mental

illness,” said Mattila.

“But, I know mental illness doesn’t

discriminate. I’ve seen friends and fellow

hockey players suffer with depression.”

While the website was designed to help

local hockey players access information

about mental health and how to seek help,

it is also a resource for the

wider community.

“There’s definitely a

stigma to mental illness,

especially in sports and

hockey because the guys

are supposed to be big and

tough and not show

weakness and not share

their emotions,” said

Mattila.

“Mind Right lets people

know they are not alone

and it’s OK to get help.”

The website caught the

attention of B.C. Hockey,

which bestowed its

President’s Award on

Mattila and is

recommending

MindRight.info be

provided to all minorhockey

players in the

province.

Prime Minister Justin

Trudeau gave Mittila

Twitter nod when he

heard of his advocacy.

The volunteerism also

helped Mattila qualify for

one of only four Trevor

Linden Scholarships awarded each year to

students in B.C.

“I think it may have been Lana Quinn

(who works with former hockey star

Linden in the Vancouver Canucks

organization) who nominated me for the Top 40 under 40 - Kelowna

Of all the English radio stations, my favorite had to have been this XFM station.

Now I don't know how it works, becuase we got XFM in both London and Liverpool (maybe the cars are set up so that the station stays but the frequency changes?) but it was entertaining. It had some great music -- both American and oldy British -- as well as some humerous talk radio.

Just before I took this photo (I will not answer whether I was driving or not while I shot this...) the DJ was talking about a funny thing to add to the end of song titles to make them funny.

"In my pants."

"Just add 'in my pants' to the end of any song title and it'll be hilarious. Message me your best and we'll put a few on the air."

My favorite of his was "Champagne Supernova, in my pants" hahaha

Sonia and I made up a few of our own --

They just played Spice Girls so she decided to say, "Spice Up Your Life, in my pants."

My favorite of mine were, "Stairway to Heaven, in my pants" and "Welcome to the Jungle, in my pants."

:D

And England, for whatever reason, is obsessed with Michael Jackson. I realized that any of his songs work too -- "Thriller, in my pants" "Beat It, in my pants" "Billie Jean, in my pants." "You Are Not Alone, in my pants" "Don't Stop 'Til You Get Enough, in my pants." All of his hits work :P

So I looked for the theatre that was farthest south, and it ended being in Surrey, which apparently is known for being pretty ghetto *shrug*.

It was kinda convenient though cause we knew we were within 10 minutes and so we went looking for coffee and breakfast. As we were sitting there drinking our coffee we looked out the window and Voila, the theatre was across the street, lol.

So first of all, there was a whole 10 people in the theatre, lol. I guess all the fans went to the first showing on Wednesday with the cosplay contest, hehe. And it was a full-size theatre too! So it was pretty sweet, like we had it all to ourselves. :)

(Although for the record, I have found I really love those packed-like-sardines theatre showings opening night, so I kinda missed it... you can feel the anticipation and you have all these people who love the movie, and they're so excited and cheering throughout the movie and stuff. Well, as long as I get there early enough for a good seat. :p )

You Are Not Alone

YANA-(you are not alone) is a new organization for people who feel alone.

Founder and CEO Wayne A. Grover was in my town recently. He stopped me and a friend with two other men to talk to us about his purpose. one man had a camera and the other had a microphone. Wayne was carrying pink and green hats that had the YANA symbol on the front. He handed me and my friend one each. He discussed with us the importance of knowing someones there. He then asked us who we would reach out to. I said my sister Melynie because shes a young mother and I feel like sometimes she feels alone. We talked for a while longer then the camera man took our picture.

for more information on YANA heres his website: www.yanacares.com/

I'm part of the content and storytelling team that produces engaging, inspiring, heartwarming, brand-building, educational features (the list can go on!) for Hockey Night in Canada, Hometown Hockey and other shows and platforms on Sportsnet. I build relationships and sit one-on-one with professional athletes, their families, friends, fans, executives and even politicians (see cover photo ⬆️). I turn interviews and high-caliber visuals into a story -- engaging our viewers, attracting new ones and thus growing the company's brand and sports properties.

My desire to learn about the world and educate others has always been important to me and led me to start my career as a teacher after graduating from McGill with a B.Ed. After developing a unit for my students in which they wrote, produced, shot and edited their own news stories based on our current events discussions, I decided I wanted to try it myself! Enter: Broadcast Journalism at BCIT. I graduated with distinction in 2009 and went on to produce features and documentaries for networks including Discovery Channel and CBC.. During that time, I also worked on-air as a sports host for CBC Vancouver for almost 6 years before moving to Toronto from Vancouver in 2014.

I thrive on experiences, and it's always been important to me that I educate and help people, companies and organizations grow. As a journalism student, I interned with the BBC World Service in London where my first phone call on Day 1 was to a civilian in Afghanistan. Early on in my TV production days, I developed an internship program for journalism students and in 2013 volunteered for a month teaching communications and visual content strategies to staff a children's hospital in Cambodia. The content they produced brought in donations instantly.

When I'm not working, you'll find me exploring the outdoors (I grew up in Vancouver, after all), visiting my family in B.C., discovering a new country or scuba diving in search of big fish (ie. sharks).

What is ‘DTIYS’ and why?

Have any of you heard of the term “Draw This In Your Style?”

A lot of artists have been picking up on this concept over the past few years and it leaves some who aren’t involved in it asking “What is it?” and “But what is the point?”

I think it is simple to say that every artist in the world has had another artist they have been fond of either for their art style, color choices, concepts/layout, or just the way that they draw certain things in a portrait. This alone stems fans to either create ‘fanart’ or mimic what they see so they can learn to improve their own art skills.

Because social media is so powerful, artists are using this to their advantage to promote themselves as well as inviting the artist community to get involved. The rules are quite basic where the ‘host’ artist draws an original character and challenges ‘fan’ artists to draw the same character, but, the catch is, for that fan artist to use their own style to draw the host artist’s original character, which results in creating what is called a ‘collaboration’. A lot of times, these collaborations end up resulting in the ‘fan’ being recognized by the host artist and it can create an opportunity for them to work on art together again in the future, if they make a good enough impression.

If you have an artist that is your mentor, sometimes fanart is the best way to gesture that you like what they are doing more than colorful language. *Whisper* Just don’t forget to give credit where it is due.
