It was great to see my old friend Mooger in Brevard. Normally the nose picking advice is sound, but when you have hoofs instead of fingers you really can't pick your nose.

The outpouring of love and support from you for our loss of Jasmine yesterday has been overwhelming. I can't thank you enough.

You know, the ones where you just know you are gonna nail it. The ones where you have your idea all planned out. The ones where you know that if you can just get that right shot, you and the donkey are gonna get along just smashing...

Yeah? You have? Well, today was not one of those for me. FUCK! I am not sure if sometimes I just get over confident, or if I'm just not as good as I think I can be...but fuck it if today wasn't one of those shitty photo days. My original idea was to involve those big ol' giant cowboy boots again...you know, the ones I humped awhile back? Well, it just didn't come together. Lighting sucked, placement sucked, cars everywhere....baaaaahhhh!!!!

So here you are FGR, a VERY Forced Perspective. I kept trying to take a picture of myself and some asshole kept sticking his hand in the frame and crushing my ego...

I guess it fits right into Jordy's group "30 days of rants and raves"...so at least that worked out.

This vegetarian bento is for Saba Man's co-worker who did a huge favor for us. The box is a new one that I bought special for this gift.

Don't have to be so guarded

Let's finish what we started

It's all I ever wanted

Tru2U empowers young girls to face challenges of adolescence

By Joyce Coronel | May 21, 2009 | The Catholic Sun

Decked out in pale pink T-shirts emblazoned with the Tru2U logo, 42 eighth-grade girls from St. Thomas the Apostle listened to Amy Aker tell them how she found her prince.

You could have heard a pin drop.

Aker, an attractive young mother of three, went on to describe how she learned that only God could fulfill all of her needs and be the man of her dreams.

Parents have long worried about the “boy crazy” phase girls go through in the formative years of adolescence. A group of moms from St. Thomas the Apostle Catholic School got together and came up with a way to reach and empower young ladies with a message of faith and purity.

Laura Westfall, a nurse practitioner and mother of an eighth-grade daughter, often sees young female patients who must deal with the unanticipated consequences of poor decision-making.

It was while she was on a sunrise hike and reflecting on her daughter’s upcoming graduation that the idea of a retreat for girls came to her. She turned to six other moms at the school who in a short amount of time were able to organize the retreat, held at Mount Claret May 7.

The day began at 6 a.m. with a team-building activity involving ropes and an obstacle course. Then the girls were off to hear a slate of speakers their mothers had arranged.

They learned about the role nutrition plays from fitness expert Tricia Leach who counseled them to make wise choices about food, but most of all, to know who they were before God.

After asking the girls to rate themselves as daughters and students on a scale from 1 to 10, she surprised them by letting them know that no matter how they saw themselves, God considers each one of them to be a “perfect 10.”

Rose

You love the roses - so do I. I wish

The sky would rain down roses, as they rain

From off the shaken bush. Why will it not?

Then all the valley would be pink and white

And soft to tread on. They would fall as light

As feathers, smelling sweet; and it would be

Like sleeping and like waking, all at once!

Why should pigeons be the only ones spreading poop all over Times Square.

I lost my job with the City of New York apparently due to a budget crisis. People from all over the country have come to occupy wall street putting a 3 million dollar overtime paycheck into cops pockets.

This Sunday 50,000 plus idiots will be occupying the Verrazano-Narrows bridge to run the New York City Marathon. How much money does the city make on that? If you include the cost of the toll on that bridge?

»You & Me« from the Scrappies series - cast in 925 Sterling silver.

The body parts of the Scrappies are inspired by everything that can be found in a scrapyard: Old bolts and nuts, rusty coils, pipes, parts of ball bearings, tin cans, and more.

The figurines are cast in minute detail, including "rust holes" and traces of an alleged "welding". The scrap metal look gives the characters their own special, irresistible charm.

Each of the pendants is individually and uniquely created in a complex, novel manufacturing process:

It all begins with a digital 3D design which is then used to build a wax model. The wax model is created layer by layer on a special 3D wax printer. The wax model is used to produce a negative, heat-resistant shell around the wax.

Heat is applied to the outer shell such that the wax melts out and leaves room for liquid silver to be poured in. Finally, the shell has to be destroyed to take the finished object out.

Just when you think that you have seen it all

In Georgia there is a name that everyone recognizes. In the SEC that name is known as well.

The mascot for the school is a bulldog, named UGA. I know folks who own bulldogs with the pedigree framed and on the wall. There is a family tree included to prove their dog is a direct descendant of first UGA.

My friend in Gainesville, GA owns an office supply store that specializes in the liquidation of office products for companies that close their businesses. I never know what will be on display and for sale when I stop by. I remember one day when I walked in and they had an exact replica of a human skeleton for sale after cleaning out a chiropractor's office. But, that is another story.

Yesterday they had a male and female pair of English Bulldogs dressed as cheerleaders. They were complete with the UGA logos. In this part of the world, they will be sold very quickly.

I haven't done one of my banknote tests for a while!

I hired the new Sony FE 300mm F2.8 GM OSS lens, 2x Teleconverter (bought that new as you can't rent them|) and A7R V body this weekend to see if it could be a possible alternative to my trusty Canon gear for bird photography. My main criteria being that the Sony set-up would need to be lightweight - and even more importantly able to capture a similar amount of detail. I thought it might be useful to 'publish' my findings for anyone else looking to do the same thing.

In summary the Sony gear resolved MORE detail than the Canon at 600mm (I didn't quite believe the results so have repeated several time over 2 days and they are consistently the same). Adding a 1.4 teleconverter to the Canon then allows it to resolve slightly more detail than the Sony at 840mm.

The Sony 300 2.8 is the sharpest lens I have ever tested. I have used the Canon lens extensively and know that my copy is extremely sharp.

WEIGHT

Canon R5 0.738 Kg with 1 battery

Grip 0.43 Kg with 1 battery (2 in total) to balance the lens

EF to RF converter 0.11 Kg

1.4 Extender III 0.225 Kg

600 F4 II 3.945 Kg

Gitzo monopod GM5561T 0.75 Kg (needed to use the lens)

TOTAL WEIGHT 6.198 Kg

Sony A7R V 0.723 Kg with 1 battery

Sony 300 2.8 1.47 Kg

Sony 2x Teleconverter 0.205 Kg

TOTAK WEIGHT 2.398 Kg - 38.7% of the Canon set-up!

I have performed the same banknote tests over the years in the same controlled environment. A couple of previous tests are included in comments.

14 m distance (diagonally between rooms at home).

Standard illumination.

Tripod mounted (Gitzo 5 series Wimberley 2 locked down).

Self timer 2 seconds.

Mechanical shutter.

Spot focus.

Aperture priority.

IS on Mode 1.

ISO 800.

Exp comp -0.7.

6 shots taken and the sharpest selected for each combination.

A7R V 61 MP

Canon 600 F4 + 1.4 III Teleconverter (focal length 840mm)

F5.6, 1/500

Images 'as is' from the camera apart from a slight contrast increase (same level for all images), no other processing. RAW simply converted to DNG and then JPG (using the same software Adobe DNG converter). Images re-sized in photoshop to match the largest (taken with the Canon 600 & 1.4).

If you really want to closely scrutinise the image, happy to e-mail the original too you (Flickr is a bit limiting at to how far you can zoom in).

Over the weekend so far I have also been out taking 'real world' birding shots looking at focus tracking in flight and perched, feather detail resolution close and far, MFD and anything else I can think of! I will post my results along with the original uncropped version in comments so that you can get a better idea of the distances involved.

I would ideally like to perform the same tests with the Nikon option (Z8 and 600mm 6.3 lens with and without 1.4 teleconverter) but unfortunately you can't currently hire that lens (or the 800 6.3) from Wex.
