One of our daily visitors. I was at the computer, looked up and there she was staring through the window at me. She brings scraps of food to a water bowl I leave on the deck-rail, soaks it in the water then flies away with it - the food, not the bowl-:) I'm sure she was asking for the empty bowl to be filled. Crows are so intelligent and fun to watch.

Listening to Carole King today… another old Rocker that’s made beautiful music for a number of years.

Carole King is an American singer, songwriter, and musician who has been active since 1958. King has made 25 solo albums, the most successful being Tapestry, which held the record for most weeks at No. 1 by a female artist for more than 20 years.

The Hooded Merganser:

Spotted this Female Hooded Merganser Strutting Her Stuff after finishing a breakfast of Frog Legs alfresco. The legs were still attached to the frog, so it took her awhile to dine, but she seems to have had a Happy Ending : )

Hooded Mergansers are fairly common on small ponds and rivers, where they dive for fish, crayfish, and other food, seizing it in their thin, serrated bills. They find their prey underwater by sight. They can actually change the refractive properties of their eyes to improve their underwater vision. In addition, they have an extra eyelid, called a “nictitating membrane,” which is transparent and helps protect the eye during swimming, like a pair of goggles.

Hooded Merganser ducklings leave their nest cavity within 24 hours of hatching. First, their mother checks the area around the nest and calls to the nestlings from ground level. From inside the nest, the little fluffballs scramble up to the entrance hole and then flutter to the ground, which may be 50 feet or more below them. In some cases, they have to walk half a mile or more with their mother to the nearest body of water.

The oldest recorded Hooded Merganser was a male and at least 14 years, 6 months old when he was shot in Mississippi in 2009. He had been banded in Minnesota in 1995.

As you can see, this multi-tenant birdhouse appears to need a bit of renovation work. I can understand how the wood could deteriorate due to age, but I am wondering how the metal railings could have gotten bent this way. The house is mounted at the top of a pole in a local park and is probably 12-15 feet off the ground.

So while I was cleaning up after our Easter ham dinner I dumped the leftover juice out by our rock wall. It seemed we forgot to invite our new neighborhood fox to dinner who couldn't resist the heavenly ham aroma and came by to investigate. I got my camera and when we piled out the front door she moved away but the smell was overwhelming and she came back for a few shots. She licked the rock a bit and then off she went, checking out the neighbors chicken coop as she headed to the woods. This is why it's best to stay in the coop area and not venture out into the unprotected yard if you happen to be a chicken. Still on the lookout for the kits.

Today is an anniversary for me.

Five years ago today I got a condition called MdDS which greatly affects my balance. I've lived with a headache every day for these 5 years as well as body aches. I've been unable to work and became rather depressed. Until I found photography. This creative outlet - and the amazing community of beautifully generous people I have found here has truly saved me.
