My new Soom girl getting into character. This is a kumadori, a specific kabuki makeup design, meaning that the actor is playing a yokai or other supernatural creature.
Yokai and Uju(うじゅ）appeared in Daiei street, kyoto.
Uju is a character of Uzumasa Sengoku Festival at Kyoto Uzumasa Movie Studio.
Suzu is a round and hollow Japanese Shinto Bell that contains pellets that sound when agitated.
Tengu (heavenly dogs) are a class of supernatural creatures found in Japanese folklore, art, theater, and literature. They are one of the best known yōkai (monster-spirits) and are sometimes worshipped as Shinto kami (revered spirits or gods). Although they take their name from a dog-like Chinese demon (Tiangou), the tengu were originally thought to take the forms of birds of prey, and they are traditionally depicted with both human and avian characteristics.

Here are my pieces for the Little Monsters show, Million Fishes Gallery, Oct. 31. 2010 in San Franciso. I used mini-munnys, super sculpey, magic sculpt, acrylic sheets, fabric, wood and painted with acrylics.

Processed (from not much to way overboard) image I took several years ago of a toy I bought in Japan of a lantern with a human face (and big mouth). Rendered as a stained glass window and then turned into a circle (all by the same filter).

More or less completed! He is fitted for my face but not really wearable as there are no breathing holes and it's a little heavy (3 lbs). The mane is made from wool that i dyed and shaped. The teeth will get a satin sheen.
I'm really happy with this and will be making more yokai (japanese monsters) and some others....

This yōkai Tengu looks quite normal bird, somehow I drew it like that… Tengu can take a human-like form, or part human, part bird, usually it has a long, red nose…Tengu is a joker, they are troublesome opponents of Buddhism, misleading monks, possessing people. There are lots of stories about Tengu, earliest from the Heian period (794-1185).
