Large, long-legged bird shaped much like a heron. Gray body, sometimes with intense rusty staining. Adults have red crown. Often in large flocks at migration and wintering concentration points. Favors marshes and agricultural fields where they eat primarily grains. In flight, neck is outstretched, unlike herons with tucked necks. Snappy wingbeats. Listen for far-carrying bugling call. While we were walking along the dike at Tiny Marsh, we heard the distinctive bugling of cranes. Looking up, we were thrilled to see a flock of nearly forty birds arriving at the marsh. Of course, they had to land on the wrong side of the dike, in the glaring sun, but I couldn't resist photographing these beautiful birds. Not the greatest shot, with such harsh light, but a great souvenir of this trip.

I spent some time this morning enjoying my local Crossbills. They were still in a large flock but the warm weather made them sing. The song incorporates some of the "jip, jip" flight calls but also has some twangy trills and soft twitters. Have a listen to this one recorded in Northumberland by Simon Elliott: www.xeno-canto.org/602361 . I also saw pairs courtship feeding and mating. They are one of the earliest nesting species and are sometimes on eggs in February. They were largely feeding on the cones of Scots Pine (Pinus sylvestris) which are supposedly a little tough for Crossbills to cope with. But they didn't seem to be having much trouble. I even saw Siskins feeding alongside on Scots Pine cones. This one is an adult male, I'm guessing at least two years old as first year males usually look rather yellow but this one is pure red.

I see and photograph quite a lot of Crossbills but it is still always an achievement to capture one that shows off the crossed mandibles. This is a young male that often have yellow admixed with their red plumage. Birds don't have teeth so macerate (ie "chew") their food in a muscular organ called the gizzard at the start of their digestive tract. Some birds eat grit which they retain in their gizzard to help them break down the food. Birds that eat hard, dry material, such as Red Grouse which eat Heather, need a lot of grit to break down the food. Crossbills need grit because they feed mainly of the seeds of conifers which they extract from cones using their specialised crossed bill. Even the young are fed on a mashed-up porridge of pine seeds by the parents. The scientific name Loxia curvirostra refers to the specialised bill. Loxia means oblique or crosswise, and curvirostra means curved beak. This was taken near Holmfirth in West Yorkshire a few weeks ago. I am still seeing them occasionally, and have seen quite a few today, but usually distant and in flight when their jip-jip-jip calls alert me to their presence. Rare moment to see, 15 years ago I thought that shot can be repeated like maybug flight photos.
At that time, infestated Polistes wasps were not so common in Central Europe but I was well directed by my friend, Prague entomologist Jakub Straka, to find them. Today, due to warming, they can be found easily. I can see these wasps every year and also had found some male parasite adults in our kids inflatable swiming pool. Male parasites are very agile fliers but they survive only few hours after emergence, they need to find female(s) very quickly. Anyway, after a few tens of minutes of searching they drop to the ground and die of exhaustion due to limited energy supplies.
But the emergence of male(s) is so quick process that I do not know anybody who documented this in nature. In captivity, both wasps and parasites can be confused and emergence often occurs around midnight like in this case (01:24 AM).
My rechargeable AA batteries were almost discharged, I took only 2 shots.

When I finally managed to return to flickr I saw some wonderful images of this sim, so thank you to Annie Klavinham, Ziki Questi and others for sharing your images and the location.
I spent a long time exploring, and each step there was something new - the way the light changed, a detail, an angle - to delight the eye.
This is somewhere that will repay repeated visits.

So after having Grifters head done for a while I decided to make him a semi-complete figure. It's not the most detailed figure, but I like it. Xenos was pretty easy when it came to the figure, but the cannon was the hardest part.

I posted a pink male Pine Grosbeak recently www.flickr.com/photos/timmelling/51953801033/in/dateposted/ , so here's the green female. I managed to catch her making the characteristic fluty call: xeno-canto.org/694830 They live in old coniferous forests in the northern taiga zone and are usually resident there but some years they irrupt southwards where they feed on urban Rowan berries like Waxwings. I say "feed", but like fussy children they remove the skin leaving a mess in the process. Occasionally the reach Britain, but there have only been six during my lifetime, the last being Shetland in 2012 (three of the last six records have been in Shetland). This was taken in the far north of Finland.

Mythologie - Symboles : En Chine, le canard mandarin était un oiseau sacré, symbole de la fidélité conjugale, il était parfois offert aux jeunes mariés.
Habitat : Le canard mandarin fréquente les étangs, les petits lacs et les mares, toute étendue d'eau douce aussi modeste soit-elle pourvu, qu'elle se situe à proximité d'une forte densité d'arbres, d'arbustes et d'arbrisseaux d'essences les plus diverses dont certains surplombent la surface de l'eau.
Comportements : A la fin du printemps, peu après la période de reproduction, les mâles mandarin, jusque là resplendissants, perdent leurs belles couleurs. C'est l'époque de la mue. Progressivement, ils se mettent à ressembler alors aux femelles et il devient difficile d'opérer la différenciation entre les deux sexes. Le mandarin est un canard de surface : il nage bien mais il ne plonge que très rarement et uniquement en cas de danger. Il se déplace également avec aisance sur la terre ferme et il ne lui déplait pas de se percher à des hauteurs variables dans les arbres où il peut trouver abri et refuge en cas de nécéssité. D'autre part, le rapport entre l'envergure des ailes et son poids lui permet d'obtenir une très bonne navigabilité et d'être considéré comme un des meilleurs anatidés en ce qui concerne la Canard mandarin qualité de vol. En bref, ce que l'on peut appeler un excellent canard 'tout-terrain'. Introduits en Angleterre vers les années 1830 comme canard d'ornement, de nombreux individus retrouvèrent l'état sauvage et essaimèrent dans les pays voisins.
Vol : Ils ne dépassent jamais la hauteur de la cime des arbres.
Chant :Plutôt silencieux Canard mandarin excepté en parade où le mâle pousse de petits sifflements, parfois de brefs ouuick-ouuick aigus et répétés. La femelle encore plus discrète emet des sons graves kett-kett assez proches du gloussement.

Portraits of Polistes dominula wasp male (right) and strepsipteran parasite Xenos vesparum male puparia (left) in the same scale photos.
I had spent 2 weeks observing these parasites and waiting for their (males) emergence. Left picture was probably the most contributional to previous knowledge about Xenos vesparum - pale puparium on the right extruded several days after the left one and definitely after the wasp eclosion.
Newer puparium extrusion was preceded by hemolymph leakage from the surrounding of the older one, therefore I concentrated to the wasp and made some photos - remaining droplets are still there.
Taken with Pentax *ist D camera and Soligor 100mm macro lens with some extensions (time data presented belong to the wasp portrait).
