II. A.− Spéc.

REM. 1.

Fenestration, subst. fém. a) Vx.

: 13 775. "Running Down a Dream"

By Julie Middleton

/ Centretown News, Feb. 9, 2001

It’s 9 a.m., tiny icicles are forming around the brim of my fleece tuque, my eyelashes are slowly freezing together and I think, . . . “Why am I doing this?”

Much like the other 500 people enrolled in the running clinics at the Running Room’s Ottawa stores this winter, I trudge on and finish my morning run, relishing the thought of a warm shower afterwards.

The cold months have never lured me out for a jog before this January - the biting wind and slippery paths seemed harsh and uninviting.

Since I finished the National Capital 10-kilometre run last May, I’ve been dreaming of running a marathon, or at least half of one.

This year, I decided to join one of the half-marathon clinics being offered by local Running Room stores.

In four months, when my clinic is over, I will be trotting across the 21-kilometre finish line at the National Capital Race half marathon. I won’t be in the lead, but I’ll feel like I’ve won.

Phil Marsh, 37, area manager for the three Running Room stores in Ottawa, says most people who enter the clinics don’t plan to win. “There are genetically few who are going to win. That aspect has dropped down and most people just want to run to do it. It’s running for the sake of running.”

This relaxed attitude is relatively new, says Marsh. “When people would start running 20 years ago, they trained to race. These days people race to train.”

The National Capital marathon is the perfect example. “Participation in the last 10 years has gone up,the average age has gone up 10 years and the average time is an hour slower,” says Marsh.

In each of their stores, the Running Room offers classes for a variety of abilities, from beginner to advanced. Each clinic costs roughly $75 and lasts for 10 to 17 weeks. The runners learn proper technique, and attend short seminars each week on topics like stretching, shoes and nutrition.

According to Marsh, 15 per cent of people who take the “learn to run” course will run the full 42-kilometres of a marathon in two years. “In the beginning most are terrified of running around the block, and then two years later they’re running a marathon.”

At 6:15 p.m. on a snowy Tuesday evening, people start arriving at the Slater Street Running Room for the half-marathon clinic.

Chatting and waiting for the class to start, runners in light windbreakers and black spandex with reflective stripes are scattered around the room.

Mary Reilly (above photo), 36, started running Oct. 19, 1997. “I remember, because I was going through a really rough time in my life. I decided to use running to get through it instead of other ways.”

Her boyfriend signed her up. “He knew I would never sign myself up. I’ve never done races, I’ve always been terrified. This is terrifying, but I’m still doing it,” says Reilly, getting ready for the Tuesday night group run.

Moira Johnson, 50, says she likes running because it’s a great stress reliever. “We all challenge ourselves mentally everday.”

Instructor Peter Dudley, 44, started running six years ago. “I was playing hockey four nights a week but I wanted to try something new.”

Since then he has run in four marathons and 20 half-marathons. In April he and his wife are celebrating their 22-year wedding anniversary by running a marathon together in California.

Later the same night the runners start shuffling out the door. The light snow sweeps against our faces, our shoes slide over the freshly ploughed pavement and our breath rises up in clouds.

Tonight, I know why I run.

Yeah, I am a design maniac. If I don't like something I'll redesign! My latest creation is my own personal portfolio. Running pretty sweet in marios.tziortzis.com/ with my own custom made engine called 'Onix'. Also all my photos featured here in flickr are under the 'Photography' section. That flickr's API is really sleek! Oh I forgot to mention that this was written having web standards in mind so it works on all browsers!

There is a sad story in the local newspaper about a very fast marathoner runner who lost out because of an unregistered runner. (See below.)

==========================================

Local Runner Stripped of PEC Marathon Title

by Bruce Bell, The (Belleville) Intelligencer news story, Monday, October 15, 2012

Despite crossing the finish line almost 10 minutes ahead of the closest female competitor, Jutta Merilainen of Batawa has been relegated to runner-up in the ninth annual County Marathon on Sunday.

Merilainen lost the title, which would have been her third, because of a complaint lodged by the camp of the runner-up, Anna Kibor of Kenya, who now trains out of Hamilton.

The complaint was made after the race because Merilainen, 40, was accompanied by an unregistered runner during a portion of the race.

Race director Mark Henry said the decision was made to protect the integrity of the event.

“Technical matters with races run at this level are not uncommon and I think we’ve been very fortunate over our nine years not to have had more technical issues,” he said. “It’s very unfortunate it happened, but we have to adhere to the standards which allow this race to be a Boston (Marathon) qualifier and we will lose that if we don’t.”

Henry said the outcome was to the satisfaction all the parties involved.

“The reality is, this often happens in the world of sports and we were fortunate to be able to resolve this not long after the race,” he said. “We do have the mechanisms in place to deal with issues like this and in the end, we were able to settle it with a handshake and I think everyone felt that was the best way to do it.”

After the decision, Kibor was awarded the Gayle Olinekova Trophy and the $1,500 winner’s cheque.

Fellow Kenyan, Thomas Omwenga, crossed the finish line first in the men’s division in a time of 2:34.43 to capture the Rolf Lund Trophy and the $1,500 winner’s purse.

==========================================

Below is another story from the same local newspaper about Jutta Merilainen who completed the Boston Marathon, and fortunately had left the finish line area when the bombs exploded (See below.)

==========================================

Local Runner says Boston Bombing Won't Scare Her Away

by Ernst Kuglin, The (Belleville) Intelligencer news story, April 16, 2013

Normally, Jutta Merilainen likes to hang around the meeting area at the Boston Marathon.

Monday, she didn't.

The Trenton marathon runner had to be back at work in Belleville Tuesday morning. She's a nurse at the Community Care access centre.

It was work that prevented Merilainen from becoming part of the carnage in the aftermath of the two bomb blasts that killed three people and injured at least 176 others.

“I guess it was a blessing,” said Merilainen. “I have a lot of friends who run the marathon and I like to meet and talk to them following the race.”

It was Merilainen's third time running the marathon. She crossed the finish line around 12:30 p.m., finishing in 58th place in the elites women's division.

Soon after, she headed back to her hotel, packed, and took a cab to a friend's hotel.

“I got to the hotel and that's when we heard about the bombings,” she said. “It was unbelievable. I couldn't believe that something like this could ever happen. We watched what was happening on the television.”

They knew they had to leave Boston — fast.

“We saw a lot of emergency vehicles heading into Boston on the way out of the city,” she said.

They were stopped at the U.S. border before entering Canada.

“They wanted to know if we had any pictures that investigators could use,” said Merilainen.

The tragic, horrifying events that took place Monday afternoon won't prevent Merilainen from running the marathon a fourth time.

“Terrorists want us to feel fear,” she said. “They won't stop me from coming back — ever.”

Merilainen says her heart goes out to Boston's residents, the emergency personnel and the thousands of volunteers who make the city's marathon one of the greatest sporting events in the world.

“These are people who cheer for us,” she said. “They are so wonderful. You can hear them during the race saying 'there goes someone from Canada' and they wave and cheer. It's easy to lose your thought processes because of the excitement and enthusiasm.

“It's like a dream.”

On Monday, it became a nightmare.

“It's horrible to think some of those same people who cheered for us suffered horrible injuries — .they lost limbs,” she said. “It makes you frustrated and angry. I had tears in my eyes — this was so unfortunate, so terrible.”

As for a personal performance, Merilainen wasn't pleased with her race result.

“I've done a better,” she said.

However, Merilainen was quick to put the events of the day into perspective.

“Considering what happened, my time really doesn't matter,” she said.

Merilainen said she will return to Boston for the 2014 marathon. And, she hopes other runners aren't scared off.

“I hope a lot of other people go back as well,” she said.

.....................................................................

Here is information about the race from the website of Run Ottawa:

"Started in 2005 by running coach and RunnersWeb.com founder Ken Parker, the event aims to provide an opportunity for competitive women to lead a race, set the pace, and be the overall race winners, as well as encourage new runners to come out and experience the race day environment for the first time.

Since its inception, the race has been draw for Canada and the world’s elite female runners, like New Zealand’s Mary Davies and Kenya’s Lucy Njeri Macharia. Canadian Rachel Hannah is the reigning two-time champion, and also set the course record of 15:57.5 in 2014.

The run was named in memory of Émilie Mondor, the first Canadian woman to run sub-15:00 in the 5K and a member of Team Canada at the 2004 Olympics. Originally from Mascouche, Quebec, Émilie was living in Ottawa to train for the marathon when she died in a car accident in the fall of 2006.

All 5K and 1K participants will receive a commemorative medal and shirt. All tot trot participants will receive a medal.

This is a timed race and results will appear on Sportstats.ca
