Starting a new Project 365. I almost launched into a dissertation on the whys and wherefores, but. Enough. 8/9/10 is the start date. I am committed. Yay for Project 365!
This was some wrapping paper I used for a birthday present (a gold scarf from Ecuador) for my wonderful friend Nina, who celebrated SIXTY on the third. Though you definitely would not know it to look at her; she's the epitome of youthful looks. We were up her way in the Bay Area for a wedding (no wrapping paper involved, all done via the internet) and had a lovely afternoon: Book Passage in Corte Madera (yes, I bought books--two of them, about birds) and a tour of her new digs with her aunt, also Nina. So. There's some context for this rather odd first shot of my project.
December 19: Did my Christmas shopping today: niece, great-niece, other niece, husband, sister-in-law (not necessarily in that order: husband gets the most gifts, and the most thoughtful ones really). My brother I did last week at Whole Foods: I always do bbq sauces for him; he's a fabulous barbecuer. And I am eternally thankful that I have a tiny family. Until I wish I had a great big one, with all the hugs and love and squabbles that go with. Which I do occasionally. Wish. Yeah. But for today, I've got my tiny amount of Christmas wrapping done. And I'm looking forward to seeing everyone on Friday. Yeah.
Speck's first Christmas involved her first chance to tear open packages and rustle around in the resulting debris...

I started wrapping Christmas presents earlier today, but had to stop when my son came home. Later he went sledding with his daddy and I was able to continue.

Also known as Shy Man, and a shy fellow this one is. Got him as a present a couple of days ago, but he still doesn't want to come out of the wrapping paper and plastic bag he was in....
(Yes, I know in this case 'shy' should be translated as 'humble', but 'timid' fitted better :P )
So I really need some lighting and flash advice for portraits. I used Barbie as my model as you can see. She was very cooperative and never moved.
For this photo I used a 200W shop light placed over head and a 75W aimed at the background. Both bulbs are soft white with no diffusing.
Even using a 200W bulb I was still getting shadows on the background from my flash.
What can I do when the only flash I have is my camera's built-in flash?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Following the classic Jeff strategy of this quarter, the project that was pitched originally as the joke ended up becoming the destined path. The corny wood wrapping paper became even more genius when it was actually wrapping 4-by-whatever pieces of actual wood, representing a building that would of course never be constructed that way. In the final phase, the grain was actually made in relief, with attached pieces of painted and laser-cut museum board. Delightfully cheeky and actually very beautiful in the end. And we had put all our money on the foam "Pope Hat" skin!
