How the American high-end fashion business is creating a design for a better life for the widows of the decades of conflict in Afghanistan.
“The first time I bought them in they were shocked by the sheerness of these things… and they were shaking their heads, saying ‘These Americans – I don’t know what they want!’”
The conflicts in Afghanistan over the last 30 years have caused up to 2 million deaths – creating a generation of widows and orphans in the country. But Matin Maulawizada, whose own family escaped to the USA during the Soviet invasion in the 1980s, has returned to the country of his birth to help some of these widows. Arriving from the US bearing designs commissioned by a niche-market fashion house, his company, Afghan Hands, capitalizes on the skill of these women with a needle and thread and is now not only earning them an income, but teaching them literacy and numeracy as well.

At a World Vision summer camp just outside Ulan-Bataar, Mongolia, the kids (orphans and kids with abusive parents) have a tournament, the aim being to pull the other kid off the other person's back. It was a knockout tournament and in the end the two finalists called it a draw.

What an incredible weekend for Ryan Eversley and the RealTime Racing team, at Road America! After a dominating 1-2 finish for Ryan and teammate Peter Cunningham, on Saturday, Ryan started Sunday’s Pirelli World Challenge GT race on the pole, led the entire race from green to checker, and claimed his second win of the weekend! One of the most memorable days of our trip to Africa. We camped overnight at this remote beach and played catch with all the kids and went swimming to cool off. When we arrived at the beach we all sat down and listened to beautiful singing coming from the nearby village. It was awesome.
For our main trek, we would need to use machetes to clear a path through the dense primary rainforest. Zul showed us how its done.
It was during the World Challenge 2000 season at Mosport, where our own Dave Schardt returned from a major wreck at the previous race and finished 3rd in his Porsche GT3 Cup car on Forgeline WC3 wheels. Perseverance and determination in spite of every obstacle.
