Well it isn't quite 30 Thursday but what the heck, I'm still awake after a 17 hour day so here goes. SOO 710 and 2401 start out of the Rapids toward Port Edward with 54 cars on August 26, 1978. 710 was pretty tough looking with the peeling nose paint but ended up getting a repaint a couple years later.

No need to fix dinner for me he said.

Another normal scheduled freight train to Kurkimäki has arrived with empty timber wagons and class Dr18 leading the empty train. Now, the diesel is going towards the other end of the train, and it is having a sightseeing while working.

This Furrow Bee was on the Veronica flowers out front. I don't see as many of these guys as I do the honeybees.

Taken 15 August 2021 near Wasilla, Alaska.

An Alaska Railroad crew is working Whittier yard with a pair of SD70MACs getting ready to double up a big 120N freight of mixed manifest and intermodal traffic off the AML barge up from Seattle that they will take north to Anchorage a little later.

Whittier is the ARRC's main port for interchange of both containers and railcars which arrive via the weekly AML barge from Seattle. The containers are stacked on racks two or three high above the main barge deck which contains 8 tracks for interchange of railcars to and from the BNSF & UP. The concrete structure rising beyond is the long abandoned Buckner Building, once the largest building in Alaska. And the single track at left and the tent structure beside it is the ARR's passenger 'station' which mostly serves passengers walking directly across the street to and from waiting cruise ships.

I did this one a few weeks ago with several others. I think it's kinda sexy so thought I'd post it before it gets lost.

This porter will not carry this heavy load up the 1400 meters. He will do a lot more. The porters take it in turns to cover sections from sunrise to sunset. The loads are sometimes around 50 kg.

Their body adapts incredibly well, developing a very specific musculature for their work.

I’ve always had admiration for the working dogs. Border Collies and Aussies are great herders, Labs make great seeing eye dogs. German Shepherds are awesome guard dogs, and who doesn’t love those St. Bernard’s with those casks of brandy. I decided to put our dog Kenzie to work. I offered her a choice of professions and she seemed drawn to waiting tables. The only problem is the only waiting she does, is waiting to be fed. I raised a beggar instead of a waiter. I guess she'll never get one of those green service dog vests. Sigh....

Happy Slider's Sunday everyone.

While few people realize it, the ARR does own trackage outside the Last Frontier. Not much though!

The ARR owns the barge slip on Harbor Island in Seattle that they use as their interchange point to the UP and BNSF and the greater North American rail network. The ownership is actually 50/50 with Seaspan Corp (a Washington Group company) although Seaspan has never used the slip. Over time ARR’s ownership stake gradually rises since they presently pay for all maintenance and upkeep on the structure. ARR’s trackage ends adjacent the nose of the unit (hence the ARR logo on the sign) meaning the railroad owns about one car length on solid ground.

UP Seattle based yard crew YSE51R is seen here beginning the process of stripping the weekly barge that has arrived from the 49th State. Three barges owned and operated by Alaska Railbelt Marine (a member of the Lynden family of companies) are constantly cycling between Seattle and Whittier, AK carrying railcars on 8 tracks and containers stacked three high in the racks above. They are truly marvels of modern logistics!

Since the ARR owns no yard trackage in Seattle and has no locomotives of its own with which to switch the barge, the UP provides this service since it is the railroad that owns the connecting rails on Harbor Island. At the time this yard assignment was normally just a two man RCL crew, but on barge days an engineer was called and the barge is worked by a conventional three man crew.

In this view the UP crew has reached in with their handle (in order to keep the locomotive off the slip itself) consisting of a covered hopper and three old cabooses to begin pulling cars off the southbound ARMS voyage 1023 (the 23rd sailing of 2010). This particular barge is the Fairbanks Provider built by Gunderson in 2001 it is 420 ft long and 100 ft wide with 3190 linear feet of track on the deck and a dead weight of 15,300 tons.

The train journey home after a hard day's work

RLHH 2111 is on the point of SOR 597 as they switch Nicholson and Cates lumber.

The cars on the left were storage cars being paid to sit there by Procor. The cars in the background is actually 597's train.

At least the boss is at home today

After assembling a nice-sized train, they had to pull their train, in cuts, through the elevator track at Sibley IL to close roof doors. I'm not entirely sure why this was done later in the trip but it became their activity of choice for pretty much the rest of the afternoon. The place is always worth a visit, especially when 1 Larry's truck engine is back at the shop for traction motor work and the other is west, stuck behind this guy.

One Detroit Center.

CP 4404 proudly wears it's mid-1990's paint as it sits in the lead position of CP H11, seen here working the wax factory outside Toronto Yard. I imagine when the engine was originally painted it may have been viewed as a downgrade due to it's SOO heritage, but now it undoubtedly holds quite a lot of value amongst railfans as it is the only active GP38 on the CP roster to still wear the dual flag paint..... aside from the 4507 which was given a extremely lame makeover after a collision, losing it's italicized nose logo.

BNSF 2607 runs up north along the Grove Yard after working at the PCA.

Working currently on the new theme of NeverendingSL

Soon it will be open with a whole new setup and storytelling.

Stay tuned!

CPKC's Duluth based job JS12 with a lone GP20C-ECO is seen spotting boxcars at the Valley Worldwide Logistics warehouse in the Duluth Seaway Port Authority Complex across Helberg Drive from the small former Soo Line yard that CPKC retains on Rices Point that this job and at least one other are based out of.

Historically the Northern Pacific was the dominant railroad in Duluth and they had massive facilities here, though multiple competing Class 1s also served the city which even today is reached by four of the remaining six mega systems. In addition to Soo and NP, the Omaha Road (CNW), and Great Northern maintained smaller yards here on Rices Point which had connections to Superior via the NP's Minnesota and Wisconsin drawbridges as well as the dual rail/road Interstate Bridge.

Rices Point was once laced with a truly astonishing amount of rail infrastructure and though greatly diminished you can still find CPKC and BNSF jobs working the area daily and can catch the UP making a trip over from Superior twice a week.

For a sweeping overview here's a shot of mine of this same job from a visit the year prior: flic.kr/p/2pwy6Z3

I tried to get in closer by adding a 20mm extension tube to my 100mm macro lens while working in the direct early morning light. Not as sharp as I was hoping but I wanted the shot with the two bees so I'm reluctantly accepting the results I got with the settings I used. Shooting against the white flower was challenging because it blows out quickly. Another lesson for me and I am grateful to learn and walk away with additional knowledge. If you are in the states, Happy 4th of July, enjoy the day off and I'll look forward to fireworks pictures tomorrow.

Happy Wall and Window Wednesday!

Providence & Worcester train WONR makes a pickup at the siding near Polar Beverages in Worcester Yard before heading south towards Putnam to swap cars with the NRWO crew. This days power was two B39-s and a GP38-2 all wearing proper paint. I still find it fascinating it now takes two crews to move this train the 40 miles between Worcester and Plainfield.
