A Snowy Egret was working hard to try to consume the fish for almost half an hour. I had to leave so could not confirm the result. But I would not be surprised if it could swallow the whole fish.

During my visit this year (Oct 2019), earth movers were busily working on new water impoundments along the Kern River Flood Canal just west of the Tule Elk State Natural Reserve near Tupman, California. The Kern River is usual dry with most of the water taken out of it updstream except in wet years that have high amounts of spring run off. The impounds at the end of the river along the flood canal allow for water storage during these wet years and, according to a geologist I talked to, needed groundwater recharge. The sizes of the equipment working on the project were impressive.

I went looking for damsel flies but many flowers and activities in our local wildlife centre are slow to develop. The bees are working well as usual on the bugleweed.

Happy Eyes of March!

The Covid pandemic made a lot of us work from home - now a lot of us don't want to go back to working in an office.

I shot this in the yard, a honey bee working one of the yellow flowers in the garden.

Saw this hard worker on a tree on Ward's Island, Toronto.

If you have ever seen a beaver in the wild, you will see just how hard working animals they are. If they are not chopping trees down with their sharp teeth, they are carrying twigs and branches to their dams.

This particular beaver must have carried at least 10 branches to its den, which was amazing to witness!

After a very quick crew change, I rolled up to the signal bridge at Mans just to get ready to wait for my shot, only to see 1080 literal yards from me, pulling out of the yard during it's work. I've never seen them swap this fast, but I sure am glad I made it back in time to grab a frame!

Here is another look back a dozen years to a simple favorite and the only time I shot a train working here on the two stub ended warehouse tracks accessed via a diamond over the Roundhouse Lead that is right beneath me under the bridge.

This view looks down from the sidwalk of the C Street Bridge as an ARR yard job with GP38-2 2005 in the 1980s Alaska bold scheme switches out cars at the warehouse. The building on the left houses the ARR's stores department and they still regularly ship and receive company material by rail. Track components (spikes, anchors, etc.) come up by barge in foreign line boxcars while various other company material is shuttled around the system on flats, gons, or in boxcars. Beyond the train can be seen the bustling port of Anchorage and then the blue waters of cook inlet. On the horizon is the 4396 ft peak of Mt. Susitna, known locally as the "Sleeping Lady" for the mountain's resemblance to a woman in repose on her back. To the right is the abandoned warehouse, which is one of the oldest structures in the Anchorage yard complex and whose fate is uncertain, though I do believe a dozen years later it still stands.

The Jackson & Lansing's Monday day job running as CSX Z646-17 on CSX is working the south side of CSX Ensel Yard in Lansing, Michigan while CSX L305-16 has come to life to put together their train on the north side of the yard after getting banner tested on the way in. It's refreshing seeing shortline and class I standard cab EMD's ruling the roost together anywhere these days. 11/17/2025
