The returning prodigal..who once lost his way..

Catherine Marshall writes in A Closer Walk: βI can see that Jesus drew men and women into the kingdom by promising them two things: first, trouble-hardship, danger; and second, joy. But what curious alchemy is this that he can make even danger and hardship seem joyous? He understands things about human nature that we grasp only dimly: few of us are really challenged by the promise of soft living, by an emphasis on me-first, or by a life of easy compromise.β
...yet, this is how the Gospel is often presented today; and we know how durable are it's fruits.

. . . by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for through the Law comes the knowledge of sin.
-Romans 3:20
=========================
* Have you ever heard someone use the term βlegalismβ1? Legalism is the belief that salvation (being made right with God) can be gained through keeping the Law. But if the Law is like a mirror, rather than a cleansing agent, does legalism make sense as a way to righteousness?
Why do you think some people cling to it?
*With regard to the Law there are perhaps two extreme positions. One is legalism as defined above. The other position, βlicense,β 2 tends to view the grace of God in such a way that the Law has little or no practical meaning. Legalism and license mark the opposite ends of a continuum which reflects the way that most people view the Law. Where would you place
yourself on this continuum, closer to legalism or license? Why?
Decide & Do
Ideally, a person would find balance in the very middle of the continuum between the extremes of legalism and license. Perhaps that center point of balance could be defined by the term liberty.
3 A person with true liberty before God is a person who is free to revere the Law as the
holy and righteous standard of God (Romans 7:12) and at the same time free from being bound to it as a means of being made right with God.
Liberty is Godβs goal for every one of His followers. If you tend toward the license side of the continuum, then set aside some time to study the Law of God, particularly the Ten
Commandments (Exodus 20:1-17 and Deuteronomy 5:6-21). If you tend toward the legalism side of the continuum, then devote some time to the study of Romans 6, 7 and 8, or the book of
Galatians. Ask God to use your study of His Word to liberate you to a right relationship to the
Law and to Himself!
-The HOPE-
"All of us have had that veil removed so that we can be mirrors that brightly reflect the glory of the Lord. And as the Spirit of the Lord works within us, we become more and more like him and reflect his glory even more." 2 Corinthians 3:18 (NLT).
Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
Hereβs a rhetorical question or two from Psalm 24 Who may ascend the hill of the Lord? Who may stand in His Holy Place?
He who has clean hands and a pure heart, who does not lift up his soul to an idol or swear by what is false.
For he will receive blessing from the Lord and vindication from God his Savior. (Psalm 24:3-5)
Sounds impossible. With man, it is.
As Jesus told Peter, with man this is impossible, but not with God. All things are possible with God. (Mark 10:27)
He Will Come and Save you:
βProsperity, pleasure, and success may be rough of grain and common in fibre, but sorrow is the most sensitive of all created things.β
Those are the words of the famed pleasure seeker, Oscar Wilde. In his De Profundis, written in prison, he wrote with profound earnestness about how much sorrow had taught him. He went on to add, βWhere there is sorrow there is holy ground. Some day people will realize what that means. They will know nothing of life till they do.β
As I reflect on those words, I take note first of the one who wrote them. A life of pain was the farthest thing from his mind when he made his choices. In that sense, none of us ever really choose sorrow. But I take note of something else in his words. His claim is bold; he is not merely confessing an idea written across his worldview, but one he insists is written across the world: Sorrow is holy ground and those who do not learn to walk there know nothing of what living means. What he means at the very least is that some of lifeβs most sacred truths are learned in the midst of sorrow. He learned, for example, that raw unadulterated pleasure for pleasureβs sake is never a fulfilling pleasure. Violation of the sacred in the pursuit of happiness is not truly a source of happiness. In fact, it kills happiness because it can run roughshod over many a victim. Pleasure that profanes is pleasure that destroys.
Sorrow on the other hand--while never pursued--comes into oneβs life and compels us to see our own finitude and frailty. It demands of us seriousness and tenderness if we are to live life the way it is meant to be lived. One of the most important things sorrow does is to show us what it needs and responds to. Wilde said it himself: βSorrow is a wound that bleeds when any hand but that of love touches it, and even then must bleed again, though not in pain.β
Of all the descriptions given about Jesus, there is one that unabashedly stands out to confront us. It is a description uttered by the prophet Isaiah, prodding mind and heart at once: βHe was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief. Like one from whom men hide their faces; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflictedβ (53:3). In this season of Easter before us, with whatever sorrows we might be holding, it is a description all the more fitting to reflect upon.
Maybe you are at a time in your life when hurt is writ large upon your thoughts. The Lord Jesus is not unacquainted with your pain. In fact, he draws near particularly with a hand of love. Your wound may still bleed for a while to remind you of your weakness. But he can help carry the pain to carry you in strength. This could indeed be holy ground for you. It was most certainly for him.

Paul writes, β[W]e have this treasure injars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry around in our body the death of Jesus, so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our bodyβ (2 Corinthians 4:7-10).
This photograph is taken , ironically from a cemetary - a stark reminder that every work of greed, corruption and injustice will not go unnoticed by the Judge who's heart cries out for justice and righteousness to the oppressed. NOT in the externalities of "religious fervor" and fanaticism, but from hearts that are filled with the fear of the Lord and Truth.

..and a song of testimony & thanks!!
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
Paul said "If it is possible, as far as it depends on you live at peace with everyone." (Romans 12:9-21) We can't control the circumstances that confront us but we can control our response to them. By our words and actions, we can have a similar calming, comforting and healing effect on those around us, and as we do we identify ourselves as children of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
There's a lot of persecution in the world today, but not all of it is covered by this verse. Only that which we endure in the pursuit of righteousness is noted.
"Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

This candle lamp gave out a curious pattern in the dark, and it reminded me of how the Lord refines and shapes us...and the light that brings out the beauty in us all as well.
Malachi 3:3 says:
"He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver."
Silver is a very ductile and malleable (slightly harder than gold) metal with a brilliant white metallic luster that can take a high degree of polish. It has the highest electrical conductivity of all metals, even higher than copper, but at greater cost and tarnishability .
Among metals, pure silver has the highest thermal conductivity, whitest color, the highest optical reflectivity. Silver also has the lowest contact resistance of any metal. Silver halides are photosensitive and are remarkable for their ability to record a latent image that can later be developed chemically. [that's for fellow Flicker fans] Silver is stable in pure air and water, but tarnishes when it is exposed to air or water [contaminated] containing ozone or hydrogen sulfide. [edited from Wikipedia]
back to Malachi....and the lesson from His Word, i received in the mail just today..
Malachi 3:3 says:
"He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver."
This verse puzzled some women in a Bible study and they wondered what this statement meant about the character and nature of God.
One of the women offered to find out the process of refining silver and get back to the group at their next Bible Study.
That week, the woman called a silversmith and made an appointment to watch him at work. She didn't mention anything about the reason for her interest beyond her curiosity about the process of refining silver.
As she watched the silversmith, he held a piece of silver over the fire and let it heat up. He explained that in refining silver, one needed to hold the silver in the middle of the fire where the flames were hottest as to burn away all the impurities.
The woman thought about God holding us in such a hot spot; then she thought again about the verse that says:
"He sits as a refiner and purifier of silver."
She asked the silversmith if it was true that he had to sit there in front of the fire the whole time the silver was being refined.
The man answered that yes, he not only had to sit there holding the silver, but he had to keep his eyes on the silver the entire time it was in the fire. If the silver was left a moment too long in the flames, it would be destroyed.
The woman was silent for a moment. Then she asked the silversmith, "How do you know when the silver is fully refined?"
He smiled at her and answered,
"Oh, that's easy -- when I see my image in it."

1 Thes. 5: 12-25
12My friends, we ask you to be thoughtful of your leaders who work hard and tell you how to live for the Lord. 13Show them great respect and love because of their work. Try to get along with each other. 14My friends, we beg you to warn anyone who isn't living right. Encourage anyone who feels left out, help all who are weak, and be patient with everyone. 15Don't be hateful to people, just because they are hateful to you. Rather, be good to each other and to everyone else.
16Always be joyful 17and never stop praying. 18Whatever happens, keep thanking God because of Jesus Christ. This is what God wants you to do.
19Don't turn away God's Spirit 20or ignore prophecies. 21Put everything to the test. Accept what is good 22and don't have anything to do with evil.
23I pray that God, who gives peace, will make you completely holy. And may your spirit, soul, and body be kept healthy and faultless until our Lord Jesus Christ returns. 24The one who chose you can be trusted, and he will do this.
25Friends, please pray for us.

GOD'S VERDICT reversed the world's judgment. He exalted his humbled servant, Jesus, and gave to him a name above every other name, in heaven or on earth. β¦ By accepting this position of greatest humiliation, Jesus had taken the road to highest exaltation. β¦ The least of all and the servant of all had become in fact the greatest of all and the Savior of all.
Paul S. Minear, The Kingdom and the Power
Jesus describes a scene that is far more abrupt and shocking than the story we often remember of a son who wanders away and returns home again. It is not the wayward son who runs to the father but the father who runs to his wayward son, and at that, without any assurance of his son's repentance whatsoever. In fact, the father runs without any promise that the son is even home to stay. Moreover, it is not the son who we find kneeling in the story Jesus tells, but the father. It is as if he is reminding us once again that all have indeed fallen short of the glory of God, but that God has fallen to pick us up again and again, and to bring us home. Jesus gives us a story whose merciful ending has far more to do with the actions of the father than any action of the son.

Seems like time moves faster these days...
I used to think that the older i get, the slower the pace of life. Maybe i'm not that old yet. But i see age in my parents.
And i realize one thing..wealth, health and relationships are pursued in that order in our youth; and as we age our priorities change...in the REVERSED order of value.
And for me...this relationship in Christ has made this mad world a lot more sane..where God's peace within me, reigns.

Praised (honored, blessed) be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ (the Messiah)! By His boundless mercy we have been born again to an ever-living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead,
[Born anew] into an inheritance which is beyond the reach of change and decay [imperishable], unsullied and unfading, reserved in heaven for you,
Who are being guarded (garrisoned) by God's power through [your] faith [till you fully inherit that [a]final] salvation that is ready to be revealed [for you] in the last time.
1 Peter 1:3-5 (Contemporary English Version)
A Real Reason for Hope
Praise God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ. God is so good, and by raising Jesus from death, he has given us new life and a hope that lives on. God has something stored up for you in heaven, where it will never decay or be ruined or disappear.
You have faith in God, whose power will protect you until the last day. [a] Then he will save you, just as he has always planned to do

Praise, Faith, and confession from Jeremiah, preceded Gods response in vs.27.
Praises rose from Jeremiah's heart and lips of His character.
Faith rose from his heart in remembrance of HIS great deeds and power.
Confession took over, as he pours out his heart for sin and disobedience for a people who no longer feared the Lord.

this is my last instalment on the "A Man After God's Heart" set for 2011.
"How long, O LORD, will I call for help,
And You will not hear?
I cry out to You, 'Violence!'
Yet You do not save.
Why do you make me see iniquity,
And cause me to look on wickedness?
Yes, destruction and violence are before me;
Strife exists and contention arises.
Therefore the law is ignored
And justice is never upheld.
For the wicked surround the righteous;
Therefore justice comes out perverted" (Habakkuk 1:2-4).
"Will You restrain Yourself at these things, O LORD? Will You keep silent and afflict us beyond measure?" (Isaiah 64:12).
"But this I call to mind,
and therefore I have hope:
The steadfast love of the LORD never ceases,
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.
'The LORD is my portion,' says my soul,
'therefore I will hope in him'" (Lamentations 3:21-24).
BUT the necessary prerequisite is hard to do:
2 Chronicles 7:14 (Amplified Bible)
If My people, who are called by My name, shall humble themselves, pray, seek, crave, and require of necessity My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.
I will inquire of the Lord.
..and i will be healed.
Healing Rain:
I'm reminded that it's not in our "saintly" mode that Christ's love is complete, but in our worst, unfaithful, disobedient, hard headed, hard hearted self....The times when i turned away from Him, ignored Him and was anything but a testimony to the sonship I profess in Him.
...and I am encouraged that , nothing, no one and no circumstance can saperate me from His love. No , nothing except perhaps my total rebellion and rejection of Him.
Romans:8:35 "Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?"
Romans 8:38-39
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
15For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship
lastly...on the faith of little children:
Trust should be like the feeling of a one year old baby

he laughs......because he knows you will catch him;
that's Trust
Jeremiah 29:11 (New Living Translation)
11 For I know the plans I have for you,β says the Lord. βThey are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.
Mehdi Dibaj:
Truly, living with God is glorious.
The darker the night, the closer the dawn. The darker the clouds, the more plentiful the life-giving rains. The narrower the way, the more Godβs unlimited help!
The greater the troubles, the more the comforts from God. Though the waves of the sea get higher, this can never disturb the calm of the depths!
Though the storm be violent, it cannot displace the mountain. Those who trust in the Lord are like mountains that cannot be shaken.
The person who lives in the shadow of the Almighty will never be disturbed by the heat.
"Though seeing, they do not see;
though hearing, they do not hear or understand. 14In them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah:
" 'You will be ever hearing but never understanding;
you will be ever seeing but never perceiving.
15For this people's heart has become calloused;
they hardly hear with their ears,
and they have closed their eyes.
Otherwise they might see with their eyes,
hear with their ears,
understand with their hearts
and turn, and I would heal them.'[a] 16But blessed are your eyes because they see, and your ears because they hear. 17For I tell you the truth, many prophets and righteous men longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it.
18"Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19When anyone hears the message about the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away. 22The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful. 23But the one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it. He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown." -Matthew 13:13-23
In the end, there is only one question that every person must answer: βWhat will you do with
Jesus?β (Acts 4:12).

Serenity Prayer
God grant me the serenity
to accept the things I cannot change;
courage to change the things I can;
and wisdom to know the difference.
Living one day at a time;
Enjoying one moment at a time;
Accepting hardships as the pathway to peace; Taking, as He did, this sinful world
as it is, not as I would have it;
Trusting that He will make all things right
if I surrender to His Will;
That I may be reasonably happy in this life
and supremely happy with Him
Forever in the next.
Amen.

Mourning is the evidence of love and compassion. To mourn is to experience deep sorrow or grief. When we mourn the loss of a loved one we're expressing our deepest grief over the reality of death. Our Lord feels the same way. He's called a man of sorrows, familiar with grief. (Isaiah 53:3) Only one who knows sorrow and has experienced grief can effectively comfort those who mourn. As someone once wrote, "In every pain that rends the heart, the Man of Sorrows has a part.β He bore our grief's and our sorrows; He should know.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they WILL be comforted.
"Seek and you will find." "Draw near to Him and He will draw near to you."
Stop for a moment and contemplate HIS creation; not ours, and allow the still small voice of the Lord speak. But first,.. seek, the way of truth and life.
This is the first in a set i plan to make that speaks of the attributes of the Biblical God.
A God who is not "from a distance, watching", but one who is actively involved, and a God who is personal. A God, who, created emotions, and shares the same with His people.
"Worship is when you're aware of what you've been given is far greater than what you can give. Worship is the awareness that were it not for HIS touch, you'd still be hobbling and hurting, bitter and broken. Worship is the "THANK YOU", that refuses to be silenced. Worship is the voluntary act of gratitude offered by the saved to the Savior, by the healed to the Healer, and by the delivered to the Deliverer." -Max Lucado
