Knowing when to walk away,
is wisdom.
Being able to,
is courage.
Walking away with your head held high,
is dignity.

Sarah Mclachlan - Witness
After a long day driving through Denali National Park in Alaska, we went to dinner and our waiter happened to mention that "the lights are out." We were thinking the electricity somewhere went out and then realized what he was talking about. I jumped in the car and drove north until I found the best display of Northern Lights that I have seen. It is amazing to me how, if you are looking, all things witness that there is a Supreme Creator.
know yourself to be the changeless witness of the changeful mind, -that is enough.

I wasn't the only one to decide that the Tundra Trail would be a good place to catch the eclipse. While wandering around looking for rock formations to shoot with, I saw this group perched on a rock and decided to frame with them.

Sunset witnesses gather each night,
To watch the sky in its fading light.
They see the day bow out with grace,
As dusk paints the world in a warm embrace.
..for witness a scene soon to be lost forever. A couplet of SD50's brings up the rear of westbound CSX grain train G913, which has just completed its climb to the summit of Sand Patch at SA Tower and continues its journey across the Keystone Subdivision. Vaders are peaking over the train and those CPLs are on borrowed time. So is the tower, demolished later that year. ETTS, long before I knew what that term meant.

I had positioned my camera on the rocky beach at Wakefield waiting for the night sky. Anticipating the alignment of planets, soon they would reveal themselves and I could say, I had been present to witness the event. However, long before that, the horizon turned yellow. The low clinging clouds became blood red, and the water, was a vibrant blue.
With a puddle of water left from the outgoing tide, a reflection was born. I repositioned my camera so the outline of the puddle matched the distant mountains, but in reverse. The colours of the moment were truly remarkable. And later that night, the clear sky allowed me to witness the alignment.
Witnessing the majestic dynamic winter light at Skagsanden Beach in Lofoten was unforgettable. The way the clouds moved and the reflections on the wet sand created such a dramatic scene. Did you know Lofoten is actually located inside the Arctic Circle? It makes the light even more magical.

Where was I two years ago this week? Apparently navigating through some Pinebarrens Morning Fog.
Empty Pinebarrens Reservoir.
Peggy's Cove Lighthouse has been standing tall to witness the life and people coming and going. So is the sun.

Walking back to the B&B in Quechee, Vermont, I looked up and was fortunate to witness this colourful hot air balloon lifting off from the Ottauquechee River in the late afternoon. The tranquility was only interrupted by the sound of the pilot turning up the burners to get it off the ground.
Around the time of the solstice celebrations – also known as Johanni or mountain fires – the weather forecast for the region around Ehrwald, Tyrol (Austria) promised perfect conditions. An ideal opportunity to capture the unique atmosphere of these alpine nights with the camera.
I chose to spend the night bivouacking at around 2,200 meters, just below the summits of Daniel and Upsspitze. There I found a sheltered spot with a wide view, perfect for an overnight stay.
The image shows the ridge leading up to Mount Daniel in the first light of dawn. In the background, the Wetterstein mountains rise, crowned by the striking Zugspitze – Germany’s highest peak.
A deeply moving moment – to witness the beginning of a new day in silence and clear mountain air, surrounded by this majestic alpine landscape.
There seems to be a ring of fresher flowers around the shrivellling bloom in the center.

The lone tree; lone with the exception of the three photographers, bears witness to an epic sunrise. Llyn Padarn, Snowdonia, North Wales.
Ancient Witnesses
As the stars rise, the stone remains — quiet, enduring, timeless.
These formations have watched the passage of millennia in silence, bearing witness to the slow arc of the cosmos above. I often wonder what stories they’d tell if they could speak — stories of fire, wind, and water… of creatures long gone… and now, of a lone photographer beneath their gaze.
Captured under a moonless sky, this is one of those nights where everything aligns — the air still, the Milky Way rising, and the sense that you’re standing in a place where time barely matters.
I return to these places not just to photograph them, but to feel something deeper — the connection between earth and sky, between the ancient and the now.
