Happy Fence Friday!!
I was watching this guy, along with the Pelican's, clean fish and every so often he would throw them the fish innards and the crowd would go wild ..;) He must do this every evening because we were having dinner in the restaurant next door and I noticed the Pelican's flying in one by one but couldn't figure out why.
The last couple of days were crazy. We had ice everywhere and huge oak limbs were breaking off the trees. These trees are 150 to 200 years old. I figured they could withstand anything but as soon as one of the limbs hit my house I moved my car across the street so I wouldn't be parked under one and sure enough, 2 huge limbs fell right where my car was. I've lived in Texas all my life and have never seen trees limbs break from the weight of ice on them.
Taipei 101 (Chinese: 臺北101; pinyin: Táiběi yī líng yī; stylized as TAIPEI 101), formerly known as the Taipei World Financial Center, is a skyscraper in Taipei, Taiwan. This building was officially classified as the world's tallest from its opening in 2004 until the 2009 completion of the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, UAE. Upon completion, it became the world's first skyscraper to exceed a height of half a kilometer.
The elevators that transport passengers from the 5th to the 89th floor in 37 seconds (attaining 60.6 km/h (37.7 mph)) set speed records.[11] In 2011 Taipei 101 received a Platinum rating under the LEED certification system, becoming the tallest and largest green building in the world.[12][13] The structure regularly appears as an icon of Taipei in international media, and the Taipei 101 fireworks displays are a regular feature of New Year's Eve broadcasts.
Taipei 101's postmodernist architectural style evokes traditional Asian aesthetics in a modern structure employing industrial materials. Its design incorporates a number of features that enable the structure to withstand the Pacific Ring of Fire's earthquakes and the region's tropical storms. The tower houses offices, restaurants, and indoor and outdoor observatories. The tower is adjoined by a multilevel shopping mall that has the world's largest ruyi symbol as an exterior feature.

Civita di Bagnoregio is a town in the Province of Viterbo in central Italy, a suburb of the comune of Bagnoregio.
The town is noted for its striking position atop a plateau of friable volcanic tuff overlooking the Tiber river valley. It is in constant danger of destruction as the edges of the plateau collapse due to erosion, leaving the buildings to crumble as their underlying support falls away. As of 2004, there were plans to reinforce the plateau with steel rods to prevent further geological damage.
The city is also much admired for its architecture spanning several hundred years. Civita di Bagnoregio owes much of its unaltered condition to its relative isolation; the town was able to withstand most intrusions of modernity as well as the destruction brought by two world wars. The population today varies from about 7 people in winter to more than 100 in summer.
The town was placed on the World Monuments Fund's 2006 Watch List of the 100 Most Endangered Sites, because of threats it faces from erosion and unregulated tourism.
Rio-Antirion bridge was at time opening the world's longest cable-stayed bridge. The idea of building this bridge was already in the 19-th century. It was put into service in 2004, just before the opening of the Olympic Games in Athens. It was built in very difficult conditions because it is a place where there are earthquakes, strong winds are blowing, the sea bottom is unstable and the depth reaches 65 meters. The pillars of bridge should also withstand impact of the tanker. The total length of this bridge is 2452 m

Oddano go do użytku w 2004 roku, tuż przed otwarciem olimpiady w Atenach.

This Radio and Television (RTV) Transmitter Tower is situated in the Krvavec Mountains in Slovenia’s Kamnik-Savinja Alps. Around 100 metres high and based at an altitude of 1,740 metres, it is the largest and most important Transmitting Centre in Slovenia, supplying the radio and TV network throughout many parts of the country, as well as international coverage. In fact, it facilitated the first television broadcast ever in Slovenia in 1957.
The tower is of reinforced concrete construction and was built
in the 1980’s, having replaced a former metal tower originally
constructed in 1955. The structure has to withstand hostile
conditions, as it is located in the ski resort of Krvavec and in 1991
it was even bombed by Yugoslav fighter planes during the Ten Day War, otherwise known as the Slovenian Independence War.
This is the last picture I took that rainy evening in the Stotel Forest. Directly behind me is the already mentioned wooden palisade and although it looks very interesting, I decided to use these roots, washed down by the clear water, as a motif instead. I wonder who will withstand this situation - the water or the tree? I don't think we will find out within the next 10 years. Maybe both could coexist in peace and harmony?
Mounds of the Cathedral termites on the dry plains of the Northwest Territory dominate the landscape and often tower more than 15 feet in height. Constructed from mud, plant parts, and termite saliva and feces, the columns of the mound are extraordinarily tough and able to withstand the rigors of wind, rain, heat, and hungry predators. Construction of the hollow columns allows for internal circulation of air from the cooler soil at the base of the mound to the warmer top. This clever ventilation provides a central air-conditioning system that enables the colony to remain relatively cool even when the external temperatures are incredibly hot. (BugOfTheWeek.com)

While little termite mounds are seen all over the Northern Territory, Litchfield National Park has an over-abundance of these massive mounds. This one was at least fifteen feet tall! They are like mini-mountains dotting the savanna-like habitat.

Kopsia is a shrub, woody plant, with ornamental foliage and flowering, still rare in cultivation.
If grown in a tropical climate, it blooms throughout the year, with more abundance in spring and summer. The flowers can be solitary or in small clusters. Its color is a pale, delicate pink, with a red center.
Still not very popular among landscape designers, the copy appears in rare gardens.
It's no lush plant, but its beauty is elegant and it's rustic in handling. It can be grown alone, in groups, rows or together with other species.
Do not plant in temperate climates, as it cannot withstand frost or freezing temperatures. Plants grown in full sun tend to be more compact and flower long.
The Gresham mansion was made of stone, and was sturdy enough to withstand the great hurricane of 1900. The Greshams welcomed hundreds of survivors of the hurricane into their home.
The house was built between 1887 and 1893 by Galveston architect Nicholas J. Clayton for lawyer and politician Walter Gresham, his wife Josephine, and their nine children. In 1923 the Roman Catholic Diocese of Galveston purchased the house, and, situated across the street from the Sacred Heart Church, it served as the residence for Bishop Christopher E. Byrne.
The house is owned by the Galveston Historical Foundation and self-guided tours are available daily. A portion of each admission supports the preservation and restoration of the property.
Carpobrotus acinaciformis

Carpobrotus acinaciformis
is a species of succulent plant in the Aizoaceae family. In French, it is called Witch's Fang, Witch's Claw, Witch's Finger, Fairy Finger, Edible Ficoid or Figuier des Hottentots. Its fruit is edible.
Originally from South Africa, it has been introduced to many other areas of the world, where it has sometimes become naturalized.
It withstands frosts of around -6 to -8°C, but only for a short time and accompanied by correct daytime heating. This plant grows on sandy soils, often on coastal dunes or in the back dune, but it can also be found on the cliffs or rocks of the coast. It often forms large plant carpets that can cover several square meters. Moreover, these flowers have the particularity of closing once night falls. In the shape of a fig, its very fleshy fruits are edible and are very popular in jam, due to their slightly acidic taste. As for its elongated triangular green-gray leaves, they would have anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties. In addition, in its country of origin, the leaves of the sea fig are prescribed as a gargle in the event of mouth ulcers or sore throats.

Built in 1769 as part of Fort Amsterdam in what is now the UNESCO World Heritage City of Willemstad, Curacao, the Fortchurch is a Historic Monument.
It has sturdy walls that were built to withstand any attack. A cannonball imbedded in an exterior wall has been left as a reminder of the attack by the British in 1804 when the Fort was shelled. (Local legend has it that the cannonball was fired from Captain Bligh's infamous Bounty).
The original tower of the Church was octagonal and was replaced by a round one in 1903, which is clearly marked on the facade.

The Space Needle is an observation tower in Seattle, Washington, United States. Considered to be an icon of the city, it has been designated a Seattle landmark. Located in the Lower Queen Anne neighborhood, it was built in the Seattle Center for the 1962 World's Fair, which drew over 2.3 million visitors.
The Space Needle was once the tallest structure west of the Mississippi River, standing at 605 ft (184 m). The tower is 138 ft (42 m) wide, weighs 9,550 short tons (8,660 metric tons), and is built to withstand winds of up to 200 mph (320 km/h) and earthquakes of up to 9.0 magnitude, as strong as the 1700 Cascadia earthquake.
The Space Needle features an observation deck 520 ft (160 m) above ground, providing views of the downtown Seattle skyline, the Olympic and Cascade Mountains, Mount Rainier, Mount Baker, Elliott Bay, and various islands in Puget Sound. Visitors can reach the top of the Space Needle by elevators, which take 41 seconds. On April 19, 1999, the city's Landmarks Preservation Board designated the tower a historic landmark.
I'd usually describe myself as a confident person. Even when I don't talk much, I'm pretty sure and believe in whatever I do. But there are some days, and it's been like this for me for as long as I can remember, that I would get so unsure, so insecure, and doubtful whether I'm enough or not. No matter how 'mindful' I try to be, just the tiniest thing could trigger all those insecurities to surface. Sometimes they don't stay as long, but way too often, those doubts would eat me up; all situations in the past would miraculously come up and convince me that I was no good at all.
It makes me afraid to do the things that I love.
This song "Only The Winds" by Ólafur Arnalds speaks to me somehow. The melodies...the videos...
I'm not sure how you interpret it, but to me, it's about finding the right thing/method to keep you strong enough against the "storms" ... and when you've grown enough... know enough... believe in yourself enough... you've become so strong that you don't need those things anymore.
I am lucky to have friends and family to help me keep myself together whenever I have to withstand those storms. They remind me when I forget who I am or blind to my own good qualities... They are... h e r e.
I believe I have come very far, and I'm learning to be stronger and stronger. Of course, there are those gloomy days sometimes, but no storms can last forever! I may need those strings to hold me up now, but I'm also on my way to not needing them! 💛
... Only the Winds ...

Great Spirit, who exists before you are in every person and every thing, we invite you to come from the distant places in our present existence.
Big Spirit of the North, giving wings in the air of water to flow and rain and snow, covering the earth with the crystal carpet over which every sound is beautiful, we stand in front of you.
Fill us with the strength to withstand the snowstorms and help us to thank you for the beauty that springs from the warm earth when it wakes up.
The Great Spirit of the East, the land that rises in the sun, you hold in your right hand the years of our lives and on the left the opportunities of every day.
Prepare us not to reject your gifts, nor to miss the hope of every day and every year.
The Great Spirit of the South, where your warm breath melts the ice around our heart, its aroma speaks from distant springs and summers, dissolved our fears, melted our hatred, burned our love with the flames of truth.
Teach us that whoever is truly powerful is also polite, whoever is wise is also merciful, whoever is brave is also compassionate.
The Great Spirit of the West, the land that the sun is tilting, with the bare mountains and lawns, bless us with the knowledge of peace and freedom. Teach us that the end is more important than the beginning, and that the sun does not reign in vain every day.
The Great Spirit of the Earth, lord of the metals and the stones, guardian of the treasures of the earth, help us to thank you daily for your countless springs that keep us alive and for your untold beauty!

The Highland is a Scottish breed of rustic cattle. It originated in the Scottish Highlands and the Outer Hebrides islands of Scotland and has long horns and a long shaggy coat. It is a hardy breed, bred to withstand the intemperate conditions in the region.
Highland cattle descend from the Hamitic Longhorn, which were brought to Britain by Neolithic farmers in the second millennium BC, as the cattle migrated northwards through Africa and Europe. Highland cattle were historically of great importance to the economy, with the cattle being raised for meat primarily and sold in England.
The 1885 herd book describes two distinct types of Highland cattle. One was the West Highland, or Kyloe, originating and living mostly in the Outer Hebrides, which had harsher conditions. These cattle tended to be smaller, to have black coats and, due to their more rugged environment, to have long hair. These cattle were named due to the practice of relocating them. The kyles are narrow straits of water, and the cattle were driven across them to get to market.
The other type was the mainland; these tended to be larger because their pastures provided richer nutrients. They came in a range of colours, most frequently dun or red. These types have now been crossbred so that there is no distinct difference.
Since the early 20th century, breeding stock has been exported to many parts of the world, especially Australia and North America.
It is estimated that there are now around 15,000 Highland cattle in the United Kingdom.
My love for you is like the raging sea,
So powerful and deep it will forever be.
Through the storm, wind, and heavy rain,
It will withstand every pain.
Our hearts are so pure and love so sweet.
I love you more with every heartbeat!

The story of the Alamo is a strange story. General Houston told Co-Commanders, Bowie and Travis to abandon the Alamo. They didn't. Santa Anna, much like Napoleon and Waterloo, showed up without his artillery. Unfortunately, for the defenders of the Alamo, Santa's artillery showed up and it was on the 13th day..Hummm. Indeed, an unlucky number that day. If they disobeyed orders, than why are they looked upon as heroes. Because they took the blunt of the attack and slowed Santa Anna down while Houston was busy gathering men to make a stand. Which, is why I speak English and not Spanish..:)) Here's what the Internet says
he Battle of the Alamo (February 23 – March 6, 1836) was a pivotal event in the Texas Revolution. Following a 13-day siege, Mexican troops under President General Antonio López de Santa Anna launched an assault on the Alamo Mission near San Antonio de Béxar (modern-day San Antonio, Texas, United States), killing all of the Texian defenders. Santa Anna's cruelty during the battle inspired many Texians—both Texas settlers and adventurers from the United States—to join the Texian Army. Buoyed by a desire for revenge, the Texians defeated the Mexican Army at the Battle of San Jacinto, on April 21, 1836, ending the revolution.
Several months previously, Texians had driven all Mexican troops out of Mexican Texas. About 100 Texians were then garrisoned at the Alamo. The Texian force grew slightly with the arrival of reinforcements led by eventual Alamo co-commanders James Bowie and William B. Travis. On February 23, approximately 1,500 Mexicans marched into San Antonio de Béxar as the first step in a campaign to retake Texas. For the next 10 days, the two armies engaged in several skirmishes with minimal casualties. Aware that his garrison could not withstand an attack by such a large force, Travis wrote multiple letters pleading for more men and supplies, but the Texians were reinforced by fewer than 100 men.
In the early morning hours of March 6, the Mexican Army advanced on the Alamo. After repelling two attacks, the Texians were unable to fend off a third attack. As Mexican soldiers scaled the walls, most of the Texian soldiers withdrew into interior buildings. Defenders unable to reach these points were slain by the Mexican cavalry as they attempted to escape.
Last autumn I dare to shoot in heavy rain the first time. I admit, that I was a bit tense because of the question, how my technic was going to deal with it. Because even if I did take care of holding away the water as much as I could, everything was quite wet afterwards. Finally my equipment did withstand everything very good and the photos I made that day are speaking for one, or better multiple, repetition.

This castle is located in the middle of the Rhine near the town of Kaub.
At this castle the skippers had to pay toll in order to continue sailing. From this point on, the Rhine narrows significant and squeezes itself trough the valley "Middle Rhine" which is a world heritage from UNESCO. The current in this traject untill the town of Koblenz is very strong and there are treacherous shallows on the rocky bottom and that's why there were also taken river pilots on board.
Note the building of the castle, which has the shape of a ship to withstand the very strong current at high water and ice floes.
.Scientific Name: Nopalea Cochenillifera
.Popular Names: Sweet Palm, Urumbeta
.Family: Cactaceae
.Category: Shrubs, cacti and succulents
.Climate: Equatorial, Mediterranean, Semi-Arid, Subtropical, Tropical
.Origin: North America, Mexico
.Height: 0.9 to 1.2 meters, 1.2 to 1.8 meters, 1.8 to 2.4 meters, 2.4 to 3.0 meters, 3.0 to 3.6 meters, 3.6 to 4.7 meters
Urumbeta is a plant well adapted to the dry climate, like many cactus. Its stem is cylindrical and the branches are the flattened, fleshy and oval, popularly known as "palms" and scientifically for "cladodes." These branches are responsible for photosynthesis of the plant, as the leaves are reduced to small and sparse thorns, absent in some varieties.
This adaptation reduces the perspiration of the plant, which can withstand the lack of water longer. Its flowers appear all year round, but mainly from September to March, and are firm, orange, rosy or red and with numerous pink and long stamens.
Urumbeta is a rustic plant, suitable for isolated planting or in groups, as well as in renques, becoming a very defensive fence when used with specimens with thorns. Its beauty and uniqueness is evidenced in stone gardens. It can also be planted in large vessels, with the substrate covered by little stones.
Curiosity: Young branches and fruits are marketed and consumed as a vegetable in Central American countries. Urumbeta is also used as a food for the growth and reproduction of "cochonilhas" which provide a valuable red industrial dye, and is also recognized for its important forage value in the feeding of ruminants in arid and semi-arid climates.
In the Moscow park "Muzeon" in the evening twilight, a group of young people performed. The costumes are very strange and the pillows are on the heads. They constantly performed various actions devoid of any meaning, but the artists were able to grab my attention. After the performance, I returned home and thought, thought and thought ... and made a conclusion for myself: there is also a lot of absurdity in our everyday life, but I absolutely do not want to look at it.
"Our main goal is to offer the viewer something that will help him live and enjoy life, withstand trials, live his present day meaningfully and with dignity, think about the future and remember the past; which will help him save himself in a world where silence does not always reign. and peace. We will ask questions and seek answers, we will shout, cry or be silent - and we will be happy if our word, tear or silence finds an echo in your heart. " (theater of the absurd)

The Biesbosch forms the estuary of two great European rivers, the Meuse and the Rhine. The rivers flow into the sea via the nature conservation area. Due to its location, the Biesbosch is affected by the tides. This means that the water level varies. At flood tide, the seawater holds back the water from the rivers, and the water level is then at its highest. At ebb tide, the river water flows freely to the sea, so that the water level reaches its lowest point. The difference between the highest at lowest water levels in the Biesbosch used to be two metres. Since the Delta Works were constructed, the tidal variation is only 20 centimetres in the Brabantse Biesbosch and 70 centimetres in the Hollandse Biesbosch.
The ‘Saint Elizabeth Flood’ occurred in 1421. This disastrous flood led to the disappearance of 17 villages. An inland sea stretching from northwest of Dordrecht to southeast of Geertruidenberg was created.
Immediately after the disaster, land fell dry again. The flow of water carried sand and clay, which sank to the bottom. The inland sea became shallower and shallower. Eventually, patches of land emerged from the water at ebb tide and rushes started growing on them. These plants flourish with their roots in the water. People planted extra rushes so they could harvest them. The Biesbosch derives its name from this plant; it means “a forest of rushes”. More land appeared; the roots were less frequently in water, and the rushes were unable to flourish so well. Reeds were able to withstand this condition better and supplanted the rushes, giving rise to vast reed beds. Subsequently, willows started to grow and people used the branches to make furniture and other products. Willows grow better when they get less water, so the people built dikes to prevent the willows being inundated at flood tide. A piece of land with planted willows is called a griend.
Coarse gypsum powder covers some 715 square kilometers (275 square miles) of desert at White Sands National Park. Gypsum is a mineral that normally dissolves in water, but the climate is so dry there that the grains have been preserved.
The gypsum dunes were formed after the evaporation of an ancient sea.
Between the dunes in the interdunal areas of the park, grasses thrive. For plants like Alkali Sacaton, Little Bluestem, and Indian Rice Grass, survival depends on rapid growth, pollination, and reseeding at the far side of the interdunal space. Although an individual plant might perish, its offspring continue to succeed and colonize these areas. *
Seen here is Alkali Sacaton, a widespread grass that can be found in alkaline soils from Canada to Mexico, flourishing in poorly drained depressions where few other grasses can grow. Highly adaptive, it can withstand flooding and partial burial by the shifting sand. It has an important place in the ecosystem of the dune field, where its seeds provide food for birds, rodents, and insects. *

Welcome to winter storm Olive, visiting this week from Canada, which won't leave much snow, but wintry winds and cold. . .though our barn is warm and our chickens well-feathered to withstand some February weather. . .

The ruins of the castle are what remains of the one that was built in the 9th century on the remains of an old fort. The 9th century fortification was maintained until 1073, the year in which it was razed to the ground by Gonzalo de Moscoso, son of a certain Beremundo. After this, its reconstruction was made difficult by the prohibition ordered by King Fernando II in 1180 to build new fortresses in the "Land of Santiago" without the express authorization of the Archbishop of Compostela. It belonged to the Moscoso family from the fifteenth century onwards.
It was again demolished by the Irmandiños in the 15th century (1431-1469), during the revolt and rebuilt in 1471. Curiously, the new walls were already adapted to withstand the impact of gunpowder projectiles. Later it was besieged in 1471, by the troops of the Archbishop of Santiago, under the command of his own brother Luis de Acevedo, without much luck. Since 1480 the castle was inhabited by the 1st Count of Altamira Lope Sánchez de Ulloa y Moscoso Due to his possession he was spared the Battle of Altamira.
The old Zuiderzee dikes turned out not to withstand the high water levels of the old vicious "Zuiderzee". It seems ydillic, but appearances can be deceiving.....
Being alone can be healing for my soul. Being alone can be very painful for my heart. I have experienced both in the last weeks and months. I am torn between the feelings of loneliness that hurts me and the feelings that give me warmth and security. I do not know if all this has to do with my age and my situation? I do not know exactly where I belong right now. In a moment I am sad and tired, in another happy and full of life. What can I do? Withstand? Disappear? Where? I just need distance and tranquility for my soul. But what about my friends, those who need me? My attention, my closeness, my love? Can I just disappear and not take care of them? NO !!! I will not and can not. I just want to give love and be loved so that my soul can breathe. No more and no less.
I love you all, dear flickr friends, who want to accompany me for a time along my way and want to give me a little of your attention and love.
I am so moved by your words here by my little work of love that I must cry. Tears of gratitude and joy, but also tears of compassion and sorrow for those who have not lived so well in the last time. I am connected with you in my thoughts and prayers my dearest friends.
Your friend
Erwin
All this I have told you from my soul, I see in this picture. It makes me so happy, but it makes me from time to time also very sad. This is my inner feeling now. Sorry, but I had to tell you this, because my heart is so heavy at the moment, but I still have a lot of hope.

This pretty plant is Sedum, also known as stonecrop. It is a perennial succulent that blooms midsummer to fall. The flowers are star-shaped and in clusters. The plant’s succulent leaves store water so they can withstand drought conditions. They attract butterflies and it is said that they are deer resistant. Happy Macro Monday.
This is how it’s looking like, when a photographer is refusing to be overrun by a car during a long exposure. I withstand running away as long as possible, but it was not long enough. What was first looking like a failed try (one of five, by the way) turned out to be my favourite version at the end, at least from that serie. Even if its not the jackpot from the artistic point of view, this shot from the Schwerin Castle is for sure something special.

Thanks for your visit. Comments, faves and invitations are very appreciated.
Dead coolibahs, Eucalyptus coolabah. Coolibahs are Australian trees that normally grow near freshwater. However, their roots cannot withstand being waterlogged for a long period. These trees died after a very wet, wet season when the water did not recede for a long time. Taken in the Gulf, the Northern Territory.
