Some rock pinnacles seem to withstand the test of time and ocean. This cove was pretty weathered with all the rocks worn down to water level, except for this last outcrop.
One Damselfly that is said to be able to withstand mild pollution and can sometimes be found some distance away from water. Can be seen from late May to early September.

The wind was strong enough that it was difficult to steady my camera, so I used my iPhone camera. Waves crashed over the edge of the Charlevoix South Pier. To withstand the wave action, the Charlevoix South Pier Light was rebuilt using steel to replace the wood in the year 1948.
The Japanese ornamental apricot withstands temperatures below -15 °C. It is a real early bloomer that is already blooming in my garden.

These hardy owls tolerate extreme cold-and-wind conditions by puffing up like this one and using tail and wings to remain stable in the wind. More than any other species of owl, hawkies have pressed the limits of my hands' ability to withstand freezing cold.
Only on rare occasions have I seen them fly into woods to escape the harshest cold and wind.
Some sunflowers can attain great heights with large sunny yellow heads. So an obvious reason for drooping heads is simply top-heavy sunflowers. If this is the case, there’s no fixing drooping sunflowers. Top-heavy sunflowers are a natural occurrence just as overladen fruit boughs bend under the weight of a plentiful harvest. If all else is well with the plant and it is healthy, the stalk should be able to withstand the weight without splitting.

While hiking along the waterfalls of Geiranger Norway I was lucky to spot Norway's national bird (since 1963) - - the White-Throated Dipper.
He was diving in and out of the water collecting some food - - looked like some sort of larvae that spawns in the water it seemed - - really wasn't sure.
He is also known locally as the river priest, and has other names such as beck bessy,and bessy dooker. He is a non-migratory bird who can withstand the extreme cold as long as he finds some open water (hence his love for fast flowing rivers and waterfalls)

In the 19th century the flour mills in Vejer were water driven. The best known is located in the Santa Lucía area of Vejer. Windmills were constructed on the ridge which were able to withstand the strong easterly gusts. The four windmills that remain in the San Miguel district on the edge of the village were built in the 1960s and have since been restored.

I went back to the ice factory, toghether with a couple of photographer friends and beautiful model Jimena Alarcon. We took a bunch of shots in the ice storage room, which was below freezing temperature so you can imagine she was pretty cold when we did this! She managed to withstand it though, and then some... really a delight to work with her. Will definitely post some more stuff later...

The Greenland Dog is similar to the Canadian Eskimo Sleddog.
Eskimo dogs that originated in Greenland, Greenland Dogs are heavy dogs with high endurance but little speed. They are frequently used by people offering dog sled adventures and long expeditions. Most people in Greenland favor dog sled teams over snowmobiles as the dog sled teams are more reliable. It has a thick stand-off outer coat and dense under wool, which allows it to withstand constant outdoor living in temperatures that can reach -60° Celcius.

Subsequently, willows started to grow and people used the branches to make furniture and other products. Willows grow better when they get less water, so the people built dikes to prevent the willows being inundated at flood tide. A piece of land with planted willows is called a griend.

Located south of Winchester Bay, OR, this area is home to the tallest sand dunes in the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. Umpqua Beach #2 Day Use and OHV Staging Area provides parking and access for pedestrian beach access as well as off-highway vehicle (OHV) staging for open sand riding opportunities in the Umpqua (ump - kwah) dunes. A ride to the top of a tall dune offers spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean.
We were over in the area to view the King Tides, which didn't appear this day. So we filled our time exploring the many back roads along the coast and beaches we had never seen before. The day was a bit windy and rain rolled through occasionally, but this just added to "charm" of the place. After a little research I found that Oregon choose to plant European Beach Grass because it could withstand the Oregon weather better.

Much of the Biesbosch is covered by water and is therefore lush with sedges and reed beds. A common plant is the marsh marigold, which blooms in the spring. This member of the buttercup family has adapted to the tidal movements. In the willow forests you can find many plants such as stinging nettles, orange balsam, yellow iris, cow parsley, hogweed, enchanter’s nightshade and amaranths growing luxuriantly. The Himalayan Balsam provides a real jungle-like atmosphere. Its pink flowers have a characteristic sweet fragrance.

Both the burn (stream) and I were heading right to left, and both of us were getting forced back by the incredibly strong wind funnelling up the valley, For about 200-300 yards I had to stop frequently & turn side-on to the wind to withstand the strongest gusts. Exhilarating you might say!

Lagangarbh Hut is situated north of Buachaille Etive Mor near the River Coupall. It is owned by the National Trust for Scotland and has been occupied and maintained by the Club since 1946. It was extensively refurbished in 1994.
The hut is a former crofters cottage that is now owned by the National Trust for Scotland and is available to rent for visitors who really do want to get away from it all.
Typically with central entrance hall and stairs ahead, two rooms up and down, left and right. The roofing is still the local Ballachulish slate which covered much of Scottish housing. The walls are of thick stone, built to withstand the battering of gales.

Rio-Antirion bridge was at time opening the world's longest cable-stayed bridge. The idea of building this bridge was already in the 19-th century. It was put into service in 2004, just before the opening of the Olympic Games in Athens. It was built in very difficult conditions because it is a place where there are earthquakes, strong winds are blowing, the sea bottom is unstable and the depth reaches 65 meters. The pillars of bridge should also withstand impact of the tanker. The total length of this bridge is 2452 m

The Highland is a Scottish breed of rustic cattle. It originated in the Scottish Highlands and the Outer Hebrides islands of Scotland and has long horns and a long shaggy coat. It is a hardy breed, bred to withstand the intemperate conditions in the region.
Highland cattle descend from the Hamitic Longhorn, which were brought to Britain by Neolithic farmers in the second millennium BC, as the cattle migrated northwards through Africa and Europe. Highland cattle were historically of great importance to the economy, with the cattle being raised for meat primarily and sold in England.
The 1885 herd book describes two distinct types of Highland cattle. One was the West Highland, or Kyloe, originating and living mostly in the Outer Hebrides, which had harsher conditions. These cattle tended to be smaller, to have black coats and, due to their more rugged environment, to have long hair. These cattle were named due to the practice of relocating them. The kyles are narrow straits of water, and the cattle were driven across them to get to market.
The other type was the mainland; these tended to be larger because their pastures provided richer nutrients. They came in a range of colours, most frequently dun or red.[6] These types have now been crossbred so that there is no distinct difference.
Since the early 20th century, breeding stock has been exported to many parts of the world, especially Australia and North America.
It is estimated that there are now around 15,000 Highland cattle in the United Kingdom.
Olympic National Park is home to a temperate rain forest with old growth trees, like this western red cedar, which have grown and protected the area for hundreds of years.
The thick bark on these trees can withstand fire and allows them to thrive in a myriad of conditions. The 12-14 feet of rain the area receives each year helps keep these trees well nourished. The mosses, ferns and lichens create a jungle-like atmosphere that seems out of place so far north.

I was watching this guy, along with the Pelican's, clean fish and every so often he would throw them the fish innards and the crowd would go wild ..;) He must do this every evening because we were having dinner in the restaurant next door and I noticed the Pelican's flying in one by one but couldn't figure out why.
The last couple of days were crazy. We had ice everywhere and huge oak limbs were breaking off the trees. These trees are 150 to 200 years old. I figured they could withstand anything but as soon as one of the limbs hit my house I moved my car across the street so I wouldn't be parked under one and sure enough, 2 huge limbs fell right where my car was. I've lived in Texas all my life and have never seen trees limbs break from the weight of ice on them.
