Up close with an Australian icon. The Redback Spider (Latrodectus hasselti), feared by early settlers, was historically responsible for 12 deaths . An antivenom has been available since 1956, and there have been no deaths directly due to redback bites since its introduction. The female spider, as seen in this shot, is much larger then its male counterpart and has the distinctive red stripe on its abdomen. The female 'digests' the male during a successful mating process, which seems to be unique to Latrodectus hasselti. Females reach around 1 cm in size while males are 3-4 mm when mature. Love Life, Love Photography
A ring-necked duck floating around Pond 6 with purpose. A poorly named duck. In just the right light you can see a faint chestnut-colored ring around the base of its neck. Not a great mark to identify this species in the field, but according the the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the ring around the neck stood out to a 19th century biologist that described the species using dead specimens. I've never seen a dead one, so I'll have to take their word for it.

The Gorsselse Heide is a nature reserve in the Dutch municipality of Lochem, located between Eefde, Gorssel and Harfsen. It is about 110 hectares and is mainly covered with heather, coniferous and deciduous forest. There are a number of fens in the area.
2TE116UM locomotive with a heavy-weight wood-loaded train passing through Kharaa river valley and Schatan mountains. This place is one of the highlighted morning photo spots of Monrailpic's every tour in any season.

Silently gliding through the water, graceful and majestic, keeping close to its partner and their usual nesting place. I hope that their cygnets will be safe this year, and not fall prey to heron or fox like a few of them did last year.
