What I most wanted to capture when I was about to take this shot was the flower cluster of Indian Blanket and Evening Primrose. But then I noticed the huge tanker silently approaching and was intrigued with its rather unusual name (for a boat). While I was fully aware of the tanker, a guy walking by and a woman on a park bench were so busy on their phones that they didn't seem to notice a thing!

The ship is sailing along the Fraser River towards the Strait of Georgia and the Pacific Ocean. It's always amazing when a ship of this size ploughs past Garry Point Park in Steveston, Richmond. I hear that once the George Massey Tunnel further east of this point is replaced with a 10 lane bridge, even larger oil tankers will be charging up the river, I presume to the port at New Westminster.

Will that be wisdom for our fairly pristine environment?

Looking back, I guess we all review at this time in the hope of improving our lot next year. This was taken January 2013. It seems like a forever ago but serves as a warning to prepare for a tough winter ahead.

Wisdom and Strength

About thirty years ago I visited an antiques market in England and bought a tiny little bronze figure. This elephant I was told is the metaphor for luck, strength and wisdom.

“It’s Ganesha”, the gentleman said. „In India, where I come from, this is a very important god and a son of the powerful Shiva. When Ganesha was a little child Shiva cut his head off by accident and put the head of an elephant on his shoulders. This is why Shivas’ son wears the head of an elephant. And maybe this is why Shiva is called a destroyer.”

He looked at me in a curious way.

Maybe I answered: “Poor son…” or something like that. But I remember exactly what he said: „Only the beaten and defeated become wise.“ He smiled. “Ganesha is my friend. He is pure heart, pure bliss. I adore his company so much. My grandfather was riding an elephant and often I watched him cleaning Ganesh after work in the river near by. They loved each other so deeply. My grandmother was jealous…“

I still keep this figure in honour. Meanwhile I have half a dozen figures in my house and a big Ganesha statue in my garden. But the most important thing is: Now Ganesha lives in my heart. Sometimes my wife is… okay, not really.

Dedicated to an Indian Gentleman I met long ago… and to all antique dealers.

The picture of this elephant I took two years ago when I visited the Borobudur Temple in Java, Indonesia. He was doing his service there. The buddhist monk and the sky and everything is put together with photoshop of course. But I am very happy with the result.

Thank you my friends for all your comments and invites. Even if I cannot post this picture to some groups (Germans are restricted to see groups 18+) and other reasons (time), I do appreciate your comments and invites very much.

In 1989 our son was backpacking through Europe and happened to be in Berlin as the wall began to come down. The wisdom? In his recognizing that a dirty lump of cement had historic value, and more broadly in Reagan's "Mr Gorbachev, tear down this wall".

When you close your eyes and go deep into your thoughts you can make the circles of wisdom come true

Years ago, we saw on a weekend hut in Dolomites a plate with amusing inscription. Then I learned that it originates from Ascoli Piceno, from the year 1529. This June we visited the place. The inscription above the door says:

CHI PO NON VO,

CHI VO NON PO,

CHI SA NON FA,

CHI FA NON SA,

ET COSI

IL MONDO MAL VA.

A rough translation into English would be:

Those who can don't want to,

those who want to can't,

those who know don't do,

those who do don't know,

and so

the world goes wrong.

You can amuse yourself translating it into your language.

In Slovenian it would be:

Kdor more, noče,

kdor hoče, ne more,

kdor zna, ne naredi,

kdor naredi, ne zna

in tako

gre svet narobe.

Ralph Waldo Emerson. The happiest man is he who learns from nature the lesson of worship.

Barred Owl on an early morning walk in the woods.

I've wondered if owls are actually as wise as they're reputed to be .... apparently not! It's quite easy to train a surprising array of wild birds (including my good friends, Harry, the heron and Sally, the egret) to respond to a certain food stimulus, but not owls.

Apparently, as with people, we think they're wise because they look smart. It's their eyes ... an owl's eyes are enormous compared to the size of its head. In humans, large pupils are equated with focusing and attention being paid. An owl's eyes are also fixed in its head. In order for an owl to move its eyes, it must move the whole head which gives an owl an intelligent gaze as it scans the surroundings.

Perhaps the earliest known link between owls and wisdom is their association with Athena. The Greek goddess of wisdom is often depicted holding an owl. Because of their close kinship with the night, owls are also associated with magic and witchcraft. Merlin was known to have an owl, and in the Harry Potter series, young wizards communicate by owl messengers instead of instant messengers. Nice trade off...:-)

Say to wisdom:

“You are my sister”; and may you call understanding itself “Kinswoman,” Proverbs 7:4. I find it interesting that the Good Book refers to wisdom as a woman. I tell you true, I strive to be that woman. Oh, I found these pretty little flowers while hiking in the Great Smoky Mountains.

“Wisdom is your perspective on life, your sense of balance, your understanding of how the various parts and principles apply and relate to each other. It embraces judgment, discernment, comprehension. It is a gestalt or oneness, and integrated wholeness.” – Stephen R. Covey

Finding a large enough stick always seems to help get one’s life balanced, and if not it can make a big splash.

“Never mistake knowledge for wisdom. One helps you make a living; the other helps you make a life.”

Veteran SGT Raymond McClintoch shares some wisdom P-I Mike Kranston, a boot in the Rampart division. The boot has no one to ride with tonight so he's stuck with the SGT for morning watch.

-

"You're riding with me tonight. You will drive. I want our windows down and the AC on full blast. Drive smooth, not fast. Smooth is fast. Fast is not smooth. I take my coffee black and you will buy tonight's fill. Take the job seriously, don't take yourself seriously. If another officer needs backup, you drop anything you're doing and go--no hesitation and we drive balls to the walls to get there. Watch your six, have my back and don't talk during the tour unless it's about the situation we are going to. Got it?"
