Milwaukee, WI (Milwaukee County)

Milwaukee is the largest city in the state of Wisconsin and the fifth-largest city in the Midwestern United States. The seat of Milwaukee County, the city is located on Lake Michigan's southwestern shore and was incorporated in 1846. As of the U.S. Census Bureau's July 1, 2019 estimate, Milwaukee had a population of 590,157, making it the 31st largest city in the United States and the fourth-largest city situated along one of the Great Lakes.

The first large wave of settlement to the areas that would later become Milwaukee County and the City of Milwaukee began in 1835, following removal of the tribes in the Council of Three Fires. Early that year it became known that Juneau and Kilbourn intended to lay out competing town-sites. By the year's end both had purchased their lands from the government and made their first sales. There were perhaps 100 new settlers in this year, mostly from New England and other Eastern states. On September 17, 1835, the first election was held in Milwaukee; the number of votes cast was 39. Sitting along a Northern Wisconsin river on a pleasant summer's afternoon is nothing short of dreamlike, with the only sound being the songs of the local birds and the thoughts in one's mind.

Summer 2019

Saturday we took rural roads to do a bit of "leaf peeping" (looking at autumn colors). All of the photos were taken while driving because our COVID-19 numbers are one of the highest in our nation. It's fortunate that Lori enjoys driving rural roads and has patience with my photography-from -a moving-car attempts.

Hope you all have a nice day. Thank you for stopping by.

For what for the fourth of July has now turned into an everyday amusement park. The fourth of July fireworks have been said to be cancel, however people still enjoy the carousel as a way to have some form of celebration. On this carousel are a variety of brightly colored horses, cartoon characters and benches for those who just want to enjoy a minimal motion ride. Even though all seems so gloomy with all the problems, we would like to wish everyone a safe and memorable Summer.

I guess that the rider was a bit premature in thinking that Spring meant riding weather. Yes, there was heavy snow falling at the moment of photo capture that caused the image to appear blurry.

Another shot of this blackpoll warbler on one of the hornbeam saplings. You can see the bugs it was eating all over the tiny trunk. He and his mate gorged themselves to keep going on their migration to northern Canada.

Taken along a road going North from Chicago to Mayville, Wisconsin.

I don't recall ever seeing an Ohio farm that looked this well maintained.

The people I was riding with were in a pretty big hurry and so we rarely stopped. When we finally did, I took advantage of the few minutes to take a few shots. The trip was great, but I would have preferred to be on a photo safari where we had plenty of time to explore and take some shots of all the cool things we saw along the way. I've learned that is what happens when you travel with non photographers or are in a hurry. You just have to do what you have to do and be happy that at least you have a chance to travel to new places.

Canadian Pacific local G64 crosses the frozen Crawfish River at Hubbleton, Wisconsin on January 6, 2018 - utilizing traffic rights on the Wisconsin & Southern to reach the ballast pit near Waterloo.

I decided to take a little break before posting more photos of the southwest.

Yesterday, I spent a good part of the day inside my garage sorting out things for our move. After finishing up that project, I decided to venture out in the sun and blue skies in the direction of Black River Marsh. It was good to get out in nature, away from dust, dimness, and possessions. This trio of photos captured some of the feathered friends that I encountered.

This redwing blackbird was just hanging out on the edge of the marsh boardwalk and wasn't at all concerned by my presence.

I took a lot of shots of the Wisconsin, and looking back I appreciate the different views and angles.

I hope to visit one of its sister ships, New Jersey, at some point in the future.

I had to drive close to an hour on icy county roads with occasional detours due to road closures to get to this location. It was worth it.

Having traded its cascade green and black for H3 paint many years ago, BNSF 1850 sorts cars at 28th street yard while a loaded coal train slowly pulls towards LST&T Junction and the MERC coal dock.

Here's another scene I never tired of, every season of the year. We have since moved, but I think I would move back there in a minute, if given the chance! Such a beautiful state, and so peaceful. Gotta love country living! Hope you enjoy!

The Dells of the Wisconsin River, also called the Wisconsin Dells (from French dalles, or narrows), is a 5-mile (8-km) gorge on the Wisconsin River in south-central Wisconsin, USA. It is noted for its scenic beauty, in particular for its unique Cambrian sandstone rock formations and tributary canyons.

The cliffs, some over 100 feet (30 m) high, and side canyons are closed to the public to protect sensitive ecological features. The viewing of the rock formations by water is a popular tourist attraction in the area. The nearby city of Wisconsin Dells is the center of summer tourist activity, much of it in the form of the theme parks unrelated to the river features.

The Dells was formed during the last ice age approximately 15,000 years ago, although the rock itself is much older, dating from the Cambrian approximately 510-520 million years ago when the area of Wisconsin was at the bottom of a shallow sea.

Approximately 19,000 years ago, the Dells was at the extreme eastern margin of the continental glacier. However, the Dells itself was never covered by glacial ice sheets - it was part of the large Driftless Area that was bypassed by the ice. The melting of the glacier formed Glacial Lake Wisconsin, a lake about the size of Great Salt Lake in Utah and as deep as 150 feet (45 m). The lake was held back by an ice dam of the remaining glacier. The eventual bursting of the ice dam unleashed a catastrophic flood, dropping the lake's depth to 50 feet (15 m) and cutting deep, narrow gorges and unusual rock formations into the sandstone seen today.

I hadn't visited Kohler-Andrae State Park (Wisconsin) since before our Florida trip. As there was no storm or severe wind chill, I decided to do a little exploration this morning. The park has many different ecosystems-I wandered along the dunes that overlook the western shore of lake Michigan. There were no woodland creatures about, but there was faint sunlight and beautiful snowy landscapes to appreciate.

I chose to shoot winter in b&w.

My first attempt at a portrait and I discovered they have some iridescence in their plumage. Could be for breeding season or all the time, but it's quite pretty. Looks to have some mites on its face as well.
