My in-law has been sending me emails asking for suggestions on how to improve the wireless internet connection in their house. I asked where the router was located, and where the computer having the trouble was located. The two were probably no more than 15 feet from one another. On different floors of the house.
I couldn’t imagine a router that would perform so poorly, so I asked her to send me a photo of it so I could figure out the brand. When I got these photos I kept looking for an antenna.
I was able to read the model number off the second photo. After looking it up (it’s a Motorola SB5100) I realized they didn’t have wireless after all. They have been apparently using some nearby wireless network, thinking they were using their own.
Geeks love well intentioned folks like this. Gives us stuff to talk about over a beer!

I have been wanting to do a self portait for various online profiles for a while, but have only just got around to it.
Having now got this shot, I officially declare that it is really difficult to shoot self portraits, let alone at f1.8 with the expectation of getting my eyes in focus, however it is done! The following variables have to be managed:
- lighting (the easiest bit, took a few minutes once I got the lighting stands setup)
- exposure (little tricky since I had to use ISO50 and all speedlights lights at their lowest setting...
- composition (straigthtforward with a tripod and seat)
- focus (manual focus, really hard knowing how far to lean forward/back since depth of field appears to be about 1/2cm @ f1.8)
- hair (not too messy, not long since hair cut)
- face (spots, stubble etc.)
- facial expression
Strobist:
- 4 speedlights, all wirelessly triggered, all set to their lowest manual setting
- 40cm softbox just out of frame to left and right of my face
- boomed light gelled red above my head shooting onto back wall
- light on the floor in front of me giving a bit of fill
Basically I think it is mostly luck trying to co-ordinate all that, so I am pretty happy with this result. Took about 20 goes to get the focus and the face acceptable. Yes, I have done a little re-touching in photoshop, but not much. I don't apologise for that.

The federal Alaska Engineering Commission constructed a building in 1917 in Anchorage for radio communications, known as the Wireless Station, to facilitate building the government's Alaska Railroad. Anchorage had been selected in 1915 to be one of the AEC's major construction camps. The Wireless Station's radio receiving and transmitting system initially had a 500-mile radius, but soon was upgraded to connect with Seattle and the rest of the world. In 1921 the government allowed private citizens access to the system to send messages. The federal government's Washington-Alaska Military Cable and Telegraph System, of which the Wireless Station in Anchorage became a part in 1923 after the railroad was completed, became the Alaska Communication System in 1936. The Anchorage Wireless Station could reach ships at sea. In addition, its cupola served as a beacon for captains to locate the port of Anchorage. In 1950 ACS did its last upgrading of the station's buildings. A few years later it closed the station. The three buildings of the Wireless Station stand as an excellent example of a federal government agency's complex that provided essential communication service for a major construction project then for the residents of Anchorage from 1917 to 1950.

This is a fairly rough photostitch of 3 photos taken from the summit of Wireless Hill in Ardross, Western Australia, Australia. That is Perth City skyline on the right, and all the water is the Swan River Estuary.
This place surprised me even though I had been aware of it's existence as a picnic spot and Telecommunications Museum for many years. The site has a quite extensive area of bushland with a good variety of trees and shrubs and many wildflowers. There is also a large number of birds including several species that I have not seen in my usual haunts around the Canning River.
