Volk van Laaf
The People of Laaf is an attraction in Marerijk. It was designed by Ton van de Ven and opened its doors in 1990. It is a small village, called “Lavelaer”, inhabited by the so-called “Laafs” ("Laven" in Dutch). The visitors can walk through the village and enter the houses, among which a bakery, a brewery, a windmill and a nursery and watch the Laafs do their normal daily activities. A monorail of 450 meters in length runs through the village at an altitude of about 3 meters. In the early years you had to pedal the monorail. This was discontinued because of the possibility of "crashing" into each other. Furthermore, if you stop pedaling, the ride would be blocked for other visitors.
For the children there are slides and distorting mirrors. Little statues of Laaf people doing all kinds of activities are for sale in the souvenir shops in Efteling, but also in several garden centres.
The fairytale behind the Laven, which can be seen in the Loerhuys, recounts that during the winter before the 1990 season the Laven had built their settlement in the Efteling after a long, harsh journey through the earth. Many years ago the Laven lived on the North Pole. When the ice and the incessant snowstorms began, the people fled, led by the father of the Laven, the Great Laaf, and his wife, the Mother's Mother Lot. They could not go in any other direction than through the ground, and so the Laven began to dig. During the trip, the Great Laaf laid the Great Lead; lovingly the Laven made a picture of him and they took that on their further journey through the earth. After an adventurous journey that lasted for centuries, they finally ended up in the Efteling after they heard shouting their motto "Alaaf!".

Winter Efteling 2023
The Winter Efteling takes place from November 24, 2023 to February 4, 2024. New this year are the life-size snow globes on the Ton van de Venplein and in Ruigrijk. Get in there and let it snow! That produces a real winter picture. This winter you will also see the elves from Droomvlucht on the Ton van de Venplein. They brought a music box.
Also new are the special luminous butterflies that Sander de Bruijn, chief designer of Efteling, designed last year in collaboration with ASML for the GLOW light festival. Parts of the light project 'Connecting your love' can be admired during Winter Efteling.
The Playground will also change into the attractive Warm Winter Meadow this year. Enter through the gate and discover extra entertainment and a heart-warming musical offering every day. Take a picture with Pardoes at the sleigh and Fay the Fairy and Pinocchio make it snow. Or listen to the polyphonic music of Zang en Happy. Warm up at the Bonfires, play games at the various chalets, enjoy delicious winter treats and browse through the winter souvenirs. Or skate a round on the larger skating rink in the open air.

De Kleine Zeemeermin (Est. 1970), it's a fairy tale about a little mermaid who falls in love with a handsome human prince and longs for him so much that she makes a deal with an evil sea witch. It is a fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen. The statue was originally designed by Anton Pieck and modeled by Ton van de Ven.
It's striking that she wears more clothes in the winter. And perhaps even more special during the hot summers when she's the only one in this park showing bare breasts...
