Pagode

Pagoda (or "Pagode" in Dutch) is an unobtrusive variation of an observation tower in the Efteling amusement park in the Netherlands. It was designed by Ton van de Ven and started operating in 1987.

The Pagoda, developed by Intamin as a flying island, is described by Efteling as a "flying temple".

It consists of a 155 tons weighing cabin and a 225-ton hydraulic arm which pivots it from the ground up to a height of 60 metres.

The counterweight of 340 tons sinks 30 metres into the ground.

To maintain the balance of the cabin itself the weight of the 100 visitors is distributed over its two sides.

The rotating cabin has a 15 metre high pagoda on top of it.

Etymology studies indicated that the word pagoda means tomb in Thai (ธาตุเจดีย). Preoccupied with upsetting a whole nation, as with Fata Morgana, Efteling choose the Dutch word "pagode" as the ride name.

Ride length: 4 minutes

Ride capacity: 1500 passengers/ hour

Cost: €3.6 million

Winter Efteling 2023

The Winter Efteling takes place from November 24, 2023 to February 4, 2024. New this year are the life-size snow globes on the Ton van de Venplein and in Ruigrijk. Get in there and let it snow! That produces a real winter picture. This winter you will also see the elves from Droomvlucht on the Ton van de Venplein. They brought a music box.

Also new are the special luminous butterflies that Sander de Bruijn, chief designer of Efteling, designed last year in collaboration with ASML for the GLOW light festival. Parts of the light project 'Connecting your love' can be admired during Winter Efteling.

The Playground will also change into the attractive Warm Winter Meadow this year. Enter through the gate and discover extra entertainment and a heart-warming musical offering every day. Take a picture with Pardoes at the sleigh and Fay the Fairy and Pinocchio make it snow. Or listen to the polyphonic music of Zang en Happy. Warm up at the Bonfires, play games at the various chalets, enjoy delicious winter treats and browse through the winter souvenirs. Or skate a round on the larger skating rink in the open air.

De Zes Dinaren

The Six Servants (Dutch: De Zes Dinaren) is a fairy tale about a prince who, with the help of six servants, is able to win the hand of a princess with a special gift. The story was recorded by the brothers Grimm in 1819 for their Kinder- und Hausmärchen under the title "Die Sechs Diener". In the Netherlands, the fairy tale is mainly known by Langnek's prominent presence in the Efteling.

In the Efteling it is the third depiction on the route in the Sprookjesbos, between the Kabouterdorp and Roodkapje. The servant Langnek has been sitting on a rock since the opening of the Sprookjesbos in 1952, stretches his neck and looks calmly around. The original design is by Anton Pieck, but the giant has had transformations over the years, mainly under the direction of Ton van de Ven. In addition to the iconic figure, since 1967, the portrayal of the fairy tale is also from a gallery with the bust of another servant from the fairy tale: Kogeloog. Under the shelter are the portraits of all six servants from the title. The story is told by Peter Reijnders.

The fairy tale opens with Langnek as one of the first 10 attractions in the Sprookjesbos (Fairytale Forest) on May 31, 1952. He then has a rather small head and a rough face that resembles a coarse woodcut. He looks very strict, almost sad for himself.

This was one of the last possibilities this year to take a photo like this. Due to the increasing number of covid infections with a new potentially more dangerous variant, the Netherlands has introduced an evening lockdown from November 28, whereby all catering, shops and events must close at 5 p.m. Also the Efteling, which has to bring its opening time forward to 17h00.

But, it's only her heart that melts for Kendrik. Kendrik's mother the Fire Queen used to say that the 'World of Snow' would quickly put out his fire, but Jelka's heart is on fire because of Jelka.

Droomvlucht 18/12/2017 17h16

The beautiful illuminated entrance of Droomvlucht, Dreamflight in English. All for the Winter Efteling.

Droomvlucht

Droomvlucht ("Dreamflight" in English) is a dark ride in Efteling amusement park in the Netherlands. It was designed by Ton van de Ven, built by Translift and opened in 1993.

In Droomvlucht, the visitors fly through a dream world of forests, castles, fairies, trolls and other fairy-tale-like creatures and scenes. The visitors are seated in small open cabins hanging from the ceiling. The ride takes them past five different scenes in about six minutes: the Castle Realm, the Wondrous Forest, the Fairy Garden, Heavenly Strongholds and the Squelch Forest.

The speed and height of the individual cabins vary throughout the ride, with a climax in the troll marshes at the end, where the cabins come to a seeming free-fall in a spiral downwards from 13 meters of height.

Efteling wanted to present Droomvlucht in 1992, for the 40-year anniversary of the park, which coincided with the opening of Disneyland Park (Paris). However, due to problems with the seating cabins it was not ready until 1993. Due to this problem, the ride cost €4.5 million more than was estimated, bringing the total costs up to €12.5 million, the most expensive attraction at Efteling to that day.

FACTS & FIGURES

- Ride length: 425 metres in 6 minutes

- Height: 17 metres

- Capacity: 1800 persons/hour

- Maximum speed: 20 km/h

- 48 fairies, 10 trolls, 38 animals, 1 million flowers, 1.5 million plants and 3.8 million leaves

Due to the ride’s popularity, the original entry was moved from the thematic hall to a standard queue line. The original entry hall is still in use for special events. The ride starts with some animatronics. Integration between the scenes consists of scarcely lit tunnels with ambient music.

- The Castle Realm

The dream begins upon entering the Castle Realm. Four lighted castles float against the evening glow. The hazy realm also has a waterfall and a smell of moist vegetation.

- The Wondrous Forest

The forest is filled with fairies and creatures that look like fauns, but because of the lack of goat-like legs they appear to be satyrs. Another one is a troll-like creature, the Squelch, here playing a harp. Behind a magic fairy a satyr can be seen bathing in the nude, and above him is a unicorn.

- The Fairy Garden

In this garden fairies can be seen paddling and swinging, while others watch the visitor from branches on all sides. A deer is quenching her thirst. The troll king Oberon is waving the guests out, into a long tunnel with stars.

- Heavenly Strongholds

In this scene there are several moons and strongholds circling each other against a starlit sky. The moons are urbanized with magical cities. Several giant lighted strongholds are floating in the latter part of the scene.

- Squelch Forest

The last scene spirals 13 meters down into a rain forest, populated by trolls and squelches who are enjoying themselves in the rain. A troll comes at the car when at ground level. Some elves, trolls and squelches conclude the ride.

The music for Dreamflight – for each scene a different theme - was composed by Ruud Bos, who also wrote the musical themes for (among other attractions) Fata Morgana, Vogel Rok and Villa Volta.

Spookslotplein 08/12/2020 17h54

The square behind the Spookslot (Haunted Castle) 6 minutes before the closing of the park.

The Spookslotplein or Witte Walvisplein is the square that is located at the rear of the Spookslot, not to be confused with the square at the front, which is often called that way.

When we enter the square from the Spookslot tunnel, we see clockwise: a toilet group, De Witte Walvis catering point with a small garden and a clock by Jonas from the Wallevis. Next to it the roof of the former sales point Bij Jonas and the exit of the Spookslot. De Witte Walvis has a beautiful terrace with round picnic tables, located in the shade of the many trees, and its own Holle Bolle Gijs: Matroos Gijs (Sailor Gijs).

Although the Spookslot is a dominating building on this square, the ghost theme is not predominant, unlike the front. Not only is the castle seen from this side a lot less threatening and ruinous than at the entrance, but for the surroundings a maritime theme has been chosen. Starting with the catering industry themed around Jonas in the Wallevis, this theme continues through Sailor Gijs into the present-day Pirañaplein and the restaurant Het Seylend Fregat. This dates back to before the construction of the Piraña, when the Rowing and Canoe pond was located here, to which the maritime connected seamlessly.

One of the last performances of "De Efteling Lichtpuntjes" in the Warme Winter Meadow. Efteling has decided on November 30, 2020 to immediately stop offering musical entertainment. The reason is the commotion that arose after the publication of a video with party Efteling visitors. There were countless angry reactions.

"We have noticed that we do not have enough control over the behavior of our guests at a number of locations, despite all the crowd controllers and measures. We are now thinking about possible additional measures for the weekend." (The Efteling)

Winter Efteling 2022-2023

For the 24th time in a row, the amusement park has been transformed into a true winter paradise with crackling bonfires, atmospheric garlands and thousands of lights. Various Efteling residents, such as Langnek and Holle Bolle Gijs, have been given a winter jacket. Attractions and fairy tales are attractively decorated and beautifully lit. This year, the Warme Winter Weide, a nostalgic winter meadow with catering and entertainment, has been expanded with an open air skating rink (this is back after two years of covid). It is also a winter full of warmth and cosiness this year. Winter Efteling is from November 14, 2022 to March 5, 2023. With a Warm Winter Meadow, entertainment and winter drinks and snacks.

During Winter Efteling you will meet Efteling residents in the park every day. At the Carnival Festival Square you go on an adventure with Jokie and Jet. We celebrate Kabouter Ko's birthday in the Open Air Theater in the Fairytale Forest. Near the construction site of Danse Macabre, Virginie and Otto Charlatan tell their story. They are still searching why they ended up here and why they can't seem to leave their barrel organ Esmeralda. At the Warm Winter Meadow, Fay the Fairy and Pinocchio try to make it snow. The music of the Efteling Musicians and Zang & Happy provides even more atmosphere.

Winter Efteling

Winter Efteling is the opening of the Efteling in the winter season, nowadays from November to February. The event has been brought since the first edition as a distinctly different experience than the Efteling offers during the rest of the year, with all kinds of extras in the form of decorations, special live entertainment and winter catering and attractions. The park also has different opening hours than during the high season.

The Winter Efteling has been organized since 1999. After three trial editions, it was decided in 2002 to put the event permanently on the calendar. Until 2010, the park was still closed between the summer season and the Winter Efteling, nowadays the Efteling is open every day of the year and there is therefore no interruption between summer and winter season.

Efteling visitors must show a covid heatlh pass from Friday 12 November at 4D cinema Fabula, horse show Raveleijn, the Efteling Museum and outdoor terraces at catering locations. From Monday 15 November - the start of the Winter Efteling - adigital covid certificate is also mandatory on the Warme Winter Weide. The municipality of Loon op Zand has decided this in response to statements by health minister Hugo de Jonge. Two days later, Efteling made the covid pass compulsory for the entire park. So only one check is needed, at the entrance. Inside the park there were no more rules in therms of facemasks. Physical distancing is still advised. The covid pandemic is not over yet.

De Efteling

The Efteling is a fantasy-themed amusement park in Kaatsheuvel in the Netherlands. The attractions are based on elements from ancient myths and legends, fairy tales, fables, and folklore.

Warme Winter Weide (Meadow) after sunset.

Lately all I want to do is just sleep. SLEEP. I love sleeping and somehow, with the winter coming and the darkness and cold settling in, I just feel like falling asleep for about 5 months so I'll be fresh and ready for spring to begin ;)

But sadly enough, it's not like that! Had to work today but they told me I couldn't come since there's NOTHING to do.. sigh. So now I'm in the studio, not really knowing what to do besides buying hairclips and drinking coffee :P

That sweater is AWESOME. And yes the branches are still hanging.. too lazy...

Apparently it's going to snow this week :s I HATE snow since it's such a hassle to get anywhere, but it sure does look pretty. Specially at work, will bring my camera with me next week when the Winterefteling starts, so many pretty lights will be there! :D And hopefully a tiny bit snow ;)

Winter Efteling 2020/2021

The Warme Winter Weide (Meadow) is the big novelty of the Winter Efteling 2020-2021. Due to the corona measures, the large tent on Speelweide had to make way this year for a field with campfires, snow-covered Christmas trees and stalls with food, drinks and souvenirs.

The Efteling winter season started 19/11/2020. Although the Warme Winter Meadow was born out of necessity - the old Ice Palace was not corona proof - the public is enthusiastic about the change. For the Warme Winter Meadow, Efteling has combined several existing elements. In the middle of the oval-shaped meadow there is a podium with two large campfires on either side. The field is surrounded by covered terraces, pine trees and wooden huts with winter delicacies.

We work with a fixed walking route and a separate entrance and exit. Room has been made for toilet trucks at the edge of the field. During busy periods, the Warme Winter Meadow can be temporarily closed to ensure that keeping a meter and a half distance remains possible.

Efteling miniatures are sold at one of the stalls. An Efteling Christmas village has also been built. [ Loopings 11/2020 ]

Tom Thumb stealing the Seven-league boots of the Ogre. Tom Thumb in the Efteling is based on one of the eight fairytales published by Charles Perrault "Le petit Poucet" in "Histoires ou contes du temps passé" in 1697. The scene, designed as "Klein Duimpje", is since 1998 in the Fairytale Forest. Tom Thumb is stealing the Seven-league boots of the sleeping ogre. To call Tom Thumb, you have to call his name in a hole of a wooden log.

Seven-league boots are an element in European folklore. The boots allow the person wearing them to take strides of seven leagues per step, resulting in great speed..

Cross-country track 't Hijgend Hert is the cross-country track that will be laid over the Kinderspoor course during the Winter Efteling. The course, consisting of a course of dozens of long 'sliding mats' and an issue point for skis and poles, was placed on the course of the Oude Tuffer during Winter Efteling 2002-2003, but was moved to the adjacent children's track a year later.

In the Winter Efteling edition 2009, the track was given several new signs with a winter version of the traveler, which can be found on the front of the attraction. In the subsequent edition, that of 2010, various images were placed between the trail through the images of travelers with cross-country skiing problems. The track has a length of 450 meters in length.

Gondoletta passing under the Stenen Brug in between Ruigrijk and Marerijk.

Gondoletta

Gondoletta is a Water ride in amusement park Efteling in the Netherlands. It was developed by Intamin (as a Tow boat ride); designed by Ton van de Ven and started operating in 1981.

Gondoletta is the attraction with the strongest connection to the roots of the Foundation Nature Park the Efteling. With the destruction of a large part of the Dutch economy during the Second World War the rampant unemployment of the time forced the government to institute New Deal –like employment programs.

In the case of Kaatsheuvel, the local employment agency formed a joint- venture with The Royal Dutch Moor Company' (or " Koninklijke Nederlandsche Heidemaatschappij" in Dutch); the part of the company involved with land reclamation and development still exists today under the name Arcadis.

The development of the nature park started in 1950 with the construction of a lake; connected to a decorative ponds with a channel, forests and recreation facilities.

For the construction of Gondoletta the channel had to be diverted to create a closed circuit; it no longer connects to the canoe -pond but curves back to the Decorative Pond.

The ride’s boarding platform uses a rotating disk, a system later implemented in Carnival Festival, Fata Morgana and Piraña.

The boats themselves were originally designed for Fata Morgana, the ride that opened in 1986 on another water location in the park.

The softly playing music in the boats is harp concert Allegro Brillante (11 minutes) from François-Adrien Boieldieu from his Concerto pour Harpe et Orchestre en ut majeur Op.82 (1801). The same music can be heard at the Little Mermaid.

Ride length: 20 minutes | 1081 meters

Speed: max 2.7 km/h

Ride capacity: 40 boats; 1100 passengers/ hour

Cost: € 2 million

Manufacturer: Intamin AG

Opened: 13/04/1981

Location: Reizenrijk

It is depicted with a castle on a hill, where visitors can climb up a staircase to look through windows through the bedroom where Doornroosje rests and the angry fairy sits on the spinning wheel. Spookslot 18/12/2017 15h52

"Do not feed the terrible snowman" says the sign on the water well in front of the haunted castle (Spookslot) in De Efteling.

Spookslot

The Haunted Castle (Dutch: Spookslot) is a haunted attraction in the Efteling in the Netherlands. It was designed by Ton van de Ven and was the first attraction built outside the Fairy Tale Forest.

On July 24, 1976 the announcement on the making of the world's biggest haunted castle appeared in Brabant's daily newspaper, Het Brabants Dagblad. The article mentions that the castle would be built between the Fairy Tale Forest and the rowing and canoeing pond. This was a strategic choice, because the location of the attraction would attract visitors to the normally ‘forgotten’ southern part of the park.

The main reason for this mega-attraction was declining numbers of visitors at Efteling. Aiming for a more general public, with an attraction that didn’t depend on the weather conditions, Efteling authorized their young designer Van de Ven to start designing the ride.

Van de Ven designed the castle as a walk-through attraction and, in the style of Anton Pieck, the castle was designed to look old and decayed. It is meant to look as though it was once beautiful and majestic, but is now haunted and in ruins and somewhat romantic.

The construction took about 18 months and the castle was officially opened May 10, 1978.

On May 12 a television special was broadcast with Kate Bush singing in and around the castle. She had a big hit around the globe with "Wuthering Heights" at the time.

The waiting hall is a dimly-lit area, with several spooky items, of which an oriental ghost with a crystal looking glass is the most notable. The glass uses the pepper's ghost technique to show a beautiful woman turning into a skull. In the tower area a hairy arm stretches from the roof, holding a big chandelier. Once in a while one might have a glimpse of three horrible batlike creatures, leering down at the visitors.

Upon entering the main attraction hall, a number of scary statues and scenes prepare the audience for the main course: a look into the inner court, graveyard, and the ruins of a monastery at night. When the clock strikes twelve, a violin (also a pepper's ghost effect) starts playing the Danse Macabre of Saint-Saëns and the graveyard comes to life and a number of skeletons and ghosts are visible. One tombstone is labeled in Latin "Puella Innocenta" (innocent girl). The years on her stone (in Roman numbering) reveal that she has been living backwards in time, however it is possible that it is merely a mistake of the artist who made the stone. There is also a tombstone inside the mansion with the name "Den Hegarty", an Irish rock singer who happened to be on the radio when the stone was made. Also, it is said that the main show's appearance was influenced by the 1971 horror film "Tombs of the Blind Dead".

The maintheme of the show is a shortened version of the Danse Macabre by Camille Saint-Saëns. The movements of the animatronics are synchronized with the music; the violin that opens and closes the main part of the show demonstrates this. The show itself has been adapted four times. During the opening season in 1978 the show lasted about 12 minutes. Three months later it was cut back to 8 minutes. In 1987 the show was renewed and in 1989 the final version was completed.
